Paid In Full - Part 8 (Dark-Hunter Inspired)

Watching as Aiden made her way from one end of the living room to the other and back, Fury rolled his eyes in aggravation. 1

“Yeah, look, eagle,” he said. “Much as I like seeing you annoyed, you’re going to wear a hole through your floor with this pacing, and I’ll probably end up tripping on it, breaking a paw or something, and then end up pissed at you. So why don’t we cut that part out and you can tell me what’s the problem this time.”2

“Shut the hell up.”3

“Or,” he said, not missing a beat, “you could tell me to shut the hell up, and you can go on whining.”4

“I’m not whining.”5

“Pouting, then.” He leaned back on the couch. “What’d the ‘big bad’ do this time?”6

“Pulled a completely typical god attitude.”7

Glad that she wasn’t going to deny what was annoying her, Fury leaned forward slightly. “Now we’re getting somewhere. Fill me in, or I’ll just make up details.”8

Stopping her pacing, Aiden glared. “Didn’t you have some gossip or something?”9

“Wha-?”10

“The other day when you popped in, and were almost tromped on by Miss Bright and Shiny goddess bitch,” Aiden reminded him. “So, what’s the gossip you have?”11

“Had,” he corrected her. “The subject is… how shall I put it…”12

“Dead?”13

“Extremely.” Giving her an innocent look, he smiled slightly. “And stop changing the subject. What did your dearest do this time?”14

“I’m not discussing my relationship with you.”15

“Since when?”16

“Because it’ll piss me off,” Aiden clarified. “All this alpha-male tripe gives me a headache.”17

Fury was silent for a minute as he stared at her. Relationship advice was not something he knew, or even cared about. But, it was something he figured she needed at this moment. “You like being treated like dirt?” 18

From the look on her face, he figured that maybe he should just keep his mouth shut. “You best explain that, wolfie.”19

Sighing, and knowing that he really should just get up, bid her a fond adieu, and leave, he found himself actually answering her. “It’s just…you’re pretty good for an Arcadian, and all that… and you deserve to be treated with respect. I know I’m not privy to the inner workings of your relationship… thank gods…but I do know that there are times when he thoroughly pisses you off. I can sense it, and smell it in the air. 20

“Grant it, the guy could serve me my ass on a platter, complete with side salad and dessert, but that doesn’t give him the right to treat people like dirt.” Fury sighed. “I dunno. Maybe it’s my animal sense that’s just not getting it.”21

“It’s hard for some immortals,” Aiden said, not knowing why she was even trying to defend him. “If he says the wrong thing to change something, then the world gets that much harder.”22

“So he treats you like crap just so you’ll do what he can’t?”23

“Basically.” 24

“Humans are complicated.”25

“I’m not technically human.”26

“Close enough,” Fury pointed out. “Why do you put up with it?”27

Aiden sighed. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “It’s like… deep down, I know why he’s doing it, but I can’t vocalize why.” 28

“And you’re all right with it?”29

“In theory.”30

Standing, Fury stretched lightly. “You’re not a dog, Aiden. Don’t let anyone treat you that way.”  He gave her a knowing looks. “Trust me, a dog’s life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.” 31

Waiting for Roan to show back up was starting to get on Tria’s nerves. Actually, the eagle that seemed intent to loiter in her general vicinity was topping the ‘nerve list’, but Roan’s absence was in a very close second. 34

“She takes off a lot,” Paul said from across the room as if he’d read her thoughts. “Don’t worry… she returns us to the point where she plucked us from. Usually.”35

“Not helping,” Tria said. 36

“Not trying to,” Paul replied evilly. “Besides, since you obviously live here now, looks like you’re stuck regardless.” He smirked as flames danced at the ends of her fingers. “You really should learn to put that anger under wraps. Not going to do anyone any good if you’re off firing at anyone who even looks at you wrong.”37

Knowing he was right, but not willing to give him the satisfaction, Tria continued to stare at him, then turned with an annoyed sigh as she doused the flames. Roan! Tria thought, please hurry or I’m going to have roasted eagle for dinner. 38

Take it easy, Tria. Paul’s just seeing what buttons he can push to piss you off. Don’t give him the satisfaction. I’ll be back in a few hours.39

