He curved his thumbs around his rainbow suspenders, pulling them out slightly and pushing out his stomach further than it already jutted from his body. Smiling, he rested his hands against his chest and leaned down to pat the girl on her blonde, curly head. His cheekbones were like large red apples, very defined on his aged face which was riddled with creases and wrinkles, mostly from smiling so often. His half moon spectacles rested on the bridge of his nose, slightly smudged from a hard day’s work without proper cleaning. He reached up and pushed them higher with his index finger, peering down at her with a wide smile. 1

She gazed up at him with a smile of wonderment, her eyes wide and open as curiosity compelled her to speak. 2

“Hello. What’s your name?” she asked innocently, unsure but comfortable in talking to him.3

He smiled and nodded in reply.4

He was deaf.5

She tugged on his sleeve and made him lean down.6

His old bones creaked slightly as he leaned to look her in the eye.7

Somehow, she understood that he was unable to hear, so she mouthed the three simple words, “I love you.” 8

He felt a tear caress his dry eye, as he mouthed back, “I love you too.”9

She had never met him before, never laid eyes on him in her life, and he’d never spoken to her, but this act of kindness changed both of their lives forever. 10

In that moment, that instant…They were both appreciated and happy with each others’ appreciation. They felt a love neither had felt before, a love that takes the place of loneliness. 11
