It was dark. "No moon tonight", he'd said. Clara often thought of things Tod had said in the past, when he was alive. Noples, Tennessee. Born, bred, lived, worked, grown, matured. Never a thought of leaving, never. No really, never. Leaving was beyond the question, especially now that Tod was buried in the back yard. There was no leaving now. If Clara left, someone would dig up Tod.2
Tod deserved what he'd gotten. He deserved to be in the backyard, under the cold, wet dirt. He had wanted to leave! If he'd left.. she would have been forced into going with him, as his wife... it was her duty. She couldn't start over somewhere else.. it would be too hard and strenuous, and she was getting old. No. No. No. It was the right thing to do. He would have only ruined what little life he had left, moving somewhere new to start a new job. Staying was surely the best thing to do, the ONLY thing to do. Staying was going against change, giving it a kick in the butt and that's what she wanted to do! Tod didn't. They had fought, he had threatened to 'make' her go... and she'd simply pulled out one of the butcher knives and shoved it right through the left side of his chest. 3
Blood was tough to clean up! She'd had to scrub for the rest of the afternoon, then she'd waited until it got dark to start her dirty task. It was dark. No moon. Cold. As she began to dig the hole, next to the gardening shed she sighed to herself and thought how pretty a little herb garden would be right here. Maybe she'd plant one after she filled the hole with it's contents...*4
Moral
5Change is inevitable, don't fight it or you'll end up charged with murder.6