Sighing again as Roan vanished from her mind, Tria inhaled deeply, exhaled, then turned with a fake smile. “What do you do when you’re not hunting the elusive Labeve?”40

Paul shrugged. “Little this, little that.”41

“Well, that clears that up.”42

“I’m in charge of some big assed company that makes oodles of money for me to spend on hookers and fast cars.”43

Tria could hear the sarcasm in his voice, and sighed. “Should think about buying a personality.”44

“Too expensive, really,” he replied. “And what do you do now that you’re no longer a Dark-Hunter?”45

Tria froze at the way he said that. “’Scuse me?”46

Paul sniffed lightly. “Ain’t no smell like one of Artemis’ pets. But, since you’re out and about in the daylight, I’d say you’re an ex-pet.”
47

“One would think a Were would be more careful with the term ‘pet’.”48

“Oooo,” he breathed in appreciation at her comeback. He sighed as if considering something. “Can I ask a question?”49

“Depends.”50

“My brothers,” he began, then paused and looked at the floor. “Was their death easy?”51

Tria was about to stretch the truth a bit to tell her they went quickly, until he looked back up and she saw the hopeful bloodlust in his eyes. “It was… rather gruesome,” she admitted, figuring he’d be able to sense a lie anyway. 52

“Good.” Giving a lopsided smile at the look she gave him, he shrugged. “Liam and Zane were two sadistic bastards who wouldn’t have hesitated to kill anyone, me included, for any reason. They were brutal, even by Arcadian standards. There’s no real loss by their demise.”53

“How family oriented,” Tria remarked dryly. Her own brother’s actions had lead to her and her family’s death, but there was no way she’d ever hate him enough to enjoy his death. “Bet your reunions were a blast.”54

“Uh, yeah,” he replied slowly. “They were entertaining, to say the least. And on that, I’d prefer you keeping your nosey ass out of my business. We make be working for a common goal here, but that’s as far as it goes.”55

Tria watched as he walked away, knowing that she’d hit a raw nerve with that subject. Filing it away in case she needed to piss him off again in the future, she strolled to the computer she used and started making a graph chart of Labeve’s known actions. 56

“Nosey bitch,” Paul muttered as he walked across the room. Grabbing a computer notebook, he opened it, intent on doing some of his own research. Logging on to the internet, he stared at the screen for a few moments before closing the top. 57

Although most things rarely bothered him, his family was one topic that managed to get through that shield. Growing up, he wished that he’d had an upbringing like those around him. Hell, even Aiden had a better upbringing than he did, and she was cursed by the damn fates at birth. At least her brothers had been decent eagles who rarely had a bad word to say about anyone. Then again, most of her brothers were dead, while he was alive, so there was something to be said for being a mean bird. 58

