the story takes place in a small australian valley town in summer .
Micki Jones, Susanna Elliot and Vicky Tenney are three ordinary teenage girls with different interests, different tastes and different opinions. They have only three things that bind them to one another - their love for each other, their passion for music, and the countless summers they have spent together.
Micki's brother Michael, has been missing since a year. Although the media said that he had shot himself and most people belive he is dead, Micki never bellived the stories, and clings to a hope that he is still alive. she has changed slightly since the disappearance.
susanna's father works for a top secret branch of the australian government. he probed into what he was working for, and his findings resulted in an attempt on his life, around the same time that michael disappeared.
vicky had a boyfriend called jacob, but she broke up with him a while back. she wnts to get back together with him, but no one has seen or heard of him since over a year. he was michael's best friend.
The story starts when Micki finds an article in an old newspaper about a rumour that there is an abandoned mine down in Pearson's field. She wants to go to the field and explore a bit, thinking there might be some gold somewhere. She tries to convince Susanna and Vicky to take her idea seriously, but fails.
One day, Susanna humours Micki and they mess around in Pearson's field, but instead of finding gold, a strange man approaches them and scares them. Susanna recognises him as someone who her father worked for. In their nervousness, Micki and Sue make up false names. Susanna introduces Micki as Vicky. 32

The mine in Pearson's field was actually a lab for weapons testing of the secret organisation that Mr. Elliot works for. no one was supposed to know about it. The men decide to get rid of the two girls. However, a different man is given the job, and he kidnaps the wrong kid - Vicky. Some members also come to Susanna's house, but her recognises them. he tells sue to hide and he makes a run for it.
The next morning, when Mr. Eliot isn't home, Susanna discovers Vicky is gone. She also finds Micki missing.
Micki has decided to go back to the field, look for the mine, and get to the bottom of the mystery.
Susanna chases after Micki, but the girls end up both not seeing the entrance to the mine and falling in.
In the mine, they find Vicky and they also find evidence, including Michael's diary, showing that Michael and jacob had actually foiled the assanitation of Mr. Elliot, which is why they were left to die in the mine. Micki and Vicky also learn that Michael was in love with Susanna, which is why he did it.
The girls face a tough emotional situation, but they manage to get out (havent worked that bit out yet), foil the organisation, and become closer to each other.
