I'm a registered independent and I sometimes vote for Republicans as well as Democrats. However, the current administration has done so much damage to the economy and also created an unnecessary war in Iraq that I would hate to see it continue. John McCain promises to continue the existing policies which are not working. 2
Prices are rising at an alarming rate and someone has to pay the piper. Unemployment is increasing. Education is underfunded and fewer Americans have health insurance.3
Bush lied to get us into an illegal war in Iraq. He claimed that there were weapons of mass destruction, the United Nations asked him to allow them to inspect. Bush refused and there proved to be no WMD's. Bush claimed that Saddam was a god awful human being, and he may have been, but he was the law of the land and invading his country was a violation of international law. We were bringing them freedom and democracy according to Bush, but what we have done is very nearly destroyed their infrastructure and placed them under martial law. That is not freedom.4
Bush has made a mess of Iraq. Many people have died. More terrorists are being created as a result of our presence in Iraq.5
Bush bribed his way into office with the promise of a tax rebate. Now he is trying to get McCain elected by bribing the American people with another rebate. Somebody has to pay for that rebate. It will be the taxpayer, we need to use some common sense. Prices are skyrocketing and taxes by necessity will go up for most of us. America is in terrible debt and most Americans are also in individual debt.6
Obama doesn't seem reliable.7
Ralph Nader will only take away votes from the Democratic and Republican candidates.8
A friend of mine made an interesting assessment; he said that Obama can't beat McCain because he is too young and black. 9
For the Democrats or the Republicans to win the November election, I think it is going to rely greatly on the vice presidential candidates.10
Who do I prefer? John Edwards, but he has been eliminated as a presidential candidate. Obama is more of an unknown to me, however; I'll support Obama rather than more of the same, McCain. 11

You have written a great essay, but there are some things that I feel I need to share being the sister of a wounded soldier. The first being that don't believe everything the media tells you. They're going to tell you all about the death and terrorism and play it up really well. They aren't going to tell you about the schools the soldiers and others are building. They aren't going to tell you that the whole year and a half my brother spent doing citizen protection (that's right, his mission was to PROTECT Iraqi citizens) south of Baghdad, only three died. A year and a half. Three died. Three. And I do believe that includes the soldier that died in the blast that took my brother's leg. And what has America done since he's been home? People spit at him, tell him to go to hell, and tell him that he got what was coming. I wish more support for our troops would arise instead of focusing on the fact that we made a mistake. Yes we made a HUGE mistake, but that doesn't mean that our soldiers deserve to be punished for it. It's easier for them to do their jobs when they are being supported.
Secondly, gas prices have doubled since the democrats took control of congress. This is not to say that I think the republicans are amazing and god like...heck no.
I've already noticed Obama go back on one promise...and I am scared to think of what all he'll go back on if he gets into office. I mean...say what you mean and mean what you say. Great speeches with beautiful ideas and rhetoric only count if you actually live them out.
The person I would have liked to see become president is out of the running as well.
All I want is for whoever gets elected to actually make good on their promises and admit when they make mistakes. I think America needs an honest man/woman. Not a Politician.
(sorry about my rant...but you really did make some good points and I hope you win the contest!) -Liz

Thanks Liz,
I think the gas prices rising are a result of the war in Iraq.
I'm sorry that your brother was seriously injured and I understand that he doesn't receive the respect he deserves.
Unfortunately, anyone who runs for office becomes a politician if they weren't already.
I wish I could say that I trusted either candidate, but I don't. Our political system of mudslinging makes it hard to trust anyone running for office.
Thanks for reading, commenting, and all the applause. I appreciate it.

You're right I've never hated a president more than I do now. Believe me the city I live in generated all their hate for that man into a laser could kill him 300 times over. Your opinon is totally right, although I don't know much of Obama's views I do plan to vote democrat. In my opnion I was a Ron Paul fan even though if I remember he was a republican but I don't know my memory sucks.
Anyway hopefully with Obama there will be less drama.
I know this election year is gonna be extremely crucial. Since I now have a say even though I believe that the voting system is totally rigged.
If all else fails Im packing my bags and heading to Australia seems like there are a lot less problems down there lol
Interesting read!