Sighing in boredom and annoyance, he stood and headed for the door so he could stretch his wings over Roan’s vast estate.59

~~~~~~~~~~~~61
The water was sparkling, the sun shining, and the breezes warm enough to make one never want to leave. Looking around the beach, Ash’s gaze first went to the water, and not seeing the surfer there, he scanned the sand. There, on the other side of the trees, Savitar sat in a lounge chair, a tall drink in his hand, and a vacant look on his face.62
Had Ash not just gotten off the phone with Aiden, he probably wouldn’t have been here, or even known what was annoying the immortal. As it was, he’d picked up on the annoyance in Aiden’s voice, and after some casual questions that, to his surprise, she answered, he decided a visit was in order.63
Deciding to walk over instead of just appearing, Ash made his way across the sand. Stopping when he got to the chair, he stared down through dark sunglasses.64
“You’re blocking the sun,” Savitar told him as he took a drink from the glass in his hand. “Going to ruin my tan.”65
Snorting in amusement, Ash created another chair and sat in it. Savitar was already fairly naturally tanned, with a rich shade that could pass him off as Arabian, Spanish, or even Italian. “No surfing today?”66
“Waves aren’t cooperating.” From his tone, he sounded like he was in a sullen mood. “What’s on your mind?” 67
“Why are you pushing Aiden away?”68
”Not my fault if she can’t handle it.”
69
Raising an eyebrow, Ash stared at him, keeping the look until Savitar rolled his eyes in annoyance and turned away. “You’re doing things on purpose to make her leave.”70
“Not to be rude here, Ash, but…hell, no, yeah, I do mean to be rude here,” Savitar said, turning back. “You’re the last being that should lecture me about pushing people away.”71
“You’re hurting her.”72
“She’s strong, she’ll adapt.”73
“And if she doesn’t?” Ash asked. “Are you willing to sacrifice her for your own good?”74
“You have to ask?”75
“Apparently so,” Ash sighed. “Just when I think that maybe you’ve stopped being an ass, you prove it all over again.”76
“Then what’s your problem?” Savitar replied calmly. “After all these years, you should know by know that I have no redeeming qualities.”77
“Why do I even bother?” Ash asked himself.78
“I’m wondering the same thing.” 79
Closing his eyes in annoyance, Ash leaned back. “All right.” Opening his eyes, he held a hand up to forestall any further arguments. “I’m going to tell you what I think, even though you’ve probably already read my mind, then I’m going to go.” 80
“Up to you.”81
“Contrary to, and despite of what you believe, you do have some redeeming qualities; even if you don’t want to admit them. You care for Aiden, you’re wonderful to Simi and you took Nick in when I couldn’t bring myself to deal with him. You stepped up and corralled the Were’s when all they wanted to do was kill each other. You’ve also been a friend of Takeshi’s for a long time… And you helped me long ago when no one else gave a damn if I stumbled and fell.” 82
“What’s your point,” Savitar said, harsher than he intended. 83
“The point is, although you’re a selfish, most likely psychotic surfer, you do care about things. And that’s what makes you feel bad about hurting Aiden.” 84
~~~~~~~~~~~~86

Although it had been three days since he’d gotten completely drunk, Dom was still having a difficult time shaking the lethargic feeling away. Making a personal vow to never drink that much again, he basically sequestered himself in the room Angie had chosen for the baby’s room so he could paint it. 87

Having already moved his office things to a room further down the hall, he was finishing up the remaining wall before moving the crib and other furniture in. Looking up as a knock sounded at the door, he motioned Craig in with a wave of his head. 88

“Phone,” Craig said, handing a cordless handset to him. 89

“Is it life or death?” Dom asked, not taking it. 90

“It’s Aiden.” 91

“The eagle?” Reaching out for the phone, Dom brought it to his ear. “Yeah?” He listened for a few moments. “Now’s fine.” Handing the phone back to Craig, he picked the brush up again. “Go away, dude.”92

“You know,” Craig sighed. “You were far less bitchy when you were dead.” 93

“Craig,” Dom said, his voice a warning.94

“I know, I know. Shut up or you’ll fire me.” Shaking his head, Craig took a step back. 95

“You don’t even work for me anymore,” Dom said. “So how can I fire you?” 96

“Good point.” He took a step back as a small flash appeared in the corner and Aiden looked at him. “And, there’s my cue.” 97

Watching as he left, Dom hide his smile at his old friend’s antics, then glanced at Aiden as he continued to paint. “Long time no see. What do you want?”98

“Fine,” she replied. “And yourself?”99

“Tired, annoyed and assuming the worst at the moment.” 100

“Then I should just come out and say it.” 101

“An immortal that doesn’t beat around the bush,” Dom said. “That’s unusual.”102

“I’m not immortal.”103

“That would explain the lack of desire on my part to shove your ass through a wall then.”104

Staring in slightly amused shock, Aiden raised an eyebrow. “What did immortals do to you to make you so jaded?”105

“Do you want it alphabetical, chronological, or just cut to the point of why you’re here?” 106

Although he seemed calm enough as he painted with his back to her, she could sense the anxiety rolling off him at her question. Apparently he’d been screwed around quite a bit by immortals over the past thousand years, and wasn’t looking forward to it ever happening again. 107

That made it a little harder to tell him what she had come for. She wasn’t even sure why she was here. All she knew was that she had information that could save a life, and she could never forgive herself if she didn’t at least try to do something. “Roan wants to use Angie to stop Labeve,” Aiden told him. 108

“I’d rather drown myself in BBQ sauce and stand in front of Simi than help someone who wants my unborn child dead.” 109

“She thinks it’s the only way to stop this demon from killing others,” Aiden said, ignoring his rather vehement refusal. 110

