What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say ‘curse’? Most would say a position in which one’s fate defies his or hers expectations or something along those lines. Fate is situations outside his or hers own control. With this in mind why do people decide that fate doesn’t exists? Is it the fear of believe that nothing can go your way? Something else? And who said fate always leads to bad things? These are opinionated questions but decide for yourself after this story.1
Draped by sleepiness, a staggering high school student named Tris stumbles his way to class where he hopes to get some more sleep hopefully. Don’t think lightly about Tris though, he has his reasons . . . reason for being tired. He was up until about two in the morning doing his pornographic search. Like I said ‘a normal male high school student’ and don’t doubt it, it’s a guy thing. The bad part is it’s test day and Tris despises test days and he hates the teacher with a passion. Although there is a highlight for his class and her name is Jessica. Jessica, as Tris views her is the goddess of all the worlds glories wrapped up into one soul and confined to one body. For short, the love that he can never get from being the shyest nervous wreck of all time. He was able to finally ask her out but it was two years ago and they stopped dating each other since they weren’t ready to establish a relationship since they were both too shy. Tris is still shy but Jessica has almost grown out of it.2
Tris’ life isn’t all great there’s the idiot in the mix, Moe. Only a few seats away from Tris, whom has disrupted his life since the fourth grade. Moe is bastard out for revenge ever since Tris beat the living hell out of him during a fight only a few weeks ago. He swore revenge but yet has been seen from him.3
Class went by somewhat smoothly and Tris was on his way to his locker. He saw Jessica at her locker just to the right of his. It was daily to him but he always took a deep breath in slight fear as he walked forward to his locker.4
“Hey Tris, so are you having a good day? You looked like you had a major hangover this morning.” Tris glanced back at her while remembering all he did that previous night and said, “Oh, I just didn’t get much sleep last night, that’s all. You seemed hyped up over today’s assignment, what’s up with that?”5
She gave a grin and replied happily, “I already know what I’m going to do my essay over.” “Oh really what about?”6
Tris reached up to open his locker and then there were two screams that could be heard throughout the high school. The scream startled everyone including the teachers. Teachers and students rushed to the point of where the screams originated. They were in terror.7
Sirens of the ambulance flared strongly but there was only pain between two people. Voices roared “Shit its affecting the eyes get some sponges!” “Where are those sponges?” “There aren’t any here, they’re at the hospital.” Then it all seemed black, so very black.8
Tris awoke only to darkness even with opened eyes which were harder to move for some odd reason. Then he felt cloth. Scarf? Sheets? Bandages? Bandages! It was bandages covering both eyes. He felt a sudden large prick in arm. Reactions started to take place, he immediately closed up him up arm or tried. He felt a hand grabbing a hold of his arm at the wrist. “Doctor, he’s awoken. Hold still!” The prick was sudden constant the he realized there was a needle in his arm. That made him queasy.9
A cold hand was placed on his forehead then he heard in a stern voice, “Tris, it’s your doctor, Dr. Scrape. Listen we think you’re blind from some acid in a powder form that may have burnt your retinas so we’re going to keep your eyes covered for a while until we can be for sure if there is any permanent damage. Don’t worry someone else is here with you so you two can keep yourself company.”10
Tris noticed that he had left by the door closing in the near distance and the sudden quietness. He thought for a moment on who else would be there with him then it hit him, Jessica. He was fearful to call her name so instead he said quietly, “Um is anyone else here?”11
Yet again there was a slight moment of silence then a familiar voice arose from the left. “Hey Tris, I’m still here. Dark over there?” She tried to make a fake laugh to cover up her fear but it wasn’t working, Tris could easily tell it was fake.12
“Jessica,” Tris started fearfully, “can you see anything? It’s darker than midnight here.” “Yes, one eye is okay the other isn’t. I heard about you already you got it severely.”13
“Yeah, I guess so. So how long do you think we’ll be in here?”14
“I have no earthly idea.”15
* * *16
The week went by slowly and day after day they waited for the blood test to show up with the results to show if they were going to lose their sight. Visitors were almost daily with their families and friends leaving inanimate objects like flowers and ‘get well’ cards behind in hopes they would cure their soul from the hardship. They continued to talk to each other trying their best to keep one another company, but Tris was growing more fearful which caused him to be more jittery and shaky in nervousness. Not because of the dark but more personal reasons. Reasons he didn’t feel like discussing. Reasons he would rather be bottled up.17
Jessica was reading some of the cards classmates left to them while sitting at the foot of Tris’ bed. After she got done with one of the cards she noticed Tris’ hand shaking, just shaking for not apparent reason.18
“Tris, is there something wrong?”19
Tris jumped and nervously replied, “Huh, oh no. Why do you ask?” Tris was moving his hand under the covers of his sheets.20
“Your just shaking, are you sure your okay?”21
“No, I’m just cold, that’s all.” It wasn’t cold not even chilly but Jessica didn’t want to know so she dropped it.22
It was about midnight and Jessica was sitting upright in her bed reading a book with her one good eye. It sometimes gave her a headache but she keep reading. Tris couldn’t get any sleep him fear keep getting worse and worse as every time the clock ticked. Finally, he gave in. He up from his bed and tried to slowly move toward Jessica. Jessica didn’t notice anything.23
