Sky - ending 1 (not complete)

I grabbed onto the pipe with all of my stength but it wasn't enough unfortunately. I closed my eyes and hoped for the best as I awaited the end of my short lived life of 15 years. I waited and waited but I never fell. I slowly opened my eyes to see the sky, but I wasn't falling any more!

Did I keep the same tense (like past tense) througout?
