“You like a boy?”1
A stream of giggles ran from their mouths.2
“Yes, he is very sweet. Did I tell you what he said to me?”3
“What, on the internet?”4
“What’s the problem with that? We talk.”5
“Yeah, but not face to face.”6
“How do you even know that’s what he’s really like?”7
“I just know, ok. He is really sweet, and he cares for me.”8
“Either that or you just think he is hot!”9
All of the girls rolled over laughing, harder and harder. The sun was down and the parents asleep, but the girls were still there, wasting the night away in worthless banter. 10
“So who is this mystery man, anyways?”11
“Um, well, I don’t know. He’s…”12
“Come on! Tell us! You know you can trust us!”13
Lila looked at all their smiling faces and realized that it was true. She would tell them. She could trust them.14

“So, I have this problem with Brian.”16
“Yeah, uh huh, what?”17
Lila looked at Noel with pain. 18
“He hasn’t called since Thursday, after we hung out. I can’t figure him out. He won’t come to see me at my locker, doesn’t leave me notes. He just isn’t around.”19
“He’s probably is just busy. “20
“I thought about that. But he has always called, always came to my locker, and said hi, even during football. He just….”21
Noel slammed her phone shut, with a sudden impatient look. 22
“Give him some slack. Guys get like that. Um, hey, I told Andy I would meet him like two minutes ago. Can we finish this later?”23
“Um, yeah. Ok. Have fun.”24
“I’ll call you tonight. I need you to help me with the algebra assignment for tomorrow.”25
Noel sauntered out the door. She latched onto Andy’s arm, flipped her hair and followed him to her new car, where more than a few other kids were already waiting. They hopped in and tore quickly out of the lot. They were off to a party, a movie, who knew. Lila didn’t. But she put a smile on her face and left the school also, to a less new and less full car.26

“Did you hear about what Lila said?”28
“Yeah, she fully went off on Brian in front of everyone!”29
“What an idiot.”30
“‘Who cares what he did! He is so hot.”31
“He should have been yours, Noel.” 32
“Well he is now”. 33
“What? Seriously?”34
“We got back together after she left Aaron’s. He doesn’t care about her anyways. He has always wanted me back. And he is a great kisser.”35
All of the girls laughed. Lila stood across the hall, back turned to the clique and head in locker full of books. She wiped a tear from her cheek, grabbed her bag and walked away. They watched her pass. 36
.37
“Hey there Lila. How’s that book coming?”38
She looked at the bible in her hands, and squeezed it tight to her chest. They giggled as she turned and walked ahead.39

“Mmmmmm. Sometimes I wonder if God is really out there watching me. And then he sends the rain. It is easy to love him in the rain.” 41
Lila stuck her hand out and let the rain drip over he nails and flow down her bare arms. The rain was cold. 42
“You know, I think that I would like to visit Ireland. I heard it rains a lot there. What do you think?”43
She kept her hands up and waited for Jamie to answer, who sat on a blanket on the wet lawn. When he didn’t speak, she turned to him.44
“Well?”45
“I think this is perhaps one of the greatest moments of my life.”46
‘Why is that?”47
“Because it is raining, and when you say you feel this close to God, I feel even closer to you, and even closer to him.” 48
He turned his face down, as if he was nervously contemplating something.49
“What is it?”50
“I think I might love you.” 51
“You… you do?”52
“So much.”53
She sat down beside him on the blanket, wrapped her hand in his and smiled. 54
“I think this might be one of the greatest moments of my life.”55
“Why?”56
“Because I think I might love you too.”57
He kissed her tenderly on the forehead, laid back and stared at the sky. Lila didn’t feel the least bit scared. She new this was real; more real than anything she had ever known. She had lost so many friends over the years, but she sat there, a blue quilt on a green lawn under a gray shy, with the only friends she would ever need right beside her. The man she loved and the heavenly father that had and would love her even more. She felt complete. 58

Author notes
I chose this pre-write for the first prompt of your aphorism. I think this relates, just because our life are often a series of letdowns from people we trusted, from our friends and others. But there is always something better coming.

It kind of jumps around a lot, but overall I really liked it... even tho the beginning confused the hell out of me...
Is the guy at the beginning the guy at the end?
I'm confused...

good
Very good, very interesting. I understand completely. That Noel chick is just like my friend Ty. Teenagers really can be horrible at times..lol. I like how the girl looked to god to find the answer. I really do. I haven't seen any stories on here about god and love in the same thing. Good job. I really love it. Good luck in the contest!

Touching little story, which is unfortunately true...jeez, some teens can be so heartless.

Very well written, and the emotions, albeit a bit abrupt at the end, were very good.

The first time I read this I was kind of confused so I had to read over it a second time! I'm still a little unsure what the significance of the beginning mentioning of the internet guy is and also as someone else mentioned it would be a lot clearer if you mentioned names in last paragraph just to avoid confusion. However I really like the idea that you wrote about and it had a nice sweet ending. In a (hopefully not patronizing) way it took me back to my teenage years and made me smile remembering all the fallouts that took place over guys - hey I'm only 26 now I still have them lol Thank you for entering and good luck!

i liked the last part though (a lot), it was very touching, and realistic

It was a bit confusing... i only got it entirely with the help of the author notes and by going through it again.
I think you should take note that the last section, where they tell each other of love, it is not clear who the guy is.. cus it never mentions "Noel" in it,.. so it got me thinking about the internet guy instead... who is by the way who?!
In my opinion it was a great lot confusing..
And to be honest not my style.. but thats just me, and i think people will like this more than i have
Keep it up.

Aww!! This is so cute!! I love the idea, and the beginning was great!
One of the only problems I found was lack of details. Like I said before, I liked the ideas, but there were kind of confusing. I didn't understand the relationship between Lila and Noel, and I didn't understand who all the boys were, or how the first section relates to the rest of the story.
Jamie is such a sweetheart, but I want more details on him. How did they fall in love, where did they meet, etc?
Great job though, and keep it up!

Honestly, there wasn't a whole lot of point to this story. Lila and noel were just good friends at first, and of course slowly over time friend ship turns to aquantance, turns to rivals (etc...) I guess this is sorta just showing the way many relationships develop (my case especially. The end was basicly, wouldn't it be great that after all that crap with friends, you can still have that great ending with the guy that loves you enough no to cheat and be a jerk (like brian..). I'm glad you liked though.
