A Night in October (Part 3)

Later that night, she and Joseph sat comfortably on his black corduroy couch, talking calmly of recent movies they had seen. She now wore a large red t-shirt, and a pair of boxers decorated with small shapes that Joseph lent her. She absently raked her fingers through her freshly washed hair, and when she pulled her hand back in front of her, she found bits of hair in her fingers. Giggling, she shook the hair off her fingers and boredly watched it fall.1

“So how long have you lived here?” Ari asked, “I mean you look like you’ve lived here for ages!” Her eyes fell on an old grandfather clock, noticing the layer of dust coating the clock. Joseph glanced at the clock as well and shrugged.2

“Bout eight years, I believe” he stated, “It needs a good cleaning though.”  He laughed. 3

She nodded slowly as she scanned the room. Then a thought occurred to her…Now that I think about it, everything is too dusty…She noted the grandfather clock and how it hadn’t ticked once since she arrived, and the armchair, though it held a dent in the seat, was layered in dust, left untouched. It had to have been years since he’s been here…4

“I’m...going to the restroom…” she stated bluntly. Feeling sick, she rose from the couch and wandered down the hallway of the house to the restroom. “I can’t believe this…” she whispered to herself, “I finally meet a nice guy, and he’s…. one of them…” She sighed and walked into the bathroom, locking the door behind her. “I’ve got to get out of here.” After a minute, she opened the window and climbed out, at a loss for what to do next…5
