"John, you have to stop this. It has to stop now. I can't put up with this anymore."1
I looked up from the newspaper with which I was hiding my face. "Stop what?"2
Renee grimaced in despair. "You know what. I know what you did. You can stop lying about it!"3
"I didn't do nothing."4
My wife stared at me viciously. "Oh, yes, you did. You did something. You DID OPIUM! How dare you? After all we've been through together! How could you sink so low?"5
I gripped the handle of my coffee mug and forced down a gulp of the luke-warm liquid. I needed the caffeine, but the drink was disgusting. I rubbed my burning eyes with my free hand, but didn't reply to the woman.6
"That's it, John. I'm not dealing with you. You're such a failure. You're so weak!"7
I waved my arm passively in her direction. "Then leave. I don't care."8
Tears welled up in her eyes as she grabbed her keys off the kitchen table in front of me and stormed out of the apartment. I took another swig of the coffee. Renee wasn't a concern of mine; I had all I would ever need. Opium would keep me strong.9
The front door buzzer sounded from a speaker near my ear. I pushed myself off my chair, mug in hand, and made my way to the apartment entrance. When I unlocked the front door and pulled it open, a familiar face greeted me with a seductive smile.10
"Hello, John," the gorgeous woman breathed.11
This, I repeated silently, is all I need. "Hello, Opium."