Hi Miranda!
Bush is enough to turn a Republican into a Democrat! Let's hope he turns a lot of them.
Yes, Bush has gotten us into war in Iraq, caused prices to sky rocket, especially gas prices, damaged the health and educational systems of the country, and is seriously harming the economy. He has also taken away some of our rights.
What has he done good? I can't think of anything. Oh, he gives us tax rebates as an economic stimulus and political bribe, which we'll have to pay back. His administration is why an economic stimulus seems necessary. It seems like free money, but it ain't.
Thanks for reading, commenting, and all the applause. I appreciate it.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing your opinion. To be honest I agree with a lot of what you are saying. Though I do want to say that I do like Obama.
One of the reasons that I liked Obama was because he was for reform in our education system. Which currently in my opinion is not working. I think for as advanced as our society is we should be better educated. But we are not. We have this system that says no child is left behind. Great. I don't want any child left behind either... however, I do want the children who can excell to do so. Not be pushed back because all of our funds are being taken to help those kids not be left behind.
I also, like the idea of Obama taking troops out of Iraq tho not all at once. Let's do what's safe for our boys if it takes an extended stay to go out slowly for the safety of our troops then I go for that. But I do believe a pull out is necessary.
I agree in the years now that we have been over in Iraq all we have done is be murdered and kill people trying to defend their own homeland. Which is wrong.
I agree we were told that there were Mass destruction weapons and none were ever found. I agree we were lied to once again by our government.
To be honest I do not know a whole lot about politics but I have been listening and watching a lot of it lately... so this is why I wanted this contest. I wanted to hear what everyone thought about what this election is truly about. I want everyones true opinion.
Thank you for sharing. And good luck in the contest.

I believe that Bush had in mind cutting the funding of public schools and encouraging those with the money to attend private schools subsidized with federal money. He also privatized medicare and medicaid. Anyway, it has harmed both the educational and health systems of the country.
More of the same, McCain, can be expected to follow similar policies. I believe we need a change from the Republican administration.

I'm only 12, and I live in the Uk, but I think Obama should be president. He wants to get troops out of Iraq, which, as far as I'm aware, is a very good thing. Why should people die for no reason? It seems to me like we're all fighting because we were told to. All troops should just abandon war completely.

Thank You
Thanks for reading and commenting. I appreciate it.
I'd like to see the US leave Iraq, but I'm afraid we are there for the oil. We'll probably stay even if Obama is elected.
America talks a good show of individual freedoms and free trade and free enterprise, but our policies don't live up to it.
Troops agree to fight to the death if necessary. They are not likely to abandon war.

Oh yee Obama has been elected for the November election
Yay him lol -
I loved this!
Everything about this was so true but I really like Obama and he does seem reliable.
However I liked how this was done and I hope you do vote for Obama becasue he is the only fresh thing around

I hope that Obama is elected and I hope that he's good for the country and the world in which we have a major influence. I also hope for a Democratic Congress.

Food for Thought,
Andy, I am so pleased that you are thinking seriously about the vote you have. In America you have a voluntary voting system. In Australia, we have a compulsory voting system. Neither are brilliant systems, but I don't know if Americans know that the way they vote for their President directly affects the rest of the world; America is such a world player and if you throw away your vote without thinking about it, you get a garbage President and we in the rest of the world suffer the result. Everyone, listen to Andy and vote very carefully. But please do vote. Make a vote for us, the rest of the world. Mr. Bush has virtually made a laughing stock of the USA during his Presidency. In Australia he acts like a spoiled brat, and I bet the news never got back to the USA.
My uninformed choice would be leaning towards Obama, but what do I know, I'm in Australia. I think Obama may not be the best for the USA, but I think he might be what the world needs from America at this point in time. Clinton, well, I hear she's holding up her campaign with her own money now - not a good sign. John McCain - he could die in office, he doesn't sparkle with health. America needs competent, decisive leadership. It's your choice, don't muck it up this time, folks.

It seemed clear that we'd have a democratic president in 2008 in 2004, but McCain has much more popularity than I can understand. It seems that the American people may not be able to wise up. That worries me. As I said in the essay, I think the vice presidential choices will have a major influence.

Wonderful flow
Though you brought vice presidents into it, i told you i wanted your political view points and so this will not harm your chance at all... that was wonderfully written, with a good flow, order, and it attacked each one well... well done and good luck!

APPLAUSE!
Excellent essay. Clear, concise, communicative.
I agree with you, but then again, even though I was born in NY, since I am a resident of Puerto Rico I can't vote for the U.S. President. To tell you the truth I've lived here for 48 of my 52 years and I really don't feel that I am a United Stater. (I take exception to the term "American" because it ignores every other country in this hemisphere except the United States of North America.) In any case, right now I have to think about the upcoming Puerto Rico general election (we do governor, mayors, senators, and representatives in one fell swoop). Both the main parties here (Popular Democratic which is pro-commonwealth or autonomy; and New Progressive which is pro-statehood; which is ridiculous because the United States would definitely never want us to become a state... just think of it... a Spanish-speaking state, with all the anti-Mexican, anti-Hispanic, anti-immigration backlash going on in the States these days!) have been deep into corruption. In fact, our present governor has 19 charges field against him by the FBI and he's the candidate for his party! (The case against him will be heard in the Federal District Court for Puerto Rico in February 2009.)Irish is right: we are reduced to picking the lesser of two evils.

