The Softest Winds Are the Coldest

-Prologue-1

As she looked death in the face, she was calm. She saw it creeping closer, and rather than fear, relief was the emotion that graced her face.
'No need for fear now', she thought to herself, and she accepted death as it brushed her cheek.
No regrets. Nothing left to fear. Nothing in the future. Just death.2

-The Story-

Colby Jones was a fairly average person. She had brown hair that barely brushed her shoulders, and light green eyes. She was of small stature, and a simple mind. No one knew that something so extraordinary could happen to someone so plain.3

Colby woke that morning just as she had every other. She sat up, stretched and yawned. She stood, went to the window and looked out at the street below. The sky was gray, as always. She dressed and ate a quick breakfast. She brushed her teeth, grabbed her bag for school and rushed out the door.4

Little did she know, today was going to be different.5

As Colby stood at the bus stop, waiting, she saw a sudden brightness. She looked up and, as shock unfolded over her features, she looked at the golden sun shining down on her. There were wispy clouds surrounding it, but that was all. This sudden outburst of sunshine made her forget about the bus, and she almost didn't notice when it did come.6

With a start, she clamored on, and quickly took her seat next to her best friend, Shelly McIntyre. Shelly had dirty blonde hair which she kept in a tight french braid. She had baby blue eyes, and a terrific figure that the guys at school were always chasing after. Behind Shelly sat Aaron Sempter, the guy Colby had known since she was a baby. He had black hair, short and spiky, with piercing blue eyes. He was about a half foot taller than both girls, which he teased them about constantly.7

"Wow, the sun's out!" Colby said to them, pointing out the blatantly obvious.8

Shelly and Aaron rolled their eyes at each other. They knew not to comment back, because they knew they'd say something sarcastic that would go right over Colby's head.9

"What's the plan for today, then?" Aaron inquired.10

"Is today something special?" asked Colby obliviously.11

This time, Aaron couldn't help but burst out laughing.12

"Today's your birthday, Colby. Remember, you're turning 17?" Shelly said, as Aaron tried to control his laughter.13

Colby blushed as she thought of what day it was. How could she have forgotten her own birthday?14

"Oh. Yeah." she answered quietly, feeling thoroughly idiotic.15

"What's the plan, then?" asked Shelly.16

The three of them sat in silence as they thought. As the bus began to pull up to their school, James Edwards High School, Aaron tapped Shelly on the shoulder and whispered something in her ear. She smiled and nodded. Colby looked back and forth between them, confused.17

"What is it?"18

The two looked at each other mischievously.19

"We're not telling you." said Aaron, "it's a surprise. You'll have to wait and find out."20

They stood and got off the bus. Colby pouted and whined all the way to their first class, Geometry, but to no avail. This continued for the rest of the school day, but her two best friends refused to tell her. Finally, Colby saw the last seconds of the school day tick by and shot out of her seat. As she went to her locker, where they would usually all meet up after school, she found a note attached to it.21

It read:
'There are few truths in this world. What I feel for you is one of them. Meet me in the courtyard in twenty minutes.'
Colby sighed. More waiting. 'Oh well,' she thought, 'I can bear it.'22

After twenty minutes, Colby made her way to the school courtyard.23

As she reached the courtyard, she saw a blanket laid out in the grass, with some food on top. It wasn't fancy, but it was sweet. Aaron was sitting there, smiling up at her. He gestured for her to sit beside him. She skipped to his side and sat.24

"Where's Shelly?" she asked.25

A look of annoyance flashed over Aaron's face, soon replaced by a calm one.26

"She decided to cancel. She had something else to do." It was an obvious lie. Colby didn't notice.27

"Oh," she said sadly, "okay."28

"But it's okay. I'm here!" Aaron smiled at her, a little too keenly.29

"Thanks Aaron. What's to eat?"30

As they ate, they chatted about their lives. Eventually, conversation stopped and they sat in silence.31

"I wonder who wrote that note." Colby thought aloud.32

"What note?"33

"Oh, there was a note attached to my locker," Colby said as she pulled it out of her pocket. "Here." and she handed it to him.34

Aaron read it and laughed.35

"I wrote this, Colby."36

Colby looked confused.37

"You did?" he nodded, and she asked, "why?"38

Aaron rolled his eyes and said, almost angrily, "I love you, Colby. I love you. I know you feel it too."39

"Well, sure I love you, you're my oldest friend, Aaron." Colby said cheerfully, obviously not getting it.40

"I mean as more than a friend, Colby."41

Colby was quiet for a moment, and then said "Ohhh, I get it Aaron. Nice joke." she chuckled.

And she continued to laugh. It was the most absurd idea on the planet. Apparently laughter was the wrong answer.42

"Why are you laughing?" Aaron asked manically, "what's so funny?"43

But she couldn't stop laughing. Aaron saw red.

