Murders in the Mansion: Chapter One

"Kevin's got quite the house" I thought to myself as I waited for the others in the Library. Honestly, "house" was a bit of an understatement. I could only guess the writing site business paid extremely well because the abode of our esteemed site creator could more likely be termed as "a mansion." The place was HUGE!!! I couldn't believe Kevin had invited us all to a party here for the tenth Storywrite Anniversary.1

The upstairs floor was presumably private but Symitar had shown us all around the main floor. Barbara had gone gaga over the ornately decorated ballroom and the wood-paneled Study and it had been extremely difficult to get Azaradelle and Crazy Scott out of the Ballroom, they were having so much fun dancing.2

Meanwhile, Cyberartist and GuitarShank had brought their musical instruments and set them up in the Hall. They'd been jamming together for the past hour and, even though they were pretty good, driving the rest of us a bit insane.3

Yoshi97 and Electric Sunrise had been in the Billiard Room earlier but after a few games had settled into the Lounge to relax and poke through Kevin's knick knacks. I myself had been helping AnnD in the Kitchen earlier but the inoxerable pull had caught me up and I'd ended up where I was, admiring Kevin's vast collection of literary works.4

As interested as I was, I knew we were all really starting to wonder when Kevin would get here. Symitar and Ann had let us in and showed us around, telling us Kevin would arrive at the party a little later. Still, it had been almost an hour. While some of us, me included, were perfectly able to get lost in our surrounding, some of the others were getting impatient.5

Suddenly there was a high-pitched scream that chilled my blood. I ran to the door and witnessed, along with most of my fellow moderators, Symitar come running down the stairs screaming her head off. She caught herself at the bottom of the stairs, chest heaving, only to start frantically screaming again when she caught sight of AnnD who had come out of the Conservatory with a blunt knife in one hand and a handful of herbs in the other.6

Seeing what the problem was, I hurried over to Ann and pulled her to the side, taking the knife from her. From the corner of my eye I noticed Barbara trying to calm Symitar down and get some sense out of her. 7

I wandered back to Barbara to see if I could help but by this time Symitar had calmed down and was no longer screaming and babbling incoherently. All of us gathered around, wondering what had gotten her into such a mess.8

"Now Symitar," Barbara said in a gentle tone, most likely the one she used when her children had a nightmare. "What's wrong honey? Please tell us."9

"I-it's Kevin." she whispered. "He-He's..." She paused and swallowed, trying to stop stuttering. "He's DEAD!!!" and with that she burst into tears.10

~.~11

We were all huddled in the Ballroom, it being the biggest room on the bottom floor. With that one unpleasant surprise had come a few others. None of the phones worked. There was no reception for our cellphones on this backwater property. And none of the cars worked...as if we could have left anyway. Symitar was convinced that one of us must have committed the murder so we were all stuck here until someone confessed...or we found some way too break this stalemate. Kevin's body might have given us some clues as to the murder weapon or something if only our Storywrite Supervisor would let any of us into the room. She'd locked it up and hid the key...or something. It wasn't on her person anyway. Cyberartist and Electric Sunrise had actually frisked her. Asking her questions didn't help either, she reverted to incoherent babbling whenever any of us tried. Frankly, some of us were starting to wonder if this was all some sort of prank. After all, we had no real proof that Kevin was dead...12

Did we?13

apart from the names that we all know, I believe you 'sold' yourself on this story. You have so much more ability than this.

I knew you were going to kill Kevin straight away. So, what's to do? a. Kill someone else, b. Kill the butler, c. Kill no one, but steal the silver?

If you are going to play "Clue" you need to go fishing, catch a lot of 'red herrings' to throw in at will. Spoof it even! They made a film once; I forget what it was called, probably "Clue."

Go for Outrageous! Make us roll in the aisles! It is such a good idea, don't let it go to waste. Work it, cuddle it; even change its diapers. Just don't pass this off as a 'silly' write. It does have 'legs.'

I was going to wipe this comment out, no let it stand. You can always tell me to POQ.

    Lis.

this was written a while ago, when I was still in the mods. The others were supposed to continue it, chapter by chapter. Unfortunately, I left just a little while later for the greeters and this story was abandoned.

I really haven't figured out what to do with it yet.

Maybe I'll put together a team and change the names in the story and revive it!!!

      who knows.

Thanks for the advice though. I'll admit it isn't the best...

  • that was interesting

wow, this story is really suspenseful! It's cool how you made the readers think Symita was running from AnnD! Hehe. I'm definately looking forward to reading more

  • Symitar as well as Ann are going to have to do some fancy plotting to distance themselves

I think group novels are a lot of fun. I worked on several in the past. This one is especially interesting because you have the ‘Boss man’ to butcher or not… as it pleases the next writer .

Clever way you worked the different moderators into the plot. Since all but two arrived nearly simultaneously, and Kevin was never actually seen by them I would think the welcoming members would be the prime suspects. Symitar as well as Ann are going to have to do some fancy plotting to distance themselves from that unfavorable position.

But I think Yoshe did it .

The idea of the locked door…well I assume its purpose is so no evidence is disturbed. If the others were curious enough, that would not impede their investigation for long.

I hope someone picks up on why the phones and cars won’t work. The cars and house phones could have been tampered with, but the cell phones? Normally these remain on an individual’s person.

Since this is the opening, has anyone added to it yet? I was just scanning the profiles when I found this. I wouldn’t mind reading more .

    • I started it up but unfortunately no one else seems to have stepped forward to write up the next chapter...so I may just write up a mystery myself.

The cell phones aren't working because of lack of reception i think. No one is getting any bars. It's assumed this is because they are out in the backwaters far away from phone towers.

You're probably right about the cars and phones being tampered with...cept by whom?

I'm interested what makes you think that yoshi is the culprit? Right now sym does seem the most suspicious...since she's not leeting anyone see the body and not giving away any details.

I shall see if I can cajole any of the group to add something so I don't have to do it all myself.

Me and Az, ballroom dancing? Now THAT'S funny! She'd puch me after about the third time I stepped on her toes, and we'd end up wrestling instead.

Fun read, I might take a chapter and kill .... !
