It was almost Christmas time1
There I stood in another line2
Trying to buy that last gift or two3
I'm really in the Christmas mood4
Standing right in front of me5
Was a little boy waiting anxiously6
Pacing around like little boys do7
And in his hands he held8
A pair of shoes9
I watched the little boy curiously, wondering what he was doing out here so late. Looking no older than 7 or 8, he looked far too young to be out on his own. In his hands were a box of bright red shoes, certainly not for him. They looked expensive, aswell. Wondering how he managed to get the money, he stepped forwards in the line.10
And his clothes were worn and old11
He was dirty from head to toe12
And when it came his time to pay13
I couldn't believe what I heard him say14
Putting the shoes on the counter, he smiled to the clerk. The clerk just frowned at his dirty clothes, before eyeing the red shoes he wanted. Pushing them towards the cashier, he started to say something I didn't expect.15
Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please16
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size17
Could you hurry Sir?18
Daddy says there's not much time19
You see, she's been sick for quite a while20
And I know these shoes will make her smile21
And I want her to look beautiful22
If Momma meets Jesus, tonight.23
I was speechless. The cashier didn't soften, he just nodded and beckoned for the boy to give him the money. Eagerly, he handed it over, looking from side to side and glancing at the clock. No doubt, he wanted to get back to his Mom before she passed away. It was sad, how the little boy seemed so happy to give his Mom this gift.24
They counted pennies for what seem like years25
And cashier says 'Son there's not enough here.'26
He searches his pockets franticly 27
And he turned and he looked at me28
And he said Momma made Christmas good at our house29
Most years she just did without30
Tell me Sir31
What am I gonna do?32
Somehow I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes33
I felt sympathy, as he turned to look at me, close to tears. The cashier just shrugged and regarded him with a slightly raised eyebrow. Clutching the shoes to his chest, a single tear slid down his cheek and onto the floor. 'Momma would love these..just what she wanted..' He put his head down and started to walk away, but I called out and stopped him.34
So I layed the money down35
I just had to help him out36
And I'll never forget37
The look on his face38
When he said 'Momma's gonna look so great.'39
I smiled and ruffled his hair happily. The least I could do was give him the money. He hugged me tight, joy twinkling in those green eyes. Letting go, he grabbed the wrapped box and looked back at me briefly.40

I knew I caught a glimpse of heavens love as he thanked me and ran out. 49
I know that God had sent that little boy to remind me50
What Christmas is all about51
I watched him run through the door, and I swore I saw snow white feathers fly behind him. Shrugging, I paid for my gift and trodded out the door, but as I stepped onto the snow, I saw a pure white feather laying in a boy-sized footprint. Smiling, I hoped that the little boy could guide his Momma tonight.52

As I lay in bed, I dreamed of a little boy, dirty from head to toe, with brown hair, green eyes, and angel wings taking the hand of a frail yet beautiful looking women and walking with her towards the light. What caught my eye was the beautiful red shoes that the sick women was wearing. The little boy looked back at me and smiled. Standing before them was a man with long brown hair and twinkling brown eyes, none other than Jesus. 61
