The Love Story - Chapter Five

~Chapter Five~1

“See ya later!” Cliff yelled. I waved, and forced a smile. To tell the truth, I just wanted to get home and watch a good horror movie. I was so tired, confused and stressed from a whole day at school, that I couldn’t be bothered doing anything else.2

“Hey Mel?” Cliff yelled, from his front lawn. I turned around. “Today, like the whole time we have been walking home, you have been so quiet. Are you sure you’re okay?”3

“Umm...not really Cliff.” I answered, feeling a knot in my stomach. He signalled for me to come over to him. I slowly walked there. 4

“Come inside Mel, my parents aren’t home and we can talk.” He offered, putting his arm around my waist and leading me to his front door. I smiled and nodded.5

“So Mel.” Cliff said as he placed a cold glass of apple juice in front of me. He sat down on the couch next to me and looked at me, expectantly. 6

“I don’t know what to do Cliff. I thought I was over James and then he gave me this necklace…” I signalled to the beautiful necklace hanging around my neck. “And then the next day he goes out with Katie, and I don’t know I think I still have feelings for him.”7

“I don’t know what to say,” Cliff answered. “I had no idea about the necklace or your feelings.” I nodded. “Well you know Mel, I am always here for you, I love you like heaps!” 8

“Thanks honey. It means a lot to me, I trust you heaps and I always look forward to seeing you.” I said truthfully, looking at his quite attractive face.9

“You can do better than James. He cheated on you. No one should ever cheat on anyone, especially not you. You are such an awesome person, and pretty as hell. He’s stupid.” Cliff smiled at me, and took my hand.10

“I don’t know what to say, you are the best person I think I’ve ever met.” I replied honestly. Suddenly he leaned in closer to me, and our lips met. The hair stood up on my arms, and I got really nervous. The kiss seemed to last such a long time, and when he leant back, his expression looked just as shocked as I felt. His hand was still on mine, and that was all I aware of as I stared at him, in disbelief. I could not believe that just happened. 11

“Uh…I didn’t mean to do that…I’m sorry…” Cliff stuttered, going bright red. I suddenly, I don’t know why, But I leant in and kissed him again. It was like an undeniable urge that I couldn’t stop. This time, he placed his hand on my face, and kissed me back. When it was over, I stood up almost immediately.12

“I...I better go.” I stated, turning to face his door. He stood up and walked me to the door, opening it slowly. 13

“Umm…I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?” He asked. I nodded.14

“Bye Cliff.” I turned, and almost ran down his driveway and the rest of the way home. What was going on with me? If I loved James, why did that kiss make me feel that way? Why did I kiss him again? What am I doing? Have I gone insane!? 15

“Mel! Where have you been?!" My mum yelled. I ignored her and ran straight to my room, where I have been spending a lot of my time lately. I checked my mobile phone. I had two messages…I opened the first one. It read:16

‘Hey Mel, I don’t know what went on at my house today, but I want you to know, I have loved you ever since I first saw you. I understand that you love James and above all I want to stay friends or ‘brother and sister’. But I am sorry if I took things too far today. All my love, Cliff.’17

I smiled, I don’t even know why. For some reason, it felt good to read that message, to know Cliff cared about me, and always had. Maybe being with him would truly make me happy. I opened the second message and it read:18

‘Mel. I know you think I am a loser and don’t care. I care more than you know. I will break up with Katie for you. You know I would. Love you sexy girl. James.’19

I furiously pressed reply and typed ‘James. Don’t ever call or message me again. Don’t talk to me. I don’t want anything to do with you. Mel.’ And the amazing feeling of accomplishment when I saw it had sent, was overwhelming. I was not going to be James’ toy anymore. Goodbye to my past!20
