Farming: Worlds Apart (Continued)

I woke up the next morning feeling totally refreshed. I hopped out of bed and sauntered through the long halls of the house. After putting on some clothes, I decided I should get the two troublemakers up. I sure wasn't going to do all the work. (Again...)1

The two had strategically placed their rooms directly across from each other. This was mainly so they could continue their chats (fights) throughout the early hours of the morning. I opened the door to Cam's room to see the blankets thrown across the room, the bed bare; his room was an absolute mess. Perplexed, I opened the door cautiously to Sarah's room. (Females don't like it much when you peek in their rooms... don't ask how I know.) She was also gone from her bed. At least she had made her bed before she left...2

I decided not to pursue the matter. They were adults and they could take care of themselves. It was when I saw the vacant spaceship landing space that I really got angry. I sighed, knowing that there was no way to kill them until they returned from their joyride.3

When my stomach emitted a ferocious growl, I came to realize that I hadn't eaten at all yesterday. I rummaged through the cupboards and the refrigerator until I found a mushroom that still looked fresh enough to eat. I diced it up and fried it with an egg (Yes, yes we have eggs on Kazinga... just don't ask what they come from.) to make an omelet.4

After eating my meal, my stomach happily stopped its ranting. I knew I was late for the squarns' feeding time by then, so I hurried out to the barn. As I entered, a surge of frightened cows charged up to me; a seemingly human face was enough to make them calm down a bit. The squarns had apparently finished their mating and lazed about contentedly. Little orange balls of fur littered the floor as they rolled around in the dirt enjoying life for the first time. Really, it was quite cute.5

I opened the barn door and let the cows run out, fearing that in their panic they might step on a newborn. They wouldn't go far from civilization and soon we could bring them back to Earth and set them free. I fed each of the squarns and even managed to klim them. (Similar to human milking I believe.) I placed the buckets of klim to the side and went to brush Cora. She was the only squarn that didn't look happy.6

"What's wrong, Cora?" I asked. She responded with a disheartened moan. I walked through the barn and counted the newborns. Nineteen. One was missing...7

That's when I once again heard the obnoxious sound of the spaceship landing. I ran out to meet it. The troublemakers came around the side of the ship laughing about a joke I didn't hear. When they saw me, they froze.8

"I told him we should tell you we were leaving but he just wouldn't..." Sarah began. 9

"Where have you two been? You know how much gas prices are! You can't just go on joyrides all the time." I responded. That's when Cam chimed in.10

"Hey man, calm down. The early Kor catches the Sandoby y'know?" He hastily added, "and just for the record, she's a little liar. It was her idea to go before you woke up!"11

Sarah gave him a cold look that made him shut up quickly. Without waiting for another word, Sarah ran up to the spaceship and pressed a button, opening the hatch. A lone cow wandered out.12

"You see, we saw that Cora didn't have a mate because the remaining cow wasn't the right gender... so we had to get another! I'm sorry Mark!"13

"It's alright," I said. I was actually happy that Cora could still mate. I wouldn't tell them that, though. As Cam went back to close the hatch, though, a hand emerged from the dark interior of the ship. A human boy, probably around nineteen years old, stumbled out and blinked a few times. He had black hair that reached almost down to his shoulders. His bangs were swept past his face further every time he moved. His eyes were blue and he wore long jeans, cut in several places. He wasn't wearing any shoes, but Sarah couldn't stop staring at his T-shirt, covered in a sparkly substance.14

After orienting himself, he looked around warily." Where... where am I?" He asked cautiously. Sarah, still dumbfounded, said nothing so Cam chimed in. "Mars of course! What's it look like?"15

"Who are you?" The boy asked. "You think I'm stupid? Nobody can breathe in space..."16

"Actually, you can. While in the ship we used bruzo gas on you to enable you to breathe. How'd you get on the ship anyways?" Cam replied.17

"I was milking my cow when all of a sudden everything was dark... so... you guys are like... aliens? That's so cool!"18

"Yea, yea I suppose. Why don't you come inside and have something to eat? That was a long ride." The three went inside leaving me to ponder the situation. I'd have to call my boss back home and ask him what to do about this... for the time being, I guess he'd just have to stay here.19

"Hey what's your name anyways?" I heard Sarah ask in the distance.20

"I'm Alex, Alex Mandeli."