“Don’t care,” Dom replied as he ran the brush up the wall again. 111

“Don’t blame you.” She sighed, then decided to give him the rest of the information she held. “Savitar forbid her from using Angie, but he knows that Roan will do it anyway because he told her no.”112

“Why are you telling me this?” he asked, the paintbrush going over the same spot he’d just covered. 113

“I wanted to warn you. There are things in play here that can drag even the heartiest of souls down, and lose them in the ensuing shuffle.” She sighed. “You’re pretty decent for a human, and I owe you for letting me stay in your house, and for protecting those around you.” 114

“That was part of my job,” he said, not wanting the accolades she was giving. “And you paid that debt in full when you traded for my safety.”115

“Who told you,” she said with a sigh. “Wait, lemme guess. Savitar.”116

“Doesn’t matter who told me,” he said, not knowing why he was even bothering to protect the god. “You owe me nothing. You sure you’re not here for another reason?” 117

“You beings with precognition really suck, you know?” she groused. 118

“Not precognition this time,” he said. “Just a long time in observing basic behavior of those around me.” He sighed, getting back to the point of her visit. “There is no way in the universe that I would ever consider doing anything to lose my family again. Nothing.” He looked at her. “I’d kill to keep them safe.”119

“Then kill Labeve.”120

That caught his attention enough to make him step back from the wall. “What?”
121

Not sure where that suggestion had come from, she quickly ran the thought through her mind. “You almost kicked her ass last time.”122

“I was immortal before,” he pointed out. “And I happened to die because of that demon.” 123

Sighing, Aiden held up her hands in defeat. “I understand. I had to try though. I thought that I’d come here, and warn you what Roan had planned, but I just realized that there’s more to it.”124

“Which would be?” 125

Aiden shrugged as she scanned the conversation again. Since she had perfect recall, every tone, facial feature and emotion was logged in with the conversation. She’d been too pissed off before to think it through logically, but now that it was verbalized, it seemed rather obvious. She guessed that was what Fury had been hinting at earlier. “Why would a goddess want to use Angie unless there was a good chance that it would work?” she mused. “And why would a god threaten her not to use Angie, while knowing that she’ll go against his wishes?”126

“Sounds like typical god behavior,” Dom pointed out. 127

“Typical…” Trailing off, Aiden stared at the floor in front of her. True, Savitar had been typical in his single-minded thinking, a fact that she had spent the past few days bitching about, but there had been more. She was sure of that now. A year ago, she wouldn’t have noticed, but nowadays she was rather used to his not so subtle ways. 128

Dom sighed. He was well acquainted with the ways of gods, and could read the realization on Aiden’s face. “Not fun being used, is it.” 129

“I don’t know why I’m even surprised, really.” She took a step back. “I’m sorry to pull you in to this…again. I’m going to go.”130

“Wait,” Dom said, finally putting the paintbrush down. “I’ve been jerked around by immortals for a little longer than you have, so I’m going to give you a little advice.”131

“How gracious,” she deadpanned. 132

“It is, isn’t it?” he agreed. “One thing you have to realize about some immortals… they can’t break out of their natural inclinations at times. It may be so ingrained in him that it’s all he knows, and can’t quite discover any other way to get things done.” 133

“Doesn’t change the fact that he used me, again.”134

“It’s in his nature to do that,” Dom said. “You can’t fault someone for following their nature. Just as it’s your nature to try to warn me. He counted on you to be true to yourself, and that’s all that’s making me listen. Had Savitar told you what he wanted you to do, and you came to me, I would have asked you to leave, and told Roan to shove it when she showed up. It would probably still go ahead without my knowledge and that would be a huge mistake on my part.135

“As it stands, I’m nearly convinced that this is the only way to save Angie and the baby. I may not like it, and it may kill me, literally, but at least it’s my choice. And that’s my nature.”136

