Chapter 1 - The Key1

My name is Mitsuko Kiyoshi. I am one of the last demons in a world full of vampire, werewolves, and humans. Disgusting things they are. Blood sucking ones, mutts, and destroyers. Boy this world is doomed. 2

However though I’m not your ordinary demon. I am a fire timber wolf demon with wings, and the only survivor to the slaying of my clan. The Kiyoshi clan. A highly feared and respected clan, and one of the last demon clans to be slaughtered.3

So my story begins in a test lab. Why? Because I am the key. The key to save the world.4

“LET ME OUT OF HERE!!” I shouted at the top of my lungs rattling my cage some “I WANT OUT!!!”6

I wore a red tank top and black cargos. I had blond hair with red highlights put into a clip, bright green eyes, two black ears, a black tail, fangs, and claws.7

“Be quiet you useless piece of crap!” The guy called, Arty, said hitting my cage with a broom 8

Arty wore a skin tight black shirt and blue jeans. He had black hair and red eyes. The red eyes were common for vampires so you could easily spot one like him.9

“WHY DONTCHA MAKE ME!!!” I shouted at him baring my fangs10

“I think I will!” Arty said walking over to the cage and unlocked it11

When that cage door was unlocked I kicked it with both of my feet causing it to hit Arty. Arty staggered back as I threw myself out of the cage. When he realized I was out he cursed and lunged at me. I ducked down low and did a sweep with my leg. I caused Arty to fall down to the floor with a loud BAM!12

‘Crap! I bet everyone heard that!’ I thought as I picked up my weapons 13

A huge sword crafted by demons and a silver scythe on a long silver chain. I grabbed a black back stuffing more weapons that I might need and tossed it over my back. I quickly rapped the scythe’s chain around my pants legs and waist. I tucked the scythe into the chain behind my back.14

I began looking for the closest exit. There were no windows in the room which meant I was probably underground or in a solitary room. I took my chances with the solitary room and aimed one of my fireballs at the wall. The fireball made a hole in the wall which led to a hall way. I shot through the hole and ran quickly down the halls. I could smell those foul creatures already running around wondering what happened.15

‘Idiots!’ I thought as I seen a window ‘Perfect! I can stretch my wings after being cramped up for so long!’16

I ran all the way to the window and didn’t stop. I crashed through the widow and opened my wings. They were black as night and 15ft long. I dropped a good 20ft before I began flapping to get higher up into the air. Then I just rode a stream of air rarely flapping.17

I was finally free of that place…or so I thought. I suddenly smelt vampires on my trail. All vampires have wings. They were like leather and easily sliced open. I picked up my pace knowing they would use their bats echo location to find me. I needed to think of a way out of here and fast.18

I looked down below me and see what kind of landscape I was dealing with.19

‘Trees, Trees, mountains, hills and river with a waterfall. Hello a river is perfect!’ I thought to my self and tucked my wings in some20

I shot down toward the river, my speed increasing as I dropped lower. Suddenly I felt cold water surround me. I was pushed along with the river to the waterfall. I broke the waters surface gasping for air that my lungs desperately needed. I looked up in the sky and seen a bunch of vampires hanging in the air. I would of laughed if I wouldn’t of choked on water. 21

I turned back toward the water fall. I didn’t think my plan all the way through when I dived down into the river. I began to panic and bob up and down in the water trying to stay up but the under tow was to strong and pulled me under. Next thing I knew I was falling down a waterfall screaming bloody murder.22

I felt cold water surround me and a sharp pain in my shoulder. The water around me began to turn red. My lungs was killing me and I fought to get to the surface. Suddenly I knew I wasn’t going to be able to and began to lose consciousness. Then I felt something grab me and pull me up. After that I blacked out all the way.23

After a while of being out cold I slowly began to wake up hearing voices.24

“Is she alive? She’s been out cold for three days mom!” A males voice said monotone25

“Hush up Masahiro! You can see her chest moving up and down can’tcha?” A female voice replied “It means she’s still alive!”26

