Don't Answer The Door - Ch. 5

Eva felt fear, for the first time that night. She contemplated whether or not she should look outside again. She did, she walked slowly towards the window. She looked down, and didn't see anything, or anyone. Had it all been just a hallucination? No, She is perfectly sane. She walked away from the window, and went for the door. She opened it and ran down the long flight of stairs. 1

The house was dark now. She didn't hear anything moving. Eva walked, her hands against the wall. She didn't know what she was looking for, or what she would find. She made her way to the front door, and stood outside on the front porch. She let out a sigh of relief when she saw Alex's car. The door was open, and she thought it was odd. Hesitantly, Eva walked towards the car, and as she got closer, she saw legs dangling out of the car. 2

"Oh no, oh no, oh no!" Eva screamed. 3

Suddenly, She heard someone cry out. 4

"Ouch!" Alex exclaimed as he sat straight up in his car. 5

Eva was shocked, she thought the worst happened, and she was so glad she was wrong. She still wasn't completely happy, she knew something was going on, and she wanted to know what it was. She stood in the same spot, in a way that it showed she was afraid of Alex. Alex got out of the car and walked towards Eva.6

"What's wrong? Why are you out here?" Alex said, his voice sounding a little worried.7

"What's wrong?!" Eva screamed at Alex. "How can you ask me such a thing?! What was that cop doing here?!" Eva said, demanding answers. 8

Alex didn't seem to have an answer for her, because he looked down, and kicked some sand. 9

"I... I...Can we just forget about this please, and go back inside?" Alex said, changing the tone of his voice.10

Eva almost agreed to it, but she mentally yelled at herself. She needed to know what is going on. She never liked being lied to, because it's happened a lot to her. 11

"I'm sorry Alex, but I need to know, what's going on?" She said, tears forming in her eyes, afraid that Alex might get angry with her questions.12

"Okay. Okay, I'll tell you. Can we talk about this inside though?" Alex asked asked Eva, looking deep into her eyes.13

Eva stared into his eyes, which for a changed seemed warm and caring. She agreed to talk about it inside, and they headed back into the bedroom that Eva was in in the first place. They sat down on the bed and didn't say a word for which seemed like eternity. Alex coughed, which startled Eva. 14

"How do you know that police officer? And why was he here? Why did he stop us on the freeway that way, and just leave without more questions? What was that he was stuffing into his trunk?" Eva asked, the questions just rolling off her tongue.15

"Whoa, hold on there Eva. You need to seriously calm down. Nothing is going on, nothing out of the ordinary." Alex said, defending himself.16

Alex looked down at Eva's hands, and noticed the fresh scars on her wrist. He was glad he had a reason to change the subject, but he was genuinely worried about Eva. He places her hands in his, and examined the scars.17

"Why Eva, why did you do this to yourself?" Alex asked her, his voice sounded a little weak.18

Eva was caught off guard with that question. Her body went numb and she seemed less tense than she was earlier. 19

"Did your father have anything to do with this?!" Alex said, getting angry.20

Eva stared at Alex, and she was happy that he cared about her. She nodded yes to his question. Alex dropped her hands out of his and stood up, walking to the window. Eva noticed as Alex clenched his fists. 21

"Alex, what's wrong? It's okay, really. I'm used to this. It's been going on for a long time." It hit Eva that this was the first fact about herself that she shared with Alex. She was upset that it was such a gloomy topic. 22

"It's not okay Eva. Your father needs to be taught a lesson. He will pay for all of your heart ache." He said, staring out at the dark sky, with it's silver moon.23

Eva became worried. She was upset with her father, but she was a forgiving person. She wanted to call him that second and tell him that she was okay, that she forgives him. But Alex kept on saying what an awful person her father is, and she started to believe it again. Eva realized that Alex avoided her previous questions.24

"Alex, answer me now, who was the police officer?" Her voice came out quiet, like she was a scared little girl.25

She heard Alex sigh, and she sighed on the inside. Alex walked back to the bed, and sat closely next to Eva.26

"That police officer is a friend of mine. I heard your father yelling at you before I knocked on your door. I was worried about you, and I know how it is to have a father who always yells and abuses his children. I went through the same thing, but I took care of that Eva. I took care of it, and now look at me. I'm as happy as ever. I want you to be as happy, and the only way for that to happen is for your father to be out of the picture."27

Eva gasped. "Out Of The Picture?! What the hell do you mean, Alex, What are you planning?! Don't do anything stupid!" She screamed, the worry revealed in her eyes.28

"I wont do anything Eva, I wont do my dirty work. I told you, I got my connections with my friend. My friend." Alex said grinning.29

Eva slapped Alex. She screamed at him and started pounding on his chest. Eva didn't want her father to die, she was going to be alone. Not her father too, she didn't want that. 30

"Please no, Alex please don't do anything. I.. I wont have anyone!" She cried out, her tears falling quickly from her dark eyes. 31

"Don't worry Eva. You will have me. I'm all that you need." Alex said, as he wrapped his arms around her, hiding the smile on his face.32
