A bright, orange-shaded sun slowly rises over the beautiful mountains, flooding its light upon the city of Averidge, Idaho. Morning traffic floods every road, including the freeways. School buses are swarming around their obvious destination. Trees are scattered everywhere, waving their branches as if they are greeting you with a fine “good morning.”1
But only one person remains in his home on this work-filled day. One kid who forgot to set his alarm clock last night.2
His mind causes him to slowly arise to a sunny day…and it just so happens that he realizes it’s a school day and it’s 9:23 AM!3
He flies out of his bed and shreds through a drawer. He grabs some clothes, slips them on, grabs his backpack, and smashes through the front door. He sprints to his school, having already missed first and second period.4
He glides up to the office, quickly getting a tardy slip, and rushing to third period. How could his day get much worse? He was already having trouble raising his grades! Why did he have to miss first period? It was the last day to turn in that huge project that he had been working on as hard as he could for a pretty long time. He felt plenty of depression and anger and uselessness as he sulked to third period.5
He walked in the room and hanged the teacher a tardy slip. She explained what they were doing today, and he went to his seat and sat down.6
“Krimson, man, where were you?”7
Krimson turned his head to his left, following the voice. It was his best friend, Kylar.8
“I was at my house,” Krimson replied. “I slept in on accident ‘cause I forgot to set my alarm clock last night.”9
“Well, try and remember to set it next time, ‘cause it might make your grade worse again. You picked the perfect day…”10
“I know, I know. I’m such a moron…”11
“Kylar?” the teacher shouted. “Krimson? You shouldn’t be talking when I’m talking! This is an important lesson!”12
“Yes, ma’am,” they both replied.13
* * * * *14
Later that day, during lunch, Krimson was hanging out in the gym with Kylar. They decided to play a little basketball. Krimson and Kylar were playing against one of the best basket ball players in the school, Jordan Michaels. Two on one. Krimson and Kylar knew this wouldn’t turn out well in their favor, but they were just in it for the fun.15
Krimson started out with the ball on the side of the court opposite their basket. Krimson passed it to Kylar. Kylar went up for a three-pointer, but Jordan blocked his shot. Krimson ran and grabbed it, and just threw it up to the basket.16
What a miracle! Krimson thought. It made it!17
“Whoa!” Kylar laughed. “Nice shot!”18
Krimson danced crazily, being his moronic self that he knew he was. But before Krimson was even paying any attention, Jordan had already checked the ball with Kylar, and he sped past them for a dunk.19
Man, Krimson thought. He’s really good! We’re never going to beat him!20
* * * * *21
It turned out that, since they had no chance against Jordan, they obviously lost. The bell rang, and they rushed to seventh period. English…man, how they both hated English. If they didn’t have English as a class, they’d probably be a lot happier. Or if they didn’t ever have to write, it would make it even better! In fact, if English didn’t even exist, it would probably make their world go ‘round!22
Today was the day they had to finish up writing their story. Krimson hadn’t gotten very far because of how much he fooled around. He took his paper out of his binder, and read over it to see if he could get any ideas:23
“A bright, orange-shaded sun slowly rises over the beautiful mountains. Morning traffic floods every road, including the freeways. School buses are swarming around their obvious destination. Trees are scattered everywhere, waving their branches as if they are greeting you with a fine ‘good morning.’”24
Wow, he thought. That’s good…but there’s not even a story there yet. It just sort of looks like a poem in a paragraph…25
He couldn’t really think of what the story would be about. All he could do (because it’s all his “moronic” brain would allow him to do) was describe the setting. Even though he was moronic, he was very imaginative.26
Brrrrrrring! The bell, obviously. He packed his stuff up as quickly as he could, and rushed out the door.27
