I dreamt of him that night, a strange dream that made perfect sense. Too perfect. The mysterious gentleman's face was outlined in smoke, his perfect features only slighty distorted by the gray plum that became his handsome face. I tried to chase him, but every time my fingers found his lithe body, he evaporated, and appeared in front of me once more. I chased him all night through the city streets and when I finally captured him in my arms, he disappeared for good, never to return, leaving me with my agonized cry and the memory of his deep, soulful violet eyes. 1
I woke up at four, the nightmare shouldn't have even occured, let alone upset me as much as it did. The fact that it was the first day of school probably didn't help my nerves, but I would just have to deal with it.2
My heart pounded in my chest and there was a cold sweat that ensnared my body like ice. Was the guy from the restaurant really bothering me that much? I peeled of my shirt and threw it into the hamper, then decided to take a shower so I just undressed. I walked into my bathroom (my own bathroom had been a bribe from my parents because I was unhappy) and turned on the water and stepped into the scalding shower, not caring about the burning water on my skin or in my eyes. I scrubbed my skin and washed my hair,3
replaying the dream over and over again in my mind.4
I stepped out of the shower, took the towel off of the hook, and ran through my mahogany hair. I brushed my teeth and quickly dried myself off. The fact that I wore a uniform made dressing rather fast, so I got dressed by the time my alarm clock went off. I checked my email and read a few chapters by the time my dad shouted, "Time to go, son!" My family was so suburban it was ridiculus, with our perfectly manicured lawn and huge SUV, it couldn't get more upper middle class than us. I had told my mother goodbye and gotten my stuff, not taking my mind off of the dream for even a second. 5
It was a short drive, and yet my father had insisted on driving me my first day. We passed house after house, all of them looking exactly the same, with the same cars and the same lawns.6
And then I saw him. Standing in front of St. Mary's Private Catholic High School, looking better than all of the student body combined in his slacks, white button up shirt and tie. Stunned didn't even begin to cover what went through me at that moment. 7
