The Hitchhiker (chapter 3)

I was on my way out of the1

washroom for the second time.2

I passed by a man,3

that was drenched by the rain.4

He looked like a quiet man.5

As I walked past him,6

I could feel his eyes burning7

a hole right through me.8

I could feel the hair9

on the back of my neck10

standing up.11

I turned around to see if he12

was still staring at me.13

To my surprise,14

he vanished.15

Just as quick as I spotted him,16

he was gone.17

I walked up to the counter,18

payed the store clerk19

what I owed him for the gas20

and headed for the door.21

Store Clerk: "Would that be all miss?"22

I turned around, walked back23

to the counter and24

grabbed a couple of25

chocolate bars for the road.26

Me: "I'll take these too, please."27

My hands were shaking,28

as I placed the chocolats bars29

on the counter.30

Store Clerk: "Are you okay miss?"31

Me: "I'm not used to being on32

a dark highway by myself33

in a storm."34

Store Clerk: "We have a room in35

the back, if you want to36

stay for the night."37

Me: "No, that's okay, I have a38

babysitter taking care of39

my kids and she's40

probably wondering41

where I am."42
