I get to the airport just in time. Aunt Hannah is waiting for me at her seat. Once she sees me, she calls, “Takes long enough to get into mission wardrobe, huh?”3
“What? Oh, yeah.” I respond. It’s the same outfit like yesterdays.4
“Now boarding flight Nappanee, Ontario to Austria, Australia.” 5
“Come on, now,” Hannah says, grabbing my hand.6
“ID please, girls,” the stewardess at the desk says. “And tickets,” she adds.7
“Oh, right, here you go,” Hannah hands the stewardess her ID. 8
“Right here,” I say, showing my ID and health card.9
“Thank you, ladies, you may enter now,” 10
“Thanks,” 11
“Can I get you girls anything?” a flight attendant asks after an hour we lifted off. “A drink? A salad, a sandwich…?” 12
Why were these people so nice all the time? I looked at the stewardesses name tag. Anna was her name.13
“What kind of sandwiches do you have, ma’am?” Hannah asks.14
I get this annoyed look on my face. 15
“What kind of sandwiches do you have, ma’am?” I think, repeating the sentence in a mocking way. 16
“We have…um…chicken, turkey, ham, roast beef and…um…vegetarian,” Anna says. 17
Hannah looks at me. “What kind of sandwich would you like, dear?”18
“What kind of sandwiches do you have, ma’am?” I repeat to Hannah after we had eaten the sandwiches. I chose chicken on French with tomatoes and lettuce.19
“Calling someone ‘ma’am’ is polite, young lady,” Hannah retorts. She chose ham with tomatoes and lettuce on Italian bread. 20
“And dear? What the hell was up with that?” 21
“Being polite again,” 22
“Oh, brother. Oh, yeah, Kelsey left a message on my cell phone a few minutes ago, telling me to remind you to apologise to me for calling me a stupid miscreant yesterday.”23
“Right; sorry, Nikki,” 24
Who gave you permission to call me “Nikki,” eh? I want to say.25
Instead I say, “Apology accepted, Aunt Han,” 26
“When are we gonna be there?” I ask a few minutes later after an odd silence. 27
“Three more hours; be patient.” Hannah responds.28
Three more hours; be patient, I think mockingly. 29
“You look like you’re full of disdainfully today, Nicola,” Hannah says.30
“What the hell is disdainfully mean, Aunt Hannah?” I ask. 31
“Mockingly, is what it means. If you had finished junior high instead of coming to work for A.S.S.A.S.S.I.T., you would know what it meant.”32
A.S.S.A.S.S.I.T. stands for Ashley (she’s the founder) Spencer’s Assassination Subtle Students In Training. 33