But suddenly, there was an obstacle in the way: the girl of his dreams. His crush. Sarah Lenton.28
“Sorry,” Krimson said. “I was just trying to get to my class…”29
“Hey,” she said. “I was just wondering…uhh…will you go out with me?”30
Krimson’s brain failed to comply. His thoughts were no longer sorted in their correct file cabinets. What a strange time to ask a question like that.31
“Uhh…umm…sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sure…?”32
He definitely had a full ton of butterflies in his stomach. 2000 pounds.33
“Cool,” Sarah said. “Umm…I’ll talk to you about it after school then, I guess…?”34
“Yeah sure okay see you then bye!” Krimson was so nervous he decided to hurry to his class with out even deciding a place to meet Sarah. Oh, great…he thought.35
* * * * *36
Finally, the last period of the day. School was almost over. Just one more subject to go: Science.37
Today, they had to dissect frogs. For the guys, it wasn’t really that big of a deal (or at least it seemed that way). But for the girls…obviously, they didn’t enjoy it very much. They thought dissecting frogs was ‘gross’, but they didn’t realize the lesson they were learning.38
“First,” Mr. Scimons, the science teacher, announced, “Take your pins and pin the hands, legs, and the head to the foam of the tray…”39
Krimson’s lab partner, Stacy, started gagging. She covered her mouth and scooted over towards the sink.40
“Next, take the scalpel,”-the sound of Stacy vomiting interrupted for a brief moment-”and slowly cut down the center of the stomach from the head to the legs, but don’t push too hard, now, because you’ll cut the organs. I think we’re all trying not to fail science. Am I correct class?”41
“Yes,” the entire class bellowed.42
Krimson looked across the room at Kylar. After a few seconds, Kylar looked up and noticed him, and Krimson signaled to him, admitting that the inside of the frog was actually pretty disturbing.43
* * * * *44
Frog dissection was over (finally, Krimson thought), and it was time to run to his locker, pick up his stuff, and find Sarah (if possible) so he could get out of school ASAP.45
Soon after he ripped open his locker and swung his backpack onto his shoulders, he sprinted down the hall, looking for Sarah. Why was I so nervous? Krimson thought. Why couldn’t I have been brave enough to at leas plan somewhere to meet?46
Suddenly, and arm reached out and pulled Krimson towards its origin.47
Sarah!48
“So, where are we going?” she questioned.49
“Wait a minute, though…” Krimson said. “Why are we hiding here? Why are we even hiding at all?”50
“’Cause this is private business…”51
“Why? You think it’ll make you unpopular? Everyone’s going to find out anyway.”52
“Okay, that the heck.” She let go of his sleeve.53
* * * * *54
Krimson arrived home, already hungry for dinner at only 3:00 PM. When dinner finally came, he told his mom and dad about the situation. His mom offered to drive them wherever Krimson and Sarah pleased…as long as it was appropriate.55
* * * * *56
After school the next day, Krimson’s mom picked them up and dropped them off at a little place they wanted to spend their first dinner together, Averidge Café. Krimson couldn’t believe Sarah actually liked coffee. Krimson loved Chai Tea, which stunned Sarah. Today’s forecast: Krimson thought, A light shower of disbelief will hit Averidge Café…
57
“Krimson!” Sarah shouted. “Hello?”58
“Sorry,” He responded, “I guess I dozed off for a second…?”59
“I’ve been trying to get your attention…but, anyways, what do you think of this place? Isn’t it great?”60
“Yeah…I don’t come here often, but it’s pretty cool…”61
Krimson overheard yelling outside. Sarah didn’t even know until Krimson reacted and started eavesdropping: 62
“This system is corrupt! You can’t run a gang like this…”63
“Yo, man, who are you to be judging what I do?”64
“I don’t know…you just can’t run a gang like that. You’re not gonna get anybody to join a gang like that…”65
“Then why do I have 20 people backing me up, here, yo?”66
“I don’t know. I’m just really…I don’t know; I’m just stating my opinion…”67
“Are you a cop in disguise or somethin’?”68
“Uh…no…I think I’ll just shut up and leave you alone, now.”69
And then the bang of a gun was heard.70