"I'll teach you to laugh." he muttered.44

Colby felt the whack to her head, and saw nothing.45

Blackout.46

Her sight was blurry as she opened her eyes. She blinked a few times as she struggled to figure out where she was and why.47

Colby saw a lump figure on the floor. She twisted herself to see what it was, but found herself unable to move. Her arms were tightly chained to the wall behind her, as were her feet. There was tape bound around her mouth, so she couldn't speak.48

As she looked around, she gathered that she was in a basement somewhere. There were boxes all around, things that had been stored away. The box closest to her was marked, 'X-MAS Decorations'. It was then that she noticed that the thing on the floor was bleeding. She struggled to free herself and make any kind of noise. It was no use.49

Colby's heart was pounding out of her chest. Finally, she heard someone coming down the stairs. Aaron came into view, and Colby felt relief when she saw him. He walked over and removed the tape from her mouth.50

"Don't scream." he warned.51

"Oh, Aaron, I'm so glad you're here, I was so scared. You have to help me get out of here!"52

Aaron laughed mirthlessly.53

"You think I'm here to save you?" he asked incredulously.54

"I don't understand," Colby said as her brow furrowed, "aren't you?"55

Aaron ignored her question, and instead began muttering, more to himself than anyone, "If only you loved me. That's all I wanted." He turned to Colby.56

"Why don't you love me!?" He yelled the question at her with the rage shining in his eyes. He wore a crazed expression.57

"A-Aaron... what's g-going on? W-why are you like this?" the fear shook her voice so intensely that her words came out in a whisper.58

Suddenly, reality dawned on Colby. He wasn't there to save her. He was the one that had put her there.59

He ignore her question and walked to the figure on the ground. He kicked it. It didn't make a sound, but it turned on its side. Colby looked down. Shelly's face was staring back at her. As she filled her lungs with air, Aaron pulled out a gun and pointed it at her face.60

"Scream and I kill you right now." He threatened.61

"Why?" she asked in a whisper. "Why do you want to kill me? Why did you kill Shelly?!"62

Aaron paced in front of her.63

"She was getting in my way. She wanted you the same way I did. I couldn't allow for that to happen. So I got rid of her."64

"But... Shelly wasn't... Shelly didn't... She couldn't have-"65

"She did. She told me, a while ago. At first I didn't believe her, I thought it was just a phase. But it wasn't. Over the months, her affection for you grew, until it reached a disgusting level. Of course you didn't notice, with how pathetically oblivious you are. I couldn't allow her to get closer to you. Not with how I feel about you.
"So, today, on the bus, I told her that I'd get my parents to get all the stuff ready and we'd have a party there. So I told her to go straight there after school. I was waiting for her. I gagged and tied her up. I killed Shelly while you were still out.
"When I told you that I loved you, you laughed at me. You laughed right in my face. I don't like it when people laugh at me. Not one bit. So, I'm going to teach you what happens when you laugh at people, Colby." as he finished, he turned to her and smiled strangely.66

He walked to her and unchained her. He forced her down to the ground. As he pulled off her blouse, it became clear what he was going to do to her before he killed her. Frantically, she looked around for something, some sort of weapon. Something that she could use. She saw his gun on the ground, a few feet away. Nonchalantly, she tried to reach for it.67

Colby's hand was centimeters away, when his fist came crashing down on hers. 68

"So, you want to do this the hard way. Alright, have it your way!" Aaron said as he raised the gun to her.69

Then she saw them. The pair of scissors lying on the table above them. She pushed with all her might and managed to push Aaron off of her, which knocked the gun out of his hand. She stood quickly and grabbed the scissors just as Aaron picked the gun back up. They stood staring at each other.70

"My gun against those scissors. Let's see what wins, shall we?" he smirked.71

Colby threw the scissors at him. Bingo. Right in the chest. But she didn't hear the gun shot. She felt the blood on her fingers, and she looked down. The hole in her chest seemed much bigger than it was. She watched in wonder as the blood gushed out. Then there was nothing. Everything faded away. Gone.72

-Epilogue-74

"In breaking news, three Franklin High School students have been found dead in the basement of Melissa and Scott Sempter's home. One body belonged to their son, Aaron, the other two belonged to Aaron's friends, Colby Jones and Shelly McIntyre. The police have given no comment as of yet, but keep it tuned here for the latest coverage of this tragic story."75

Author notes

This story has two main Seven Deadly sins that are the center points. The obvious one is wrath, the less obvious one is greed. The antagonist [aka, the bad guy] is greedy and takes what he wants.

Interesting, simple set up and simple twists. Because the twists and plot line was simple I think you could have delved more into detail and emotion. But overall it was a good story with a good moral.

(Your epilogue was unnecessary by the way. Your story portrays the theme and moral very well and you don't have to state in such a blunt way. Leave evaluations like that to your readers. O.- Its fun to make them guess at your theme, and to perceive it their own way.)

    • It's been so long, but in case you're interested, I did change some of the story, including the epilogue. I would love to hear what you think of it.
