Diego (pt. 3)

“I’ve gotta get out of here.” I tried to think clearly, since I needed to formulate a good plan to leave town without anyone knowing. “Son of a…” “Hey! Watch your mouth!” James said to me. “Look bro. I’m wanted for murder. It hasn’t even been a full night yet. How in the heck could they have processed the paperwork and done all that legal mumbo jumbo. Huh?” James thought for a moment. “Dude, just don’t answer that. I’ve got too much on my mind as it is.”2

About an hour and a half later, I figured it out. Have you ever seen anything good come of people running from the law, besides a good storyline, that is? No. They usually end up dead. So, I’m gonna turn myself in. And even though I didn’t commit the crime, I’m going to confess to it. Then, I’ll go from there. Yeah, I’m probably crazy. And if I die, at least it’ll be somewhat dignified. I told this to James and he thought I was crazy and left. He wanted no part of it. Coward, that’s what he is. Or maybe, just maybe, he’s more right that I want him to be.3

Nighttime came, and so did my last taste of freedom, as I approached the sheriff’s station. I opened up the door and, to my surprise, no one was there. At least that’s what I thought.
