by Carol Batten & Andy Stephenson2
He crawled into bed,
Turned to his wife(me), and said
"Honey, there is something I'd like to say.
I don't want to bother you,
I know you have problems, too,
But it's not the life I promised you today.3
Although you may not understand,
It's the dream of every man
Just once to hold the key and succeed.
To feel the power of success,
To be above all the rest,
I know it seems crazy, but it's something I'll always need.4
Susan(insert your name), money's something I need
And it's not out of greed.
I know just how selfish that may seem.
I'd like to buy you rings
And so many different things,
But I know I'm only dreamin'
Every man's dream5
I took you as my wife
And I swore you'd live a good life
And I've worked hard to be my own man.
But take a look at our home,
I can hardly afford a phone
And look at the ring you wear upon your hand.6
I told myself that we'd be rich
And I'd never dig another ditch
And I promised myself, I'd never let you down.
But when I think I'm getting higher,
I just make myself a liar,
And it makes my pride fall back to the ground.7
Susan(insert your name), money's something I need
And it's not out of greed.
I know just how selfish that may seem.
I'd like to buy you rings
And so many different things,
But I know I'm only dreamin'
Every man's dream8
I know the children are asleep.
We have secret's we must keep.
You know I never want to worry them.
Frustration, anger trouble me
And sometimes this you see,
But you know I'm not the kind who will give in.9
Susan(insert your name), money's something I need
And it's not out of greed.
I know just how selfish that may seem.
I'd like to buy you rings
And so many different things,
But I know I'm only dreamin'
Every man's dream."10
Then she(I) said,
"Stop! Take a look around you.
I've loved you since the day I found you.
I won't quit, 'cause I am rich
In many different ways.
I didn't marry a millionaire
And though there ain't much money here,
Don't know that I'd like it,
Anyway."11
Author notes
This is a song, but I added a new verse to it. It now has five verses. I tried to personalize it for you. I won't be able to record it with the new verse by father's day, but if you would like to hear it with the original four verses, I can email it to you. Actually, I may be able to record it by father's day, but not by the close of the contest.
If you would like to add a picture to this song, you can email one to me, and I'll post it on the page.

Thanks for hosting this contest and for reading, commenting, and applauding. I appreciate it. You are very welcome. If there was more time, I might have been able to have written an entirely fresh song specifically for you. However, I tried to mold this one to fit. I really like this song, I'm glad you do as well.