“Jessica, I need to talk to you about som—.” WHAM! He hit the ground after he tripped over a slipper. Jessica snapped out of her trance then raced down next to him. “Tris, are you okay?” She helped him up and over to his original destination, her bed. She set him down on her bed and then sat down next to him.24
“What’s wrong? You know you can’t see anything.”25
Tris’ head was lowered but then turned his head as though he was looking directly at her eyes. She felt strange, she felt like he was really looking at her as though he could see her. It crept her out but then she noticed the expression on his face. The frown told a lot but it clearly stated that there was something wrong.26
“Jessica,” he started, “what do you fear?” She felt awkward from the comparison of the question and of his face expression but replied and thinking, “I fear a lot of things. I fear heights. I fear needles. I slightly death. I used to have a fear of small places. Just a lot of things. Why are asking that for . . . Tris?”27
Tris frowned expression stayed the same body was erect but he was motionless. Jessica felt very odd but her thoughts on concluding what he was trying to accomplish were disrupted when Tris finally said, “I have just gained a fear . . . and it’s not of darkness either.”28
Jessica noticed that he was sad which was new to her, he was cheerful whenever she saw him probably because of his crush toward her. She became interested to see what was bothering him. “Then what is it? What do you fear, now?”29
His hand was trembling and she noticed it but he continue, “I-I-I fear you. No, no not you. I fear that I may never see you again . . . because of my sight. I have forgotten what you look like during this week. Your face fades in the fog on my imagination. I fear that if I lose my sight I’ll never be able to see you again. It hurts to think about but I fear it may be the truth and I don’t like it.”30
She felt slightly shocked and was paralyzed at the mouth, she couldn’t say anything until she barely caught a glimpse of someone that made her feel more sympathy for him. She saw that the bandages on his eyes were getting wet spots, spots caused by tears. She didn’t know what to do but then she decided to cherish the moment by kissing him. “I know you what you mean and I’ve been thinking . . . do you think we start going back out?”31
Still shocked by the sudden, quick kiss he replied, “I . . . uh . . . sure. I would love to but what about my sight?”32
“I don’t care really besides I’m sure we’re going to be able to see again.” She then quickly kissed him again but then he slipped in another kiss. Soon the were making out. Tris had been kissed before but being blind while being kissed was amazing, his other senses were stronger which made the kiss more desirable. She didn’t mind him being she was thinking how much better it is so he couldn’t see her blush. It took only five minutes before they realized they were tired. They promised each other a date for the following day and went to sleep happy and finally calm.33
For the following two days they left the hospital and went out on dates. Of course, Jessica basically was the leader since Tris was blind but she didn’t mind. She felt great to be back with an old crush of hers. Tris enjoyed every moment even if he couldn’t see but because he could feel. It was overwhelming to him how an old, unsuccessful relationship got rekindled into a strong bond. He questioned to himself: was this fate?34
They awoke the third day to find their doctor waiting for them with a grin on his face. “Good morning. I’ve heard that you two have been getting along well from what the nurse tells me. Ha ha, well I’ve got even better news your eyes are just fine. We though the powder was acid but it’s only some powder that starts foaming when it touches a liquid, kinda like vinegar and baking soda but at any rate you may take off your bandages and go home. Just take them off slowly, it’s going to hurt to look at light for a few minutes so I’ll just turn off these lights.” He walked over to the light switch and flipped them off. When he turned Tris was almost about ready to take off the bandages and Jessica was just starting on hers.35
For Jessica the light slightly burned but it burned more than anything on Tris. When his became adjusted to the light he looked around. Everything was fuzzy and waited for them to focus. He found himself looking at Jessica. A smile came to his face and he hugged as the doctor left the room.36
They took the long way home in order to pick up a couple of item before walking into class and making a grand entrance. They felt better that the entire ordeal was over but they were happy since fate pushed for a new relationship between them.37
Their entrance was happily enjoyed by all of them, but they discovered something. They found out who laid the trap. It was Moe. They found out he had been arrested for drug use and attempted murder.38
“There’s something I’ve been hanging onto for a while and I want to give it to you.” Jessica watched as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. He reached in and pulled out a necklace with a heart crest on it. He continues, “Whenever we started dating I bought this and I never was able to give it to you since we broke up, but hey now’s a better time than any it’s almost Christmas.”39
“Thank you, Tris.” She put it on and kissed him.40
Fate isn’t exactly controllable nor is it uncontrollable, fate decides what would be utilitarian for everyone. It one of those phenomenons that no one can explain nor can it be decrypted into everyday terms but it is powerful if it does exist. So did this story provide an example of fate and did it help answer those questions? Well if not I can’t help you and besides I made the entire story up off the top of my head so it probably didn’t. I believe that fate should remain opinionated and nothing else because I don’t believe anyone is ready to call fate true or false.41