“Hn.” the guy called Masahiro said sounding annoyed27

I let out a low moan feeling the pain in my shoulder as it hit me like a ton of bricks. Boy did that hurt. I’m sure I’ll be feeling that mark for quite some time.28

“See! She’s waking up Masahiro!” The female said again and I felt her by me29

I suddenly sat up in the bed looking around wildly. I was in someone else’s home. In SOME ELSE’S bed. I looked at them probably with a scared expression the way their expressions was.30

The female was small and petite looking. She had short dirty blond hair and honey colored eyes. She wore a dark blue t-shirt and loose looking pants.31

The boy was tall and muscularly built. He also had short dirty blond hair and honey colored eyes. He wore a long red sleeve shirt with a short black sleeve shirt over it and black cargos.32

“Wh-where am I?” I asked shakily after finding my voice and gaining my senses back “W-what happened? Wh-who are y-you people?”33

“Shhh calm down sweetie we’ll tell you everything we know. I am Koko Kurosu and this is my son, Masahiro Kurosu. Right now you are at our house for the time being.” Koko said and let it sink in before she spoke again “My son saw you being chased by vampires and then he saw you dive down into the river to get away from them. Then you went over the waterfall and nearly drowned until he pulled you out.”34

I slowly nodded taking all the information in.35

“Tell us sweetie who are you and what demon clan are you from?” Koko asked softly36

I looked at her and blinked a few times.37

“I’m M-Mitsuko Ki-kiyoshi…” I said before I was interrupted38

“The Kiyoshi clan?! Oh my! You poor girl! Your one of the last purebred demons then! Oh my my my!” Koko said softly “Your clan was also the last one to fall to the Demon slayers! Oh you must feel lonely!”39

“Not really…I was always a lone wolf even in my clan. The….odd one out you can say.” I said shrugging lightly40

Yes my clans death had effected me making me colder but it also made me stronger. It made me able to survive in this world that was being taken over by vampires, werewolves, and humans. 41

“You poor girl!” Koko said softly with sad eyes “Your welcome to stay here as long as you want Mitsuko!”42

“Thank you.” I said pausing for a minute as I felt my shoulder pulse with pain “I think I may have to. At least until my shoulder heals.”43

“Its not only your shoulder that got hurt. Your left wing also hit the rocks so its gonna be sore to.” Masahiro said finally speaking “You might have to stay here longer then you think.”44

I looked at him blankly. He was right. I could feel a dull pain in my wing but my shoulder hurt more. I guessed I skimmed my wing on the rocks while I hit my shoulder. That was why the water was a slight red. I wasn’t gonna let it stop me though.45

“It’ll be fine. I don’t need to fly anyway.” I simply said looking at Masahiro “I’ll just run until its good enough for me to fly on.”46

I noticed the highlights in their hair. Black. It meant they were purebreds but in what I didn’t know. All purebreds have highlights in their hair, and depending on which clan your from, the brighter the highlights the more powerful you are. 47

My highlights were a bloody red color and stood out meaning I was from a highly powerful clan. Their highlights also stood out meaning their clan was also very powerful.48

“Your not gonna get far with your shoulder and wing in bad shape girl.” Masahiro said “Your might just wanna take mom up on her offer.”49

I stared at him. How dare he call me “girl”! I was outraged and appalled. In fact I was ready to rip his throat out and disembowel him right then and there. I held back though because he had save my life. So I changed the subject.50

“What race are ya’ll? You never told me.” I said looking at Koko51

“We’re vampires sweetie.” Koko said softly as if making sure I wasn’t gonna jump up and run from hearing that “And as you can tell by our highlights, we’re purebred vampires.”52

I looked at their eyes a little confused. Vampires were supposed to have red eyes. They all are but they didn’t and that confused me more.53

“W-why aren’t your eyes red like the others?” I asked confused as I stared at their eyes54

“Well…we’re not like other vampires sweetie.” Koko said “Instead of human or demon blood, we drink animal blood. It keeps our eyes a honey color rather then red. It helps us blend in with humans.”55

