Lovely Girls (prt 1) College Life

Sitting at the table by the window, headphones plugged in, sipping coffee every few minutes, reading the latest blogs, and she walks by. She doesn’t notice my eyes move along her slender body as she glides through the café. Twenty minutes until I have to go back to class. Since this is the campus café, its not even two blocks away. I take out the left headphone from my ear and move my eyes back to my computer so she doesn’t think I’m spying on her. People start to get up and gather their books. 1

Drinking the last of my coffee she walks over. “Would you like more ma’am?” I act like I don’t hear her, just so she’ll ask again, “Ma’am, would you like more?” She speaks a little louder. This time I listen to her and take out my other headphone.2

“No thank you, I have to go back to class in a few minutes.” I smile at her, and she smiles back. Her smile is so perfect. I get lost in her smile and start to blush, but then I realized I needed to ask her about the sign in the window. “Oh, Rachael, I was wondering if you guys are still hiring.”3

The smile never fades away from her face. “Yes, actually we are hiring. Wait right here and I can go search for an application real quick.” Rachael quickly walks back behind the counter to retrieve an application. When she hands me the application our hands lightly touch, which makes both of us smile. “I’ll be sure to put in a good word.” I tell her thank you and gather my books quickly.4

After class, I head back to my dorm to dish with my roommate, Denise. She knows my liking of girls, but doesn’t have a problem because her younger sister is gay. “Oh my God, Denise!” I speak as soon as I shut the door. Denise was lying on her stomach doing homework on her bed. As soon as I said those words, she shot up and started paying attention.5

“Spill,” she bugs me. 6

“She’s so perfect,” I gasp out, still smiling. I pull out the application from my notebook. “I filled it out during class. I was too hyped up about speaking to her to pay attention.” Denise laughs and lets me finish talking. “Okay, if I work with her, I get to spend more time with her, right?” She nods to show her approval and to show me she’s paying attention. “I love this life!” I quietly scream and I fall down onto my bed. I hear Denise laugh at me then get back on her bed to do homework. 7

“When are you going to turn the application in before someone else does?” My head shoots up.8

“Shit!” I grab the application, my jacket, and keys. “Be right back,” I laugh out. Rushing to the café, I see Rachael heading out the door. Running up to her I holler out her name, “Rachael!” She stops in a her tracks and I can see her smile brighten.9

“Hey, what are you doing here; you don’t ever come back after school.” She knows my routine? I shake away the thought and smile.”10

“I’m here to turn the application in.” We smile at each other. “I really want this job.” She takes the application and slips it into her messenger backpack. A confused look overtakes my smile.11

“I’m the shift manager; I’m the one who decides who works here.” There’s that smile again. Every time she smiles, I get those feelings in the pit of my stomach. “When can you start?” I think the butterflies multiplied.12

“Tomorrow after my afternoon class,” I finally get out, “if that’s okay with you.” She nods and walks over to where the “Now Hiring” sign is. Rachael tears the sign down with pride. “You won’t even want to put that sign back up.” 13

“Let’s hope so.” Her hand stretches out and I grab it to shake. “Welcome to job Micky.” Our hands finally separate. “Well I have to get back to my house, little girl to take care of.” Wow, that took me off guard. There goes that confused face again. “Yes, I have a little three year old. She’s so beautiful.” The smile comes back.14

“I thought you were really young. How old are you,” I kind of laugh out of my mouth.15

“I’m only 22, and yes I have a little girl. Although I’m the manager, I still find time to go to school.” It’s like she’s got her life planned out. “Well, I don’t wanna pay the babysitter more than I have to,” she giggles then walks off. “Bye, Micky. See you tomorrow.” She waves good-bye and I walk back to my dorm. 16
