Harper Ann

In a hospital, a woman lay crying in a bed. Her husband had left the room in a daze. It was just too much for him to handle. It was this couple's 6th try for a baby, and all the others had died. 1

Except this one. Lucy Lane was crying tears of joy for the first time in this cold, dark hospital, because she found out her new baby girl's heart was beating, unlike all 5 others. JoJo Lane, Lucy's husband, had stepped outside and was calling everyone he knew.2

"Baby Harper Ann's heart is beating! It's a miracle!"3

6 months later, Harper Ann came out, and instead of crying when she came out, she appeared to be laughing. Lucy and JoJo were crying tears of joy as their perfect baby was taken into another room for her first few minutes of life.4

But as Lucy and JoJo were talking and crying, a doctor came in with a frown on his face. Lucy looked up, but she was too scared to say a word.5

"What is it, sir?" JoJo finally said.6

"It's your baby, Mr.Lane. S-She..well..we found out she has down syndrome. We're very sorry."7

The room fell silent as if God was mortified himself.8

Lucy's eyes shut, but no tears came out. JoJo looked away, then back at his wife.9

"At least she's alive...." Lucy said.10

"H-How...could you not see it in the pictures from her womb?"11

said JoJo, almost panicking.12

"We just didn't catch it, were sorry. Do you want to see your baby?"13

Lucy looked up and opened her brown eyes.14

"Why wouldn't I?"15

The doctor nodded and went into another room, and a few moments later, the baby was brought in, the little pink blanket squirming.16

Lucy reached out for her baby, tears in her eyes.17

She looked deep into Harper, as if there was a normal child underneath all her. Harper's nose was flat on the tip, and there were white spots in her eye. Her face was round, and her skin was pale. She was blonde, but both JoJo and Lucy had brown hair. 18

Lucy smiled.19

"She's beautiful."

Ohh, I really like this story. I think that it's ironic, yet true that all parents will think that they have beautiful children no matter how they look like, and this story portrayed that really well. (: "The room fell silent as if God was mortified himself." - I think that this was a really powerful description of the silence!

    Great job, thanks for entering!

The emotion in this is raw and really just great. I love the ending, and how the parents are happy even though the child has Down Syndrome.

You had a couple spelling errors, but they weren't too bad. The emotions from the parents seem a little forced, though. Try showing the reader how they feel instead of just TELLING us.

Great job though and keep writing!!
