Once upon a time , a long long time ago, there was a faraway land, where the sun shone nearly every day, and it didn't rain very often and if it did rain it only rained on a night time. This land was a beautiful place of lovely forests and woods. In the middle of one of these woods was a little clearing of grass and on all sides were little cottages for the little goblins that lived there. All these goblins took care of their houses, well nearly all of them.1

One day the chief goblin of the village was having a birthday so they all thought we'll have a nice party. So they put all the trestle tables they had in the middle of this little clearing and everyone brought things to eat and things to drink. Usually they only drank dew that they collected off the flowers early on a morning, anyway everyone came for the party and everyone was settling down when there was a whirring and a whirring, 'brrr brrr' like that, and everyone said 'oh, what's this?' and when they looked above there were these beautiful dragonflies coming down from the sky. Sitting on the back of the first one was the queen fairy and behind her were the ladies that looked after her.2

They landed on the grass and the chief of the village went up and said 'Hello your majesty, i'm glad you visited us' and she said I've brought you a little present for your birthday' and she gave him a lovely green cloak and some lovely green curly toed shoes.3

'Oh! how lovely' he said 'thank you very much. Would you like to join our party? There are lots of lovely things to eat and drink and theres plenty of room for everyone'4

'That would be lovely' said the queen fairy. 5

So her and all the ladies sat down and the yhad a lovely tea. ooh ! there were all sorts of things like tiny sauages on sparkly sticks and tiny iced cakes, fairy cakes of course with sweets on top and little tiny triangular sandwiches with tiny slices of nice things inside that everyone likes with all the crusts cut off.6

When they were finished the fairy queen said to the head goblin of the village 'That was delightful and now do you think i could inspect your little village?'7

'Of course you can' he said'We shall go and do that'8

So while everyone else was clearing up the chief of the village and the queen fairy and two ladies in waitng went dow nthe rows of little goblin houses.9

'oooh arent they pretty' said the queen fairy 'That's a nice one. ooh that one next door is lovely' and so it went on down the rowsof houses when all of a sudden she said' oh goodness me! What's the matter with that house there? Is it empty?' 10

The windows of this house were dirty and the curtains wnted washing. The grass was a s high as the windows. And the front gate was broken. And the slates were off the little roof.11

'No it's not empty'said the chief goblin'That's where goblin scaley-feet lives.12

'Goblin scaley-feet? That's a funny name' said the queen.13

'That's becasue he never gets washed'explained the chief goblin 'and one day when we went to the swimming baths everyone saw his black feet and that's why he gets called goblin scaley-feet.But he is lazy. He won't do anything and we can't get him to work'14

'oh' said the fairy 'I shall have to see to this,' so she said to one of her ladies 'go and get my magic wand from out of the case' so the lady in waitng went and got it for her queen.15

Then the fairy queen stood in front of the goblins house and went tap tap tap and all silver sparks flew out of the magic wand and she said 'Goblin scaley-feet, I am talking to you, goblin scaley feet wake up. I want you to start work to clean everything and don't stop working until I tell you to. Then off the ladies-in-waiting and the chief goblin went to look at the rest of the cottages and after that the fairies got back onto the dragonflies and flew away.16

Meanwhile goblin scaley-feet woke up in bed and said 'What was that? What was that? Goodness me look at the time, look at the time! I'll have to get up and he leapt up out of bed . 'Look at the state of this bedroom' he said' I will have to do it' he thought, 'I'll have some breakfast'then he thought 'no I haven't got time for breakfast I must work.'17

So he cleaned his bedroom. Then he dashed downstairs. The sink was full of pots.18

'oh dear oh dear I'll have to start work' so he started on the ktichen and then the front room and then the hall and then it came to dinner-time and all he had time for was a little tiny sandwich. He dashed out the back and he said 'I will have to cut that grass' and so he cut the grass. Then he went out the front and he said 'goodness me' and he kept working and working.19

Later on some of the other goblins were looking out of their windows and they were saying things like 'whats the matter with goblin scaley-feet? He's been working for two days now and never stopped'  The mayor of the village went up to goblin scaley-feet and said'you will have to take it easy,' but goblin scaley-feet said 'oh no i must keep working. I have lots and lots to do.20

Well on the third day he had finished all the work in the house and he had cut the grass and he had done the front garden and he was just mending the gate when there was a whirring and down came the dragonflies again with the queen fairy and two ladies-in-waiting. She went up to the goblins house and said 'goblin scaley-feet you have done a lovely job there. Everything is perfect and i want you to keep it like that. Work during the day and sleep on a night but you must never be lazy ever again.21

'Oh no' he said 'I like living in this house now. All clean and my garden's nice and all the goblins are lovely to me. Before they used to shout at me.'22

So the fairy queen said 'right'  and she tapped the magic wand again and all the sparks flew off it .23

'Now' she said 'You can go back to being a normal little goblin but we won't call you goblin scaley-feet anymore. We shall call you Brian. Would you like to be called Brian?'24

'Oooh yes' he said 'That's a nice name Brian. So I am goblin Brian' and he said 'Thank you very much for helping me' and the queen said25

'Righto goblin Brian we'll come back to see you soon' so everyone said 'goodbye' and off they flew on their dragonflies.26

And goblin Brian went back into his house and made himself a cup of tea and had two biscuits and had a little rest.27

Later that day goblin Brian was very tired and he went to bed and had a lovely long sleep but he woke up bright and early and did his breakfast and did his work that he had to do and then he went out into the street. And everyone was saying'hello Brian' 'hello Brian' and he was going into different little houses and seeing if they were alright. If they were sick he would he would make them meals and do the garden for them and go messages. He was busy all day and everyone thought'what a lovely goblin he has turned out to be when you think of how he used to be.'28

