The Love Story - Chapter Four

~Chapter Four~1

I had been sitting in my room, crying for the past hour. Why the hell am I so upset? It’s just James. The same guy who had put a fake spider in my lunch box in fourth grade, or pissed his pants from laughing in grade five. I have more bad memories of him than good. And it seriously didn’t even cross my mind that I might like him, until today, but suddenly I’m heartbroken? 2

“Melanie! Dinner time!” My mum knocked on my door. I sat up.3

“Coming!” I yelled back, furiously wiping the tears from my eyes, and fixing my messy ‘bed hair’. 4

“Oh, by the way, James is at the door.” Mum added casually. 5

“What!?” I screamed. I sat up, brushed my hair back into a neat ponytail, grabbed my foundation stick and furiously covered any pimple or blemish I could see. Then I looked in my mirror. Shit! I was wearing the necklace he gave me. I took it off, threw it on my bed and ran downstairs. 6

“James…” I started, as I opened the front door. There was no one there. I took a step outside and got tackled by something. I landed with a thump on the ground and as I looked up, I saw James’ piercing green eyes and cute grin, staring down at me. 7

“What the hell are you doing?” I yelled. His grin faded. “What’s wrong with you!”8

“I…” He started. I picked myself off the ground.9

“That wasn’t a question. You gave me this million dollar necklace, and the next day, you start going out with this total bitch.” I yelled. “You are the biggest dickhead! I don’t even want to speak to you!”10

“Mel. Let me talk.” James said calmly.11

“Go ahead!” I yelled, crossing my arms.12

“I loved you so much. And that necklace…I have had that for the whole year we haven’t been together, it was supposed to be your birthday present, for this year.” He said.13

“Oh I know, so you decided to give it to me, and then go out with Katie.” I exclaimed. “Great logic.”14

“No! Listen!” He yelled. “I still care about you a lot, Mel. I always will, but Katie asked me out a long time ago, and what can I say…I’ve thought about it a lot. And I think she’s pretty cute, and I don’t know, it just seemed the easy way out. I don’t want that to sound bad, I care about Katie and everything, but I do still care about you.” He explained.15

“So, let me get this straight, you cheated on me with Monique and now your gonna try to cheat on Katie with me…” I replied. “Well you know what? Screw you!” I turned around, walked into my house and slammed the door. 16

“Melanie!” James yelled through the door. “It’s not like that!” 17

“Well why you don’t tell me what it’s like!” I yelled back, “Or even better, write it to me in one of those letters like you used to write. Does ‘Hey Mel, I’ll never cheat on you’ ring a bell?” I ran up the stairs, past my family having dinner, and straight back into my room. I picked my necklace off the bed and threw it, as hard as I could, at my mirror. Then I lay down and cried myself to sleep. Again.18
