Popularity Theory

You all know that girl at school who everybody hangs around, who always gets what she wants? Thats right. The "POPULAR" one.1

Well, I'm suggesting a different theory. After a rather upsetting incident with a "popular" person, I looked up the word on dictionary.com.2

American Heritage Dictionary - Cite This Source - Share This pop·u·lar (3

pŏp'yə-lər 4

adj. 5

1. Widely liked or appreciated 6

THIS WAS THE FIRST DEFINITION. Nowhere did I see snotty or mean or spoiled (sorry to those popular people who are not like this, I'm just writing about those at my school).7

So, occording to dictionary.com, I could be popular (yeah, me. Ha! Who would've known?)8

'Cause this is my thought. Many people who are considered "popular" by our school's definition ARE NOT actually that well liked. Don't believe me? Ask some of my friends! Many of us who are not "popular" by school definition, however, are actually LIKED by our friends (again, sorry to those who are not like this. Again, I'm only talking about my school.).9

Hey, I might be popular!10

Done with my little rant.

Author notes

I'm so, soooo sorry if this offended anyone. I'm just talking about those at my school.

I'm really sorry if this offended anyone. Just tell me if you'd like me to change anything.

I found this out a while ago and had your same recation. The "popular" girls at my school are HATED! I've heard people wish them dead. And hey, I'm a pretty well liked person. Yay us!
    Side Note:I'm 13 as well, !

Your little rant sounds a lot like my school. Sure, some popular people are nice, but the super popular people are jerks, and we, normal people like me (lol), refer to those people as preps. There are a lot of other people who are preps, but the word "prep" at my school has come to mean "a rude, snotty, selfish, stupid person". I wish we could all get along and not be mean, you know? Then we could all hold hands around a campfire and sing songs...

I hear about this at many schools, but the most popular people at my school are the ones who are really nice and cool. They're the people who know and like everyone. Every popular person I know is actually really nice and always goes out of their way to be accepting.

Ignore those rude people who believe that it's okay to be mean. As soon as you're out of school, those 'popular' people will fall. Most of those intolerant, arrogant people amount to nothing and have only their highschool popularity to cling onto.

    Don't worry about offending people

Although that is probably why you are well-liked

  • This is sooo true! I've always wondered what "popular" actually meant, and the people at our school are really not well liked and do they even like each other? So anyway, great write and nice dictionary definition

  • Haha, I greatly enjoyed your little rant. I love how you went and looked up the definition and came up with something of your own. I thought it was freaking awesome! I love your few on things. I'm somewhat "popular" but that's just a stereotype. So, no worries hun.

this is true, don't change anything about this.if people like to be around you, then you are popular in their eyesight.

I completely agree. I go to a small school and am in a class of 15. The only reason I'm called "popular" (which I actually don't really like be called) is b/c most people enjoy being around me. They think I'm funny and easy to be around. Your theory is completely right in my opinion. I've known really retarted "popular" girls. The only reason they got that label was b/c the guys thought they were hot. But nobody really liked them. Great theory. I love it.

  • power is all about the mind. It's all sort of a game. These people at your school have somehow convinced the rest of the school that they should care about what they do and that's why they're "popular". if you act like they don't exist without pointedly ignoring them it might help.
however you did make me thankful that my school is laid back and doesn't really have any clique of "popular" people

  • Sounds like you know some pretty mean popular people ^^

I don't think there really are any stereotypically popular people at my school but we have a really small school, so everyone knows each other. There are bullies, I guess, but they're pretty harmless ones. I guess we all just do what we want; hang out with who we want. Times like these when I really appreciate how lucky I am to be in such a friendly school.

    *hugs desk* lol.

But you're right; back in primary school I drew that conclusion myself. People don't seem to realise how hard school can be. Of course, surely that doesn't change out there in the real world? Adults don't seem to be all that much more mature than us.

I thought it was a very nice rant

  • this is astoundingly true. 'Popular' people are just the ones who scare the crap out of a few people. The smart ones quietly hate them, while the others are cowardly and suck up to them enough not to get slaughtered through gossip

You are the most popular person on the planet I have always thought this, that the "popular" people aren't actually popular because every body hates them. Including me, of course...they even hate each other. No body likes them *ahem* anyways...this is really cool. Yes, I am popular too Anyways.....great job!

  • Its true, we don't always consider the true meaning of words when we use them, they just get intergrated as something else. Good point you've brought up there, well done!
