Living an Orphan Life

People thought after The Vietnamese War that things would be better, but it was not the way things were in Vietnam, Saigon. Death had scattered humans’ mind. There were many people that were in hunger. There were children that lived homeless and became orphan. Their parents died during The Vietnamese War. Children were appeared lost in the middle on the street. They called for their parents’ help and their tears flowed into stream without ending, but there were no response. Not many people were really concern for children from calling out loud for help because they had their own problems, hunger, sickness, and disease. Hung was one of children that were orphan and homeless. 1

When Hung was 10 years old, his parents had already left him on the earth. His parents got killed during The Vietnamese War, leaving him alone by himself in Saigon. They died because they couldn’t escape a bomb. A bomb blew their flesh apart like a balloon was explored. Air torrent everywhere and blood surged as broken streams. Hung had no clue what he was doing in Saigon without his parents. He was barely having enough food each day in his stomach. He had a hard time living. He begged for food. Some day he got some food while another day he got none. When Hung was in hunger, he became a thief. He stole food from people. Some day he got lucky and he ran away with his food. Meanwhile, other days he got caught, beat up, and threw outside of the street. Bruise was everywhere in his skinny body and face, but pain did not stop him from stealing food. Hunger was more pain than beating. Hunger was a burden to Hung. He was in hunger steady, but no one was really mind about him. Some people just passed by and saw him as a ghost. Another people felt sympathy. They gave him some food to eat, but it was not enough for him to pass another day. Death had been strike Hung most of time, but he was alive. Hunger was unpleasant to Hung. Living an orphan life in Saigon was a hard life. Hung felt that he needed to do something to end his hunger. Begging and stealing were not a good way to eliminate hunger. 2

Hung decided to find a job, so he could have money or food to feed him. There was no one that was willing to hire a skinny 10 years old kid to work. He kept searching for a place to work in return for food, but he came out with an empty hand. 3

He once stopped at the restaurant and told the manager, “Excuse me, sir. I need a job to feed my stomach.” 4

“How old are you, kid?” The manager was surprise and laugh. 5

“I am 10 years old, but I can do anything like washing disc, serving food, cleaning the floor, or anything in return for food.” 6

“We don’t hire kid here.” The manager walked away. 7

“I need a job. I am hungry.” Hung was desperate for a job. He ran to the manager pulling his ankle and asking for a job. The manager told his workers to throw Hung out of the restaurant. Hung was hungry. He was in pain, but he was never shed tear at his age. He was beaten and got many bruise, but he was hardly cry. He stood tall and kept search for another job. He wouldn’t lead death to play the game. Would Hung be able to find a job and end his hunger since he was only 10 years old? Was he going to survive? 8

No, he couldn’t find a job at his age, but he was survived. He was adopted by rich family who brought him to the hospital. Hung was accidentally hit by a motorcycle. He fell down, not because he got hit, but he was hungry. He was end up in the hospital and in a rich family. 9
