The Dress

A dress like this makes a woman feel powerful. A dress like this can also make a woman feel admired, desired and centre stage – perhaps this is where the power stems from. 1

Slipping it over my head, feeling the satin lining slither down my body, silky, rather like placing on a satin glove, and tentatively zipped up the back, with less difficulty than I had imagined, I looked in the mirror. 2

The dress is shaped like a heart, a heart made of coral satin. The sweet heart neckline has detailing on the bust, five folds of more sheen satin, softer to touch than the rest of the dress, the overhead harsh lighting of the changing booth making it shine. Pulled in at the waist, it makes you look like a woman. Flicking out at the waist it emphasises my curves. Yes, a dress like this makes a woman the lead in a tale of male desire.3

The colour is perfect to, not the baby pinks of the dresses of a little girl. Nor is it the bold cerise of a teen, a shocking bold colour, designed to provoke. No, this is the colour of a woman; it is light like the young girls dress, suggesting the wearer possesses their innocence. However it is dark enough to subtly tell them that the wearer, or the wearer’s body, knows the ways of the world. This combination is the mark of a true woman, she is not innocent enough to make a good wife, and nor is she too far in the opposite direction, she is too worldly and tainted to be the mistress. The wear of this dress is a woman, to be admired as a fine specimen of the species. 4

Stroking the stiffer and slightly coarse material of the outer part of the dress, I can visualise the looks I will receive overflowing with longing and entreaty, I can hear the champagne pop and slip into glass and the amorous whispers. With a wiggle of my body, making sure the dress sits perfectly; I can taste those whispers on my lips and the more satisfying taste of the champagne. I like the feel, no it is more of a taste, of being wanted, but I adore champagne more. The delightful combination of tastes, dried fruit, apple and citrus, a yeasty aftertaste, and the effect of the bubbles on ones head and, much later the legs, are much more engaging than the much rehearsed line and looks of men. The bubbles also dance much better than any man I have had the pleasure, or misfortune, of meeting. 5

I know that this dress shall help me rise above those men and their gazes, their words. This dress is even better than that champagne my tongue, and taste buds more longing than those men, can almost taste. This dress starts all of that, all that I have imagined, as a dress like this one makes a woman feel powerful. A dress like this can also make a woman feel admired, desired and centre stage in the universal opera of desire. 6

Author notes

I guess with this I have chosen to describe not only an object but the feelings and actions associated with it.
The idea just came to me – then the opening line and it all stemmed from there – its actually about a dress I have been eying up for weeks.
I hope this is suitable – please let me know if its not and I shall do some more work.

  • "silky, rather like placing on a satin glove," & "I can taste those whispers on my lips and the more satisfying taste of the champagne" were my absolute favorite lines. This was so beautifully written and very enjoyable to read. Everything about it was spectacular.

    Good Luck!
