Senses

The spirits of the former tenants are still in the house; I’ve heard the music, I’ve heard the laughter, I’ve heard the howls in the night. 1

I’ve seen the smolders in my dreams. Their faces have haunted me from behind a gauzy veil. My night has been filled with their happy moments, with their dancing, with their final moments. I’ve woken with their terror soaring through my body, trembling from their fright.2

I’ve spent the days walking the same corridors they ran through, playing games and fleeing in terror. I’ve touched the soil, rich in their dust. I’ve ran my fingers along their banister, the memories flying towards me like leaves in the wind.3

I’ve smelled their bones burning, the flesh melting. My stomach has been turned one too many times at the smell of their hair burning in the midnight sky. Their terrorized faces pierced my minds eye, the pictures running on rapid replay.4

My lungs constricted with theirs while the flames licked at their skin. I’ve tasted the wine, my mouth has been filled with the fumes or the gas. I’ve felt my skin crackle with theirs on the night of their deaths.5

I’ve been there since that night, I was there that night, so I’m left to wonder; why am I still alive?6

Author notes

This wasn't where I intended for this to go, but oh well. The starting point was actually someone's blog. Their grandparents had recently died and they said "My grandparents are still here, I can hear the music." I liked that and I went with it.

    Thank you!

I think this could be a full-length story. It is very well written and full of description and emotion//making the reader want more. The question at the end warrants continuation. Very Very well done. Enjoyed it from beginning to end and wish you all the best in your writing. You're a talent! ~D
