“Genetic Engineering is the Fourth Scientific Revolution of the World,” My Biology teacher mentioned one day in class during a lecture on Human Genetics, “We’ve come from learning how to create fire, to self-evolution. What astounding advancements we’ve made as human beings, don’t you think?”1
To be completely honest, I think we’ve not come very far at all. Scientists are talking about Human Genetic-engineering and how much they can change in a person’s appearance before they’re even born. Geneticists are talking about creating super-human races in the far future, throwing all advancements we’ve made in tolerance and accepting each other’s unchangeable differences out the window. If Human Genetic-Engineering comes about full-swing, I fear the consequences of our Scientific Leaders’ actions. Who knows, it could be “Heil Hitler” all over again, and nobody wants that.2
Before I go on, let me say that I am not just talking about Genetic-Engineering. I’m also talking about Stem-Cell Research and Human Cloning. Stem-Cell Research is the process of taking a human embryo to derive Stem Cells from for genetic research and advancement. Stem cells are cells which can adapt to become any type of cell needed, whether it be heart, lung, tendon, or bone. While the scientists do this, though, they are taking the chance of life away from a pre-conceived embryo. According to my beliefs, when a sperm hits an egg, the resulting blastocyst has a spirit, and therefore has the will to live, as all humans do.3
According to my belief, Geneticists are murdering an entire generation of humans. It’s genocide gone under the radar, I swear.4
Now for cloning: Therapeutic cloning is also the killing of a blastocyst (the name given to the sperm and egg after five days of cell-division) in order to derive stem cells from so that they can be researched. There is also DNA cloning, where the DNA of a cell is sucked out and the DNA of a different person can be put in the empty cell for growth. The third type of cloning is called Reproductive Cloning, and probably the most famous research for this has taken place in Scotland, where a sheep was cloned and birthed by another sheep. Later they named her Dolly. Dolly suffered from Lung Cancer and Arthritis, and was put to sleep. Personally, I don’t condone cloning at all because it still involves the murder of a human being.5
Just because we cannot see the little humans we are killing does not mean they are not important.6
Now, of course someone could come up to me and say, “Well, you’ve never had a dying Grandma/Uncle/Sister/Father! You don’t know what an opportunity it is to be able to save them by using Stem-cell research! You would want to save them, wouldn’t you!?”7
Yes, I would want to save them. I would want to murder all the unborn humans in the World if it meant saving someone I loved; but I wouldn’t do it. No matter what, murder is murder and it’s against the law, and against my religion (and against all of my ethical standard, morals…and I would feel really guilty). You wouldn’t murder your uncle to save your aunt, would you? You save one person, but another dies anyway. That’s how Stem-cell research and human cloning work. You save one person, but another dies in the process. It’s horrible.8
In conclusion, I would like to say this: If our culture comes to the point where human cloning, stem-cell research, and genetic engineering are a common practice, the world will be a worse place than it is today. Self-worth will be questioned, suicide rates will go up, murder rates will go up. Racism will sky-rocket when a “super-human” race is created. Hate crimes will be more frequent. Lives will be prolonged, and the grievance process will be much harder to go through when people die that were loved because death will be something that is avoided, skirted around, not accepted. Crime rates will rise. Self-Acceptance will be a thing of the past. If you do not like who you are, you just change yourself. The future generations will be superficial, unsophisticated and Philosophy will be gone. Lines will be crossed, and before long, the entire culture will self-destruct, and by the time that the people realize what they’re doing is horribly warped, it will be too late.9
Unless, of course, we act now to prevent this grim future. Those of us who care about people, who want to see the nations flourish and not spiral downward into self-destruction, are going to have to step-out and stand up for what’s right. If we want a brighter future, we are going to have to roll our sleeves up and work for it, because nobody else is going to do it for us.