And so it went on for weeks and weeks. But one day there was a sad thing in the village ,very sad, the chief goblin of the village ,who was very very old died and everyone was so sad. But after they put him in the goblin cemetry they said'we will have to have a meeting becasue we will have to have a new mayor' They went into the big ton hall and they were all talking about who to have as the new mayor.29

'well' said one of the goblins' I think Brian would make a lovely mayor. And another goblin said 'yes I think he would be the best ever'30

so they all said 'We will have to have a vote. Everyone who votes for Brian put your hands up' And there wasn't a one who didnt put their hands up' Some even cheated and put two hands up!They said 'Right we will have Brian for our mayor. We will have to ask him.'31

They sent for him and said 'Brian will you be our mayor?'32

'Oh' he said 'I will be greatly honoured to be mayor' 33

'you will have to move out of your house into the mayors house'they told him and the next day everyone helped him to move all of his stuff out of his little house into the mayors big house.34

Two weeks later, when he had settled in he said I am going to have a party.I am going to invite the queen fairy and the two ladies-in-waiting,35

the post office man, the baker and everyone in the village.36

So he did. And they all came and they all had a lovely time. Then it was time for them all to go home and everyone was shouting 'three cheers for the queen hip hip hooray hip hip hooray 'and off she went on her dragonflies.37

Everyone tidied up for Brian and he was left all on his own. Then he sat in his big chair and looked around and thought '|By gum its a fine job fine job. Now everyone likes me. Well when i think of how I used to be!'38

and the queen fairy had said 'I think you will make a lovely husband for one of my fairies'39

'oooh' and he thought about that and he said 'oooh later on I will have to go and see the fairies and see what they are like'40

And with that he put his lights off downstairs, went upstairs and leapt into his little shower and when he had got himself all dry he went to bed and went sound asleep and the next morning the sun was shining as usual and he thought 'what a lovely little goblin I am. Ooooh I am so pleased I changed. So pleased!' And that's the end of that little story. Goodbye.41

Hello. this is another story about Brian. Brian had been mayor, leader of the village for quite a long time now and he had done lots of good. He had made a community centre in the middle of the village so that when people wanted help for anything they went there. If you wanted help with your garen or your house or anything, you could go there and someone would help you.People used to gothere for meetings to talk to each other. One friday they were in there having a little meeting when one of the goblins said'It's a national holiday tomorrow,everyone is off. Do you think it would be a good idea to go for a picnic?'42

'Oh a picnic!' said another goblin 'I havent been on a picnic for ages'43

while another goblin said 'I think that's a great idea'44

So they spread it about the village that there was a picnic tomorrow starting at nine o'clock and everyone had to be there. The next day at nine o'clock all the village was there, all with bags packed full of picnic things.Well you know what it is like on a picnic-you get all sorts don't you?45

Anyway off they went over two fields, through a wood, down a bank to a little stream to where they were having a picnic. Some of the goblins decided to sit about in the sun while others started painting and drawing. Other goblins were playing games. Most of them were in the stream splashing about merrily and at dinner time they all sat round, put the cloths on the grass and all had the picnic. And it didn't matter what you brought you could just help yourself to whatever you liked. For instance Brian loved sausage rolls so he had four. 46

At the end of the day they packed everything up and went back up the hill, through the woods and two fields back to the village. When they got there one of them said 'where's Timmy and Tom the little 'uns?'47

Well they looked and they couldn't find Timmy and Tom. 'They were with us on the picnic' they all said. So they thought everyone will have to go back and look for them. Oh dear oh dear. They couldn't find them anywhere. It was getting a bit dark then so Brian said 'I have got an idea , you all go back to the villag, I have something to do@48

They all went back to the village and Brian ran through the two fields and then over another field to the fairy village. He went into the fairy village and a fairy ame up to him and she had a lovely golden dress on, ooh it was lovely and she was a pretty fairy and she said'who are you?'49

'I am Brian ' he said'and I want to see the queen if you please' 50

'I shall go and see' she said and she went to the Queen and said 'someone called Brian wants to see you'51

'oh' said the fairy Queen'show him in quickly chop chop'52

Off she went and brought back Brian to see the queen. The queen said'What can i do for you Brian?' Brian told her how they had lost tow of the little uns Timmy and Tommy when they were on a picnic.53

'What would you like me to do?' asked the Queen54

'Can you send six of your dragonflies with fairies on so you can look down and see if you can see them from the sky?'55

'That's a good idea' said the Queen fairy'we will do that immediately' and she got two of her ladies to go off and organise it and off went the six dragonflies each with a fairy riding on it.56

While the Queen and Brian were waiting Brian said That's a very pretty fairy that talked to me with the gold dress on'57

The Queen said'Oh yes she is one of my best fairies. Her name is Rose'58

'She is very nice' Brian said.59

Just then the fairies came back with the dragonflies 'We have found the little uns! They are up a hill near a stream and they are asleep in a cave at the top'60

Brian said 'Thank you very much' and off he went back to the village where him and two more goblins went to the cave at the top of the hill near a stream where Timmy and Tommy were fast asleep. They woke them up and took them back to the village. And everyone in the village started singing 'For he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow and so say all of us'61

And they all gave Brian a big cheer.62

And Brian went back to his house very pleased. The other goblins were saying'wasn't that clever of Brian to think of getting the dragonflies and fairies to find our little uns?' and off they went home too.63

Brian went into his house and as usual had a shower and a little cup of tea and went to bed. And he was sitting in bed waiting to go to sleep and he thought 'eeeh it's been a nice day. It's a good job we found those two little uns. Oh! and what about the fairy called Rose in a golden dress' and he fell asleep thinking about the fairy called Rose in a golden dress. And that's the end of that story. Toodleoo. 64
