He couldn't’t sleep. Marius could have never prepared for a feeling like this. He clung to the small bundle of blue cloth in his arms, as if it would be taken from him by the dark shadows stretching over the small plain room if he relaxed. He kept in the moonlight that pooled on the bed and spilled over onto the grey stone floor. He had nothing, no one left, except the thing he clutched tightly to his breast, protecting it from all Marius innumerable foes. He couldn't’t stop them from getting him now, but her.....She was a different matter. Nothing would harm this baby; she would not feel the pain he had over his years.1
She stirred in his arms, and reached out a small hand, clutching at nothing and it dropped again, the baby once again returning to a restful slumber. He looked at her face. Her face was blemishless, she was smiling, she had not been in the world long enough to take on its imperfections, its horrors, the woes and torment life brings. He smiled at her and breathed deep, as if to absorb this moment and keep it within him forever. The smile on his face stiffened, but never faded. He walked her over to the small cot and placed her gently down on the the soft cotten beneath her and sliped his hands from behind her. Her face contorted for a moment. She relaxed again, and Marius softly kissed her small forhead. He straightened up and placed a thick envelope on the eage of the bars keeping his small child safe. 2
He knew he would not sleep now. He headed for his coat on the door, walking fast paces, and preatending his heart was shreading up inside him, pretending he was not leaving anything, pretendng that the salty water he felt rolling down his cheak was not his tears. He touched the rough woolen coat, but his arm dropped. One more look. He needed one more look. But he knew if he went back to her, he would not leave. She would have to live as he has had to. This is the only way for her to be happy. He struggeled with himself, fighting the urge to turn back to his only chance at happyness. A grim smile then crossed his face. He had lived a life of emptyness. She would not have the same. If he wasnt here she wouldnt have the same. He once again reached for the coat, but it once again droped. Not from uncertainty however. 3
He slowly dropped to his knees, and slid down the door into a curled position on the floor, the top half of his body crumpeling over the hole in hs chest. He felt life dripping from his body, as his blood spread across the floor away from him, washing away the dull light the moon had cast on the floor, replacing it with a darker, sinister shade. He had waited too long. 4
From the window oposit, a man smiled. It was a very good charm, acurate and strong. It seem a waste to use it on a man like Marius though. But now he knew he was strong enough to use it. His revenge would begin now 5