Everyone in the café was screaming and panicking, and Krimson kept Sarah tight under his arms.71
Suddenly, the door bust open to the café and 20 or so men dressed in purple entered.72
“This is a robbery that’s taking place, right here, right now. You can’t stop us, yo.”73
A man came up and grabbed Krimson around the neck. Krimson released his grip on Sarah and another man held a gun to her head.74
I wouldn’t expect there to be a gang in Idaho, Krimson thought. Then the man with the grasp upon him took out a gun and shoved it in Krimson’s ear.75
“Okay, dawgs, we got the money. Let’s get out of here!”76
Sirens wailed, making their way to the café. Sarah was taken along with the men and Krimson was left on ground with bruises all over his body.77
Getting dizzy, Krimson thought. I can’t feel my legs…78
* * * * *79
Krimson awoke on his bed inside his home with his head aching. A few policemen were in the room, along with his parents.80
“He’s finally woken up, honey,” his mom notified his dad.81
“Ugh...” mumbled Krimson.82
“Honey, are you okay?”83
“Not…really…”84
“Son,” one of the policemen asked; “what happened at the café? Can you remember?”85
“My girlfriend and I were eavesdropping on…Sarah!”86
“What?”87
“They got her!”88
“We’ll worry about that later; can you finish telling us what happened?”89
“Anyways, we were eavesdropping on a discussion between a gang leader and an innocent man outside. Everyone heard a gun shot and we all…” Krimson coughed. “…Excuse me; we all panicked and the gang leader and his…well, gang…entered and robbed the bank. Two men grabbed hold of me and Sarah. They took Sarah and left me on the ground. That’s when I went unconscious. I have no idea where they went or who they are.”90
“That’s okay, son,” a policeman said. “We just wanted to know what happened to you…”91
“We have to save Sarah!”92
* * * * *93
Krimson regained consciousness after a long nap in a car to the police station. The policemen collected the report of the scene from Krimson. After a while, Krimson ordered to go on a hunt for Sarah with the policemen.94
“I’m sorry, son,” a policeman answered. “We can’t let you go with us…”95
“We have to save her!” Krimson exclaimed. “I’m gonna find her with you, and I don’t care if you say ‘no’.”96
“But…”97
“I’m coming!”98
“Should we let him, Frank?”99
“I don’t think we need to put up a fight with him,” Frank replied.100
“Then take me and let’s go!”101
* * * * *102
“Okay, son,” a policeman told Krimson; “We’ve found out where the gang’s hideout is. They’ve commited many crimes in the past. We’ve hunted down as many of them as we could. They should be holding Sarah there. Don’t worry, son, we’ll get your girlfriend.”103
“Thanks, you guys,” Krimson said; “Thanks a lot.”104
They pulled up outside of a warehouse and exited the car. Krimson hoped the things he learned in Karate would help him do this. And the pistol he had in his hand.105
“I wonder if we should be letting him use that weapon, Frank…?”106
“Oh, what the heck,” Frank said; “It’s fine. If he wants his little girlfriend back so bad he can use it.”107
Krimson sneered at Frank.108
“Okay, kid…I don’t know if you should be doing this. You could get killed…”109
“I’m coming anyways!”110
“I’m gonna have an officer come pick you up right now…”111
“No!”112
“Drop the gun, kid.”113
“I don’t think so.”114
“Uhh…yeah. I think so.”115
The officer grabbed the gun from Krimson.116
“Get back over to the car, kid.”117
“I’m going, I’m going…”118
Krimson sat on the ground near the car and waited. He glared up at the sky. Rain started to come down upon him. One hit his eye and he blinked.119
He wiped his eye off…but he started to create his own rain. He was worried about Sarah. He had had a crush on her ever since elementary school. He couldn’t just let her die.120
He thought about how abnormal this situation was for his life. He’d never been in a situation like this. He had never lived in California where gangs resided. Idaho was very nice and friendly…yet, a load of blacks are running a gang in Averidge. They must’ve come from California, he thought.121
Two bright lights turned a street corner and stopped when they reached Krimson. Okay, thought Krimson. Time to go home…122
A man emerged from the car. But this was no police officer…123
He was dressed in purple.124
