Memories

1

Once, an inseparable couple, Julie and Jake, went away to college. They chose to go down two separate roads.       2

He wanted to be a doctor, and her passion was to be a teacher.  Even though many promises had been made between the two, the distance took its toll on them. 3

Never could they have foreseen their future without the other.  After all, they had fallen in love at the age of fourteen, and remained so through high school; marriage was even discussed!4

Their romance was like that of a fairy tale, no disagreements, just lots of love, with promises of a lifetime together with more happiness. 5

Yet, as with most couples, things changed as they grew older.  He had met someone at the college he attended, and she had done the same.6

They were amazed that they felt no guilt over this.  Never could they had fathomed something like this.7

It was great to see the two of them finally back together, after being separated for the last thirty years. 8

As I walked into the kitchen I heard laughter.  Julie was there with Jake; they seemed so happy together as they shared memories.9

“Hi Julie, what’s so funny, I asked?”  "I find it exciting that after all these years of separation, you two still have that glow!”10

Julie smiled at me and said, “ we were remembering the time he tried so hard to impress me, and ended up spraining his ankle.”11

He has always claimed that it was part of his plan.  Jake laughed, adding, “definitely part of my plan,” as they all started laughing.12

Jake then  looked at Julie, “it worked didn't it?”  From that day on you and I were together.   13

Then tears filled his eyes, “what happened to us, he asked?”14

Julie pulled Jake close, replying, "it's called life, unfortunately.”  “But there’s one thing that was never lost” she said to all, “ our memories!”15

Julie nodded, “I wonder if we could start over, Jake?”  After-all, you’re alone and so am I!  “Could we go back and pick up the pieces,” Julie said out-loud, almost wishing she hadn't.16

Jake stood in shock it seemed, but then smiled at Julie, saying, “I’d sure like to try again.” “I missed you the first time around and don’t want to let you go again,” he chuckled, “I'm still in love with you, and always will be.”17

Julie blushed; for in all her loneliness, she had managed by dreaming that very thing. She so wanted Jake to love her!18

This is a very uplifting write! I hesitate to make editorial comments because you said it won't print as you submit it. I have had the same problem before. I know what you mean. I had to print my work, edit it with a pen, delete it from the site, and then retype and resubmit it in order to get it right. I'm sorry the site gremlins are picking on you today. It's a real shame. This is a charming little story. Good luck with the assignment, anyway. Sheryl