I looked at them and slowly nodded understanding what they meant.56

“You might want to pull your mouth up there girl.” Masahiro said smirking at me “A poor innocent bug might fly in and you swallow it.”57

“My name is Mitsuko! Is that so hard for you to say?” I asked angrily as I glared at him “Say it with me Mit-su-ko!”58

“Alright Mit-su-ko.” He said and smirked more as he mocked me59

I growled low at him baring my fangs. He bared his back in return and hissed at me. He reminded me of cat demon. Now I really wanted to rip his throat out but before I could move Koko intervened.60

“Masahiro quit making fun of her! She just lost her clan, got captured and probably tortured, escaped only to dive into water, and hurt her wing and shoulder.” Koko said “Cut her some slack and show some kindness.”61

He scoffed and I stood up even as my shoulder and wing protested. I also realized I was wearing someone else’s clothes. They were way to big for me. The camo cargo’s dragged on the floor and the black shirt reached my knees. I stumbled over the pants some but Masahiro caught me gently and steady me.62

“Thanks.” I said bitterly as he let go of me “Who’s clothes am I wearing?”63

Masahiro stiffened some and a light pink color appeared on his cheeks. I smirked to my self but suddenly frowned when I realized why he was blushing. I was wearing HIS clothes. I guess because I didn’t fit Koko’s clothes or something.64

“I guess you’d want to change now. Yours were torn up so I changed you into my sons. Tell me what kind of clothes you wear.” Koko said softly65

“Um…black cargos and a red tank top.” I said66

“Masahiro go get her one of your cargos to wear.” Koko said and Masahiro walked off to get the cargos “Mitsuko come with me. I don’t have a red tank top but I do have something else you may like to wear.”67

Koko stood up and walked to her room. I silently followed her. She opened her closet and I waited patently. When she turned around she held a red short sleeve hoodie. She tossed it to me when Masahiro came back and handed me the black cargos. I went in the bathroom and changed quickly. When I walked out Koko smiled at me and Masahiro just looked at me.68

Masahiro’s cargos fit in length but not in the waist. I had used a black studded belt to keep them up. The hoodie fit perfectly but the only problem was that it stopped below my chest a little ways and showed my stomach to the world.69

“T-thanks.” I said softly and noticed Masahiro look away70

“Come on! I’ll help you cut slits into the back of the shirt for your wings.” Koko said and grabbed some scissors71

I turned around for her. She traced my wings lightly with her fingers before she made to slits. I pushed my wings through and they slid perfectly through the slits. The slits weren’t loose or tight but they fit snuggly. 72

“Why do you have wings?” Masahiro suddenly asked “I mean demons normally don’t have wings like you do.”73

“Yea well demons aren’t normally cursed like me neither.” I stated simply 74

“What do you mean?” Koko asked softly as if afraid to75

“Well, my clan was cursed for as long as time I guess. There’s two curses. A light curse and a dark curse.” I started softly looking at my own reflection in the mirror “Within our clan two purebreds are chosen to hold the power of light and darkness. I was one of them so my name means light. However, my brother, Yami, is the holder of darkness and so his name means dark.”76

Everyone was quiet while I closed my eyes remembering the curse my brother held.77

“The curses says that the darkness will fully take over it’s holder and corrupt them. The only one that can stop him is the light. To break the curses has never been done even though the curse says it can happen.” I said78

“What is the whole curse?” Masahiro asked softly79

I looked at him and took a deep breath as I repeated the curse as my parents had so many before when I was young.80

From darkness hope is born81

From hope comes light82

Both equal opponents in the battle field83

But only one will survive84

They will battle back and forth85

Causing pain to the ones they love86

Until darkness takes over and leaves87

The light must follow and hunt it down88

Only to be smite down and on the brink of death89

Only when a life is lost by free will90

To protect the one it loves91

Only then can the madness end92

And order finally restored93

I grew quiet never having told anyone outside of my clan about the curses.94

“Wow!” Koko said in a whisper95

“Yea that’s the main one. There is a light curse and darkness curse that is another link to that one. However you cant read them.” I said softly “Both of them lost in an ancient language.”96

