Dead or Alive: Makes No Difference-Ch. 9

“Who was that, Milo?” Caitlyn asked while Milo stitched up the small cut she’d received when she’d been pushed to the ground. She’d noticed that he was quieter than usual, lost in thought it seemed. He’d been that way since they’d made their way to an empty exam room, where he was now treating her. Thankfully no one had really seen them and asked any questions.1

“I told you, no one.” He answered without really looking at her. She winced slightly as he rubbed the cut with alcohol.2

“I think it was someone, because you two seemed to know each other.” Instead of replying he finished up the stitch and then stepped away. He refused to look at her as he paced the small area of the room.3

“Milo.” She said firmly. He stopped pacing, but still didn’t look at her. Looking at a random spot on the wall, he spoke.4

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”5

“Just tell me.” He took a hard swallow and let out a breath before turning and looking at her.6

“He was my brother.”7

“The one who died twelve years ago?” she asked with a raised eyebrow8

“Yeah, that one.” He replied, shifting his gaze slightly.9

“Milo, that’s not possible. You sure you didn’t hit your head or something?”10

“Caitlyn, I know this sounds crazy, believe me I have a hard time believing it myself, but I know my brother, it doesn’t matter if it’s been twelve years.”11

“So you’re saying that he faked the entire thing, death and all?”12

“Yeah, so it seems. Something ‘bout needing to get a new start.” He said, not sure what to make of that one. 13

“Why’d he come back then?”14

“Beats me. That man in there wasn’t the guy I knew as a kid. The guy I knew lit up the room, just by being in it. I trusted him with everything. I gave up my life when he became sick. Little did I know was that he wasn’t really sick.” Milo said, pacing the room again. Bitterness grew with each word he spoke. He ran a weary hand through his hair and then dropped it angrily to his side.15

“Milo, what are we gonna do with his body and with Luke and Jess’s body?” she asked after a minute. Tears came to her eyes at the thought of Jess and Luke, but she quickly wiped them away.16

“I don’t know, alright, I don’t know. What do you think we should do? I can’t always be making this decisions.” He said with exasperation. He brought his hands down on the tray of medical utensils, startling Caitlyn a bit. He was tired and all he wanted was for this whole thing to be over.17

“We’ll call the police, because Luke and Jess just can’t be buried and forgotten, they’ve got families.” She said. Milo looked over at her, his brown eyes captures her blue ones. Letting out a sigh he looked away and stood straight up.18

“Ok, we’ll call them and just go along with what I say.”19

“Alright. But Milo.”20

“Yeah?”21

“Why did he kill them, why did he kill Jess and Luke?” she asked, searching his eyes, the tears in her own giving them a glistening shine. Letting out a breath, Milo found a chair and basically collapsed into it. He looked up at her and shook his head.22

“I don’t know, probably just because he could.”23
