Hazel Hair Boy (♥)

‘His hazel-brown hair looks even more beautiful in the soft light of the classroom.’ Emily thought. Right in front of her sat the boy she’d secretly been dreaming about, Jake Lakes. She felt like wrapping his luxurious hair around her finger, twirling it forever and never having to let go. Laying her head on her arms - which were by now already sprawled across her desk - Emily sighed.1

Looking at him -her knight in shining armor, who still has to hop up on his breath-taking white horse and come for her- was sometimes too much to bear, but she couldn’t stop. Out of the other twenty students in her 7th period science class, her bright green eyes would always float over to Jake. By now, she had memorized ever line and ever curve on his perfect, tan face. If she were an artist, she could draw him with her eyes closed, and she would kiss that picture every night before going to bed. But drawing wasn’t one of her strong suits, so she had to settle for a couple of yearbook pictures and forty-five minutes at the end of the day in science class. 2

Emily was watching him tap his pen- mentally recording how many times he would hit it against the wooden desk, how hard he struck, how fast he ‘tapped’- when a beeping sound rang from the loud speaker, school was officially over and so were her forty-five minutes of Jake. 3

She slowly raised up her head and closed her eyes for a bit before grabbing her Jansport backpack and lifting up out of her seat. By the time she looked back at Jake’s seat, he was already gone. ‘He’s probably got plenty of plans for tonight, it’s Friday for crying out load!’ she though to herself, a little disappointed she didn’t get to say good-bye. 4

With her backpack slung over one shoulder, Emily headed to the right side of the classroom - the exit. Once she was in the long and narrow hallway, there was barely anyone. They had all gone home faster than usual, but then again it was Friday, so Emily didn’t think much of it. 5

All the way at the end of the hall, past the red lockers and the water fountains - the ones that spewed out hot, tap water - were the two clear doors leading outside. As soon as she barged through them, her weekend would begin. ‘Ugh why does the science class have to be all the way on the other side of the hallway?!’ she muttered, so low only she could hear the complaint. 6

About midway down her treacherous path to the doors, she felt a tap on her left shoulder. Emily automatically knew who it was because only one person had such a delicate touch, her best friend Brooke. Spinning around quickly, she and her BFF hugged each other so tight Emily could feel the life go out of her, but she didn’t mind, she loved Brooke, no matter how strong her ‘biffie’ was. After the Dynamic Duo finished hugging, Brooke began talking, fast as always. 7

“Oh my gosh! Ems! I haven’t seen you since lunch! I missed you, girl.” Brooke said, her eyes wide as if she had just met her long-lost sister. 8

“Whoa Brooks!” Emily said, giggling like a little girl. “I missed you too! Even though lunch was like, two hours ago!”9

“Yeah true, but whatever, so… you have to tell me! What happened with Mr. Jakey today?” She was the only one who knew about Emily’s dream boyfriend. 10

“Well, he turned around and kissed me while Mr. Hamsky was giving an enormously boring lecture on the life-cycle of a toad.”11

“Ah! No way! Are you serious?! I can’t believe this!” Brooke said, her grin was so wide she could probably eat a banana sideways. 12

“No, I’m not serious! Psh, like that would ever happen to ME. It was the same as always- I just stared at him, he never even looked back.” Emily said.13

Brooke stared at her friend for a while, not saying anything. Then Emily broke the silence. “You know, Brooke, the only time Jake talked to me was when he needed a pencil. Seriously, a guy like him would never be into a girl like me. Ever.” Pain was stinging her voice as she tried to talk without unleashing a major tear fest. 14

Before Emily could say anything else, Brooke was pulling her in for yet another hug. Except this time it was soft, the kind a mother would give her daughter when her boyfriend of two years broke up with her. 15

“Oh Ems, don’t worry. He just has to get to know you. And if he still doesn’t like you, then he’s a bigger loser than I thought.” Brooke whispered into Emily’s ear, stroking away the blonde hair that was covering her best friend’s tear-filled blue eyes. 16

Laughing a little, Emily lifter her head form her friend’s shoulder. “God, I have no clue what I’d do without you Brooke!”17

“Let’s just say you wouldn’t be able to get by.” Brooke said, her voice perky once again. 18

Emily stuck out her tongue and grabbed her friend’s hand. Together they ran all the way to the glass doors. Once the girls were outside, they slowed down. Both of them lived on the same street, so they had more time to talk.19

“So Ems, we still on for ice cream at Cold Pleasures tomorrow?” Brooke asked. 20

“Yeah, let’s meet there at one, I’ll be able to sleep in that way.” Emily stated, suddenly full of energy. 21

“Okay sleepy-head! I’ll see you then!” Brooke said as she began walking towards her door.22

“love you!” Emily blew a kiss to her friend and continued walking.23

Emily lived four houses down from Brooke, so she was home soon. When she entered her house, no one was home. Her parents were still at work and her sister was probably at a friend’s. Dropping her backpack near the living room table, she went to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of orange juice. When she finished drinking, she went up to her room and began her weekend homework. By the time she finished everything, it was already 8:30. She took a quick shower and decided to hit the hay early. She dreamed of Jake that night, once again. 24


(♥) The Next Day (♥)25

Emily was sleeping peacefully when a sharp, high-pitched sound awoke her. Confused and still a bit tired, Emily opened her eyes and searched her room for the cause of the sound. It was her alarm clock, and the green numbers on it said the time was 12:30 p.m. ‘Ugh, I’m gonna be late.’ Emily muttered, resting her head on the pillow. Groaning, she hesitantly pulled off her covers and slid her feet over the side of the bed. 26

Emily pulled on her Elmo slippers and walked on over to her closet. Sliding open the mirrored door, a bunch of clothes stared back at her. Picking through some option, Emily decided on white mini-shorts and a blue and grey striped tank top. It took her ten minutes to be completely ready; perfumed and teeth brushed.27

She skipped down the stairs and kissed her mom good-bye. Then she was out the door. Cold Pleasures was only a couple of blocks away. So she would be there just in time. As Emily walked on her way to the ice cream shop, she took in all the beauty of a Saturday morning - well, afternoon. 28

She saw the shining Cold Pleasures sign and entered the shop. It was just as she had remembered from the last time she had indulged in the delicious treats at CP’s. The walls were bright red with little cartoons of different sweets. There was a long counter with two friendly looking employees behind it. Emily walked over to the ice cream display. ‘They all look so good!’ Emily thought, her craving was kicking in. 29

At the far right corner of the shop, there were circular, metallic tables with red stools surrounding them. Looking at all the customers was when she saw two, well one, familiar face. It was Jake. And he was with a girl named Charlotte, but Emily barely knew her. They were sharing a banana split and it looked like they were having a great time.30

Emily couldn’t believe it. Jake was dating someone- and the worst part was that it wasn’t her. Emily could hear the giggles coming from their direction, she tried to shut then out, but she failed. It was to much, she wanted to break down and cry. 31

“Hey Ems! What’s -” Brooke started to say. She stopped once she saw her friends hurt face. Emily’s eyes were filling with water, but she wouldn’t let them out. Brooke followed Emily’s stare, and she saw Jake with Charlotte. 32

“Oh god! Emily! I’m so sorry.” Brooke said in a low voice, hugging her friend tight. Emily broke free and ran out of the shop, tears sliding down her cheeks. Before Brooke could run after her friend, she saw someone do it for her. 33