“Really? Is it like on paper?” Koko asked and I shook my head some “Then what is it on?”97

“Me.” I whispered and turned to look at her “The light curse is on me and the darkness curse is on my brother.”98

On my right arm black letters in another language appeared. The marks extended down my back to. I seen Koko gasp lightly as she seen them.99

“That’s the language of the elder wolves over a thousand years ago. They went to to hiding when all this nonsense broke out between our races.” Koko said100

“So there’s a chance I can find them and ask them to translate?” I asked somewhat hopeful101

“Yes there is but the journey is a tough one.” Koko said “It is one you must take the utmost care in. For if you are what I think you are then you are our last hope.”102

“Mom what are you talking about?” Masahiro asked confused103

Before Koko could say anything there was a loud crashing sound followed by an explosion. Koko turned to us with a worried expression.104

“There here for you! You must run away from here!” Koko said handing Masahiro my weapons and my black bag “Masahiro I want you to go with her and help her in anyway you can. Protect her for she is the worlds last hope for a chance to survive!”105

She scooped some more things into another bag. I seen a map, cloaks, and a envelope. She handed the bag to me because it was lighter and I could carry it.106

“Masahiro take the underground tunnel back to the river. Then follow the river down to the first town you come to. Ask around for a guy named Zero and ask him to help you. Tell him Koko sent you!” Koko said quickly pushing us to the closet were a trap door was “Go and I’ll hold them off as long as I can!”107

“Mom come with us!” Masahiro pleaded as Koko kissed his forehead108

“I love you Masahiro!” Koko said and gave us one last push closing the trap door behind us with a soft thud109

“MOM!!” Masahiro shouted banging on the trap door110

I stared helplessly at him and remembered when my mom did the same thing. I grabbed his hand and pulled him behind me as I ran down the tunnel. I felt him pull me back and I fell into his chest.111

“I’m not leaving my mother!” Masahiro hissed at me his eyes glowing red with built up power112

“Listen Masahiro! She is giving you a chance to live like my mother gave me! I know its hard to leave her but it is her choice! Do you want to waist it?” I asked him and watched him shake his head “Then come on and honor your mothers last whishes!”113

We continued to running down the long tunnel. I was following the smell of water with my nose. We came to a fork in the tunnel and then he led grabbing my hand. After what seemed like forever we hit a dead end.114

“Great! There’s a boulder in the way!” Masahiro shouted angrily and pushed up against it115

The boulder didn’t budge and I knew I couldn’t lift it with my wing and shoulder hurt. It was time for plan B. Time to use my clans power to help us out.116

My eyes glowed red as I started to build up my power. The highlights in my hair also grew brighter the more I focused on the boulder.117

‘Move!’ I commanded the boulder in my head as my hands glowed red118

The boulder glowed red and slowly began to move. I pushed my hands forward and the boulder went flying 50ft in the air and landed with a loud BAM! I staggered slightly to the side. I haven’t fully mastered my powers and it took a lot to keep it in control. Although I lost it at the end and the boulder went flying as the result.119

“Dang can you make any more noise to tell them where we’re at?” Masahiro asked annoyed120

“S-sorry but I lost control o-over it the last s-second!” I said breathing hard as my shoulder and wing protested to the activity I had done121

He looked at me with a weird expression.122

“You haven’t mastered you clans powers yet have you?” He asked slowly123

“I’ve mastered my fire abilities and that’s about it really.” I said and scratched the back of my head some “It takes years to master my whole clans power.”124

He sighed and shook his head slowly. He picked up my sword and strapped it across his back. I was surprised he could carry it at all really. Then he put my scythe into my bag and tossed it over one of his shoulders.125

“Now come on! We need to follow the river to the first town!” Masahiro said and began following the river down stream at a running pace126

I silently followed him keeping my pain to myself.127
