Second section: A sample scene (100 - 400 words)19
Camille walked into Pitre’s Market to pick up a few things. Her sister Emmeline made the list and told her not to pick up anything other than what was on the list. Just for that Camille decided she would be the one to decide what was needed. Camille bought the butter, eggs, bread and milk that were on the list and left out celery and peaches. She would tell Emmeline they were all out. Now she would have enough to buy the new Vogue magazine.20
Camille skimmed through the magazine while waiting to be checked out. Judah Brutus was on duty that day. People said Judah was a little slow in the head, but Mr. Pitre thought he did just fine as a clerk. When it was Camille’s turn to check out, she showed the Vogue magazine to Judah. “Tell me Judah which one of these lipsticks would look best when I go to New York? Do you like the cherry red or the deep red?”21
“Miz Camille you would look pretty in either of those colors. When are you going to New York?”22
“One day Judah. One day I will go to New York. You just wait and see. When I do, I think I’ll buy the cherry red lipstick.”23
Judah nodded as he finished checking Camille out. “You have a nice day and have a good time in New York with your cherry red lips.”24
Camille smiled, as she put the groceries in the wooden cart and started to walk home up the dusty dirt road to her house. 25

Thank you for entering the contest 'Novels - Your Character' - I hope the contest has helped you understand your character better.

Camille appears to be a well-rounded character. From the chapter, I could see how she interacted with her family, as well as her love for enjoying herself even though the era she is set in must have been rather depressing.