He grabbed the neck of Krimson’s shirt and pulled him up off the ground. He set him down, spun him around, and put his arms around his neck.125
Another man exited the car with a shotgun in his hands.126
The officers are in the building! Krimson thought. They don’t know I’m out here about to die.127
“Don’t move, kid.”128
The man with the grip around Krimson’s neck dragged him into the back of the car.129
The man with the shotgun got back in the passenger seat.130
But the other man punched Krimson in the face.131
And everything went black.132
* * * * *133
Krimson awoke in a chair.134
To the left of him were Frank and the other officer.135
To the right, Sarah.136
Each of them were tied up with ropes wrapped around their chests and the chair. And there were ropes around their legs and the chair’s legs. And the chairs were glued to the carpet.137
They were in a small bedroom in a house. There was a small light hanging from the ceiling with a pull-string to turn it on. There was a window to the left of everyone. The room was painted purple with a white door. And there was no furniture anywhere in the room (except the chairs). The officers were stripped of all their guns and badges and radios and whatnot.138
A gang member entered the room through the white door with an Uzi in his hand. “Alright,” he stated; “You two cops are comin’ with me.”139
He called two more members into the room (also armed with Uzis). They untied the officers and held the Uzis to their heads.140
They shoved the men out of the room and nothing was left but Krimson and Sarah.141
“I’m so sorry…” Krimson told Sarah.142
“It’s alright; It’s not your fault…”143
“But I was the one who said we should go to the café…that’s what got us into this whole mess.”144
“Well, we just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time; That’s all.”145
“Sure…”146
“Hey…I have a pocket knife in a pocket the men didn’t bother to check…” She smiled at Krimson.147
“How’re you gonna get it out?”148
“It’s in a back pocket. And my hands are back there…”149
“Can you reach it?”150
She pulled it out and it shined in Krimson’s face.151
Obviously, she could reach it.152
She flipped it open and sawed at the ropes. They eventually came apart.153
“There!” She grinned at Krimson. He gave a nervous smile back.154
She walked over to Krimson and cut the ropes off. She gave him a quick peck on the cheek. He blushed.155
Krimson yanked the window open and they jumped out.156
They ran over to a tree and kneeled down. Krimson peeked around the tree to check to make sure there were no more of those gang men.157
But there were plenty of them. All having a party on the driveway. With music and food and everything.158
Crap! Krimson thought. There’s gotta be a million of them! Wait…that was a little exagerrative…159
“What’re we gonna do?” Sarah asked…not very quietly.160
“SHHHHH!!” Krimson commanded…not very quietly either.161
And the music stopped playing.162
Great…now look what you did, Sarah…but wait a minute…it’s not really possible they could hear us since it’s so loud…?163
“Sorry!” one of the men yelled; “The DJ was having a little trouble with one of his records!” And the music continued.164
Dang, Krimson thought. That was a close one…165
They snuck across the street and rang the doorbell to a house.166
A girl around their age answered the door. “Hello?”167
“I know you might not believe us, but we really need to use your phone. These gang people are trying to kill us!”168
“There’s a gang in Averidge?”169
“I know you might not believe it, but, I swear, it’s true!”170
“Okay, I’ll let you in.”171
Krimson ran to the phone and called 911 while Sarah and the other girl sat down and chatted. How could they be chatting when they should be panicking? Krimson thought.172
“Hello, this is the APD,” a woman officer answered; “How can we help you?”173
“We’re being assaulted by a gang!”174
“Dang it…okay, where are you?”175
“Uhh…” Krimson asked the girl where they were and told the officer.176
“Okay; we’ll send someone right over.”177
Krimson walked over to Sarah and the girl (named Kelly, apparently) and told them they should hide in the backyard or something.178
*The rest was printed out for the final draft, but somehow, I forgot to save it, so I will type it later.*179