“So, I should just accept being played?”137

”Didn’t say that,” Dom replied with an evil smile. “Make him pay, the best you can without evoking wrath. Make that part of your nature.”
138

~~~~~~~~~~~~140
The conversation with Savitar was just one more thing on his mind, prompting Ash to take a walk just to think. Passing by store windows, he glanced in a few, book marking some locations for future ‘Simi Shopping Sprees’, and continued on through the busy city streets. 141
Making his way to the park that surrounded a small fountain, he sat on a bench and stared at the water flowing. Although he knew a lot of things, there were some places where he was completely lost. Giving relationship advice was one of those places. The need was there for him to help Savitar and Aiden, but any advice from him might do more harm than good. All he could really do was listen and possibly give some neutral suggestions. 142
Thinking of relationship failures, he sighed, and contacted Roan, requesting that she release Tria for a while to talk. One moment he was alone, and the next a surprised looking Tria was beside him.143
“Good thing I wasn’t on the can,” she muttered.144
Laughing despite himself, Ash shook his head. “You wanted to talk?”145
Catching the distance between them, Tria studied him. “How long has it been since we last saw each other?”146
“How long has it been for you?” he asked carefully.147
“About a week. But I know that’s not right.” Closing her eyes when he didn’t answer, she felt herself getting annoyed. “Ash, please.”148
“Little over ten months.”149
Giving a small laugh, Tria sighed. “So I guess life goes on while I’m literally stuck in some frigging loop where demons kill and avians annoy.”150
One well-manicured eyebrow rose over the top of his glasses. “Who does what?”151
“The eagles that attacked us last week… uh, last year, maybe?” Tria said. “Their brother is a co-worker… sort of.”152
“Paul,” Ash said with a nod. 153
She stared slowly, wondering why she was even shocked that he knew. “You knew?” 154
“Paul’s not bad,” Ash said, avoiding her question. “He’s just sort of really messed up in certain areas of his life.” 155
“Charming.”156
“You two could probably help each other,” he said, then blinked, glad the sunglasses hid the surprise in his eyes. Great, the Oracle in him sure picked the odd times to come out. 157
“What?” Tria gave him a look he could imagine her giving someone that was kicking a puppy. “He’s an obnoxious twit.” 158
“Anyway,” Ash said, wanting to get far from that subject. “How goes the hunt?”159
“I’m learning lots of interesting things,” she said, willing to let it go. “Like, some demons are sick, Dom’s going to be a dad, some gods like to play games-“160
“Whoa, wait,” Ash interrupted. “How would you know Angie’s pregnant?”161
“Roan mentioned it,” Tria said vaguely. 162
Seeing exactly what was going to happen, Ash held the grimace from his face. This had the potential to be extremely bad, and after seeing Aiden’s part in it, he knew exactly what Savitar had done, and why the eagle was pissed off. 163
“Yeah,” he said, sounding casual. “She’s about four months along.”164
“Well, congrats to them then,” Tria said. “It’s nice to see someone actually living the happily ever after that they were promised.” 165
Sensing the irony in her voice, Ash gave a brief smile. It was still too soon for her to come to grips with their ended relationship, and what the future held in store for her. Feeling rather bogged down by the events of the day, Ash stood slowly as the sun started to set. 166
“Time for me to get to work,” he said. “Are you going to be all right?” 167
“I’ll be fine,” Tria said. “I’m just not used to sitting around doing nothing.” She smiled. “Hey, any chances of letting me slay a few Daimons… you know... for old times sake?”168
Knowing that she probably needed this, Ash motioned her forward with his hand. “It would be my honor to have you accompany me to a killing or two.”169
Waiting while she turned, he shrugged the long jacket off his shoulder briefly. Simi. Shadow form until I leave. I need you to go to Aiden and make sure she’s all right. But don’t interfere unless it’s necessary.170
Tria turned back to look at him, just missing the shadow that detached from his body and moved behind him. Simi watched as they walked away, then materialized into her pert human form. Getting her bearings, she vanished, heading off to do her akri’s bidding.171
~~~~~~~~~~~~172

~~~~~~~~~~~~173
Still pissed off from her earlier realization, Aiden decided that a late night walk was needed. Normally, she kept close to home, or in the skies at night since she knew just what the dark held. Tonight though, she welcomed the cobblestone road under her feet, and the possibility of running in to something that she could annihilate. 174
Taking her MP3 player out of a jacket pocket, she put the small earphones in her ears, flicked through to the hardest rock list she had, and started playing. Fittingly, Time and Time Again by Papa Roach screamed at her, setting her annoyance at Savitar up another notch. 175