Thanks again
I would love very much to see Puerto Rico become a state and I believe it deserves it, but I agree that the climate now is against it. I would like all of the US protectorates to become states, but it definitely won't happen with a Republican administration.

This is why I hate politics - it comes down to picking the lesser of two evils. I am not really satisfied with any of the presidential candidates that are still in the running, and it's extremely frustrating. But I agree fully and whole-heartedly that we need a change - the country's going to hell without even the comfort of a handbasket. We're setting ourselves up to be the villians of the world. Maybe I'll move to Canada...

As for the writing of this, it was well-organized, flowed nicely, and easy to follow. I didn't catch any grammar or spelling errors, and I think you argued things clearly. Good luck in the contest!
-
-
Wow!!
I can hardly believe it! You read through and found nothing to correct

I thought about moving to Mexico or Canada during the Vietnam war because I didn't want to get drafted. I didn't believe in killing and didn't want to be killed. I finally decided on joining the Coast Guard. I didn't speak Spanish and Canada was too cold. I'm glad I made the decision I made.
I think our country is very good, but government has become too powerful. It is funny, the Republicans usually claim to want less government, but with Bush, it has become more dominant.
Thanks for reading and commenting.

I agree with most everything you said. I am registered Democrat but I don't blindly follow 100% of the things they say or do. This country is in desperate need for a change.
There is an interesting 'match-making' quiz online that asks you where you stand on certain key issues. It then compares your answers to that of the presidential nominees to see who you should vote for based simply on ideals. The answers are pretty interesting. If you want I can IM you the link.
Oh on the read, it was good, like I said. I didn't catch any grammatical errors or anything like that.
Good Luck in the contest.

Thanks Jack
I'm glad that we agree on most things. McCain scares me. The Republicans are solidifying behind him. I hope the Democrats are able to do better once the nomination is confirmed. Downright spooky the way the Democrats are divided right now. Almost 50/50. I look forward to the quiz.

you know when I clicked on this story I half expected to see a picture of an amazingly hot girl wearing nothing but a few well placed hillary or obama stickers.

The split is scary. I've alredy heard some clinton supports say if she doesn't get the nod they won't vote for obama. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing since I don't really want people who think that way picking our next president.
Oh and to follow what Irish said, I think we already are the villians of the world. Just picture Dick Cheney (the real one in charge) in a black cloak and all the soldiers in white plastic suits.
okay, its not that bad but its close. -

Sorry to disappoint you, Jack.
If I had more time, I'll look around for a beauty in political lingerie. Unfortunately, that might take a while.
You know I like pretty women.

Very nice personal opinion based on some intresting facts. I'm behind you all the way. I for one also don't like how the government is ran. Something needs to be done about all these rising prices. Gas makes everything else go up. So the answer to this would be more E35 or what ever that corn gas is for every vehicle in the united states. THey have converters that arn't quite legal that they could approve but the EPA is evaluating them supposedly but you know how the oil barrons are. Keep anything that makes the planet safer takes money from thier greedy hands. The only way to fix the economy is to provide the additional sources so that the public can use them. Elimiante at least 50% of the people that use regular unleaded gas and you lower gas prices due to the amount of people using it. Means more can be used.
We need someone not afraid of the barrons and their greedy hands. I'm afraid none of the canidates will suffice. The US has a trillion dollar debt. I highly ever doubt it will be paid back in anyone's life time.

-
-
Thanks Fizbop
It is unlikely that the debt will be brought under control until somebody starts trying. The way it is now, The rich get richer and the poor and middle class go further into debt.
The democrats usually try to stand up for the little guys.

I second that. Anyone would be better than what we have now...why can't we go back to Bill's adminastration? Everything seemed so much better then. Anyway, Great write!

Hi.
Thanks for reading and commenting. If we vote for Hillary, I believe we should be voting for Hillary, not Bill. I'll support which ever one gets the nomination because I am probably going to support a Democrat unless a very powerful independent or third party candidate comes along. I don't see that happening.
I'm glad you like this write.
