my notebook story 8

The next day, Misty and Dai were walking to give Deor a rest for while when Deor suddenly flung her head up in alarm.1

"What is it girl?" Dai asked, stroking the horse's neck, trying to soothe her. "What's wrong?"2

He looked over to Misty and saw her standing near the edge of the path listening intently.3

"What do you hear? Are we in for a fight?" he inquired.4

Misty glanced over her shoulder at him for a moment then turned back to listen. "You better bet that we are, buddy,"5

She shook her head grimly. "They're not very far away, whoever they are, and they certainly aren't on our side."6

Dai dodged one of Deor's hooves as it came down too close to his foot for comfort.7

Still trying to calm her, even though he knew it would be useless until they were a safe distance away from their possible enemy, he asked, "Where are they? How many do you think there are?"8

"Probably about twelve, maybe fifteen or twenty. I can't be sure. As to where they are, they're behind us."9

"Well, why on earth are you looking over there if the enemy is behind us?"10

Misty finally came back over to him and smiled. "Because I'm weird and I like to listen sideways?" She quirked a crooked grin up at him, then sobered. "I think there might be a few more over there," She nodded off to their left, where she had just been looking.11

"I wouldn't worry about them, though, at least not until we get a little farther on. I think they're just there to be used as a roadblock if we try to move ahead. I don't think they're gonna fight until we come to them."12

Dai rolled his eyes. "Oh, like that makes me feel any better."13

"Could you stop with the complaining? We're about to get into some serious trouble if we're not ready for the guys behind us. Come on, and let me get Deor someplace else so we can use both our hands for fighting."14

Misty took the reins out of Dai's hand and started leading the horse into the woods.15

Almost as soon as she had gotten Deor tied up a safe distance away, she felt Dai calling her through her mind.16

She gave the horse a quick pat and started running, fast as lightning, to help him.17

In just a few seconds she was back at his side, stringing an arrow to her bow.18

"That was fast." Dai stated in a rather surprised tone.19

Misty flashed him a playful grin before raising her bow to aim. "Well you did call me. What was I supposed to do? Take a leisurely stroll through the woods?"20

"I guess not," He laughed and stood beside her, taking aim with his bow as well.21

Then he lowered it as he leaned over to give her a quick kiss. "Thanks,"22

Their eyes locked for a moment and Misty smiled softly. "You're quite welcome, my friend."23

As the first of the attackers came into view, they fired their bows together.