“I’m not your damned minion,” she whispered to herself, “and I’m not just a body for you to screw.” Flicking through the playlist as she mumbled to herself, Aiden stopped at a sensation she hadn’t felt in a while. Taking the small head phones out of her ears during Garou’s Stand Up, she turned slowly. “Daimons.”176
“Well, well, well,” the tall blonde in the front said. “Imagine running in to a Were-Hunter in this quaint little town.” He looked at the other three with him. “And you didn’t want to take this route.”177
“My mistake,” came the reply. 178
Knowing she should take this moment to vanish, Aiden calmly put her MP3 player in to her pocket and took a step back. The thought of summoning Savitar’s protection mark crossed her mind, but she pushed it away. 179
“You want me,” she said. “Then come get me.”180
That stopped the advancing Daimons. Looking around for a trap, they started towards her again, slower than before. Head low, Aiden waited until they got about seven feet from her, then acted. 181
Using her natural enhanced abilities and magick, she manifested a knife in each hand as she suddenly ran at them, vaulting in a summersault over their heads. Landing, she spun at the same moment they did, and swung out. One knife landed in its intended target, while the other was swept to the side as the Daimon punched out.182
Stumbling back, the punch was followed quickly by a head butt that ended up with fangs scraping across her shoulder. Not bothering to stop, Aiden shifted direction, flinging out a knife before another Daimon could move. Down to two opponents, Aiden inhaled and regarded them with a coldness she knew was born from the fires of hate. 183
Everything bad that had happened in her life was the direct result of Daimons, and although they shared a genetic link, she felt no familial bond. Her deceased mate tried to kill her for Stryker… who then hunted her before giving up for some unknown reason. That still bothered her, since she never knew when his apparent truce would be broken.184
She highly doubted that killing off four of his Daimons might be one of those ways, but hell… one never knew what would pique the ire of a demigod. Based on that, she decided that killing the two in front of her would probably be the best way to keep both her location a secret, and keep her out of Stryker’s current curosity.185
Tensing as the remaining Daimons split up to take her on from both sides, she created two new knives and then waited. “Will you two hurry,” she said. “Unless your plan is to bore me to death with this prolonged attack.”186
Jumping at her, the two latched on as one aimed for her neck and the other for her arms to remove the knives. Shifting her body, Aiden managed to avoid having her throat ripped out. The fangs ended up sinking in to her shoulder, bringing a yell from her at the same time the knives were removed from her hands. 187
A hard punch to the ribs cut the scream short as her breath left. The second Daimon took that moment to bite in to her other shoulder. Momentarily stunned from the two bites, Aiden blinked in confusion as the vampires did their work. Her mind finally caught up with her, prompting a surge in her magick that flung both Daimons away from her. 188
Bleeding from both shoulders, and wincing with pain at each breath, she fell to her knees. Hoping she looked vulnerable, she waited as they approached again. Smiling evilly, Aiden waited until they were close enough before flinging her hands out, nailing both in the chest with knives that manifested in the air. 189
With both dead, she slowly got to her feet, pulled her MP3 out of her pocket and slowly inserted the buds in her ears. Moaning at the pain her body was giving her, she turned and walked away, vanishing in mid stride. 190
Appearing back in her living room, she paused at a figure that was sitting on her couch and slowly removed the ear buds again. Turning from the movie that was playing on the wall screen, Simi plopped a handful of popcorn in to her mouth and chewed as she regarded Aiden curiously. 191
“Aiden feels better?” she asked.192
“Sort of.” 193
“Goods.” Simi stood from the couch. “The Simi understands the needs for hurting things, but she would appreciates you not doing something like that again.” 194
    Fury is so smart sometimes that it's surprising.
    “Going to ruin my tan.” Too funny. Okay... I repeat the bit about Savitar being a jerk. What's up with that? Huh?
    “You were far less bitchy when you were dead.” Now THAT'S funny!Oooohhh.. now what did the gods do to Dom to make him distrust them so? This the Eros/Psyche thing mixe with the Artemis deal? Or is there more?
    Paul and Tria helping each other? Interesting.
    Ahhhh! Daimon fight scene! I love those! I thought she was going to get her butt kicked, but she was playing them all along. Smart chick, uh, eagle. Simi at the end added that little touch that you always manage to deliver.
