This Life1

Make me an offer, he had said. Make me an offer, and it’s yours. All yours. You can have it.3
She hadn’t taken it. It was all right there—right freaking there in front of her. 4
No matter, though. There were plenty of other fish in the sea, and he could have any one. Rejection didn’t get him like it got most people. Hell, he’d been rejected so many times that . . . well, never mind that. The point was, though, that he didn’t care.5
He didn’t care that she loved someone else; he didn’t care that he had lost his best friend. He didn’t care that she was with an asshole, and he didn’t care that it made him sick. No, he’d decided not to care anymore and that was that. No buts about it. 6
It was her choice after all. She could have him and they could ride off into the sunset in his 75’ Buick. It didn’t leave him stranded. No, better. It left him open. He was open to anyone, anything, no strings attached. Yeah, this is the life.7
Make me an offer, he had said. Make me an offer, and it’s yours. All yours. You can have it; I don’t care.8
