Diana grew older; with each passing year she tried harder and harder to hide the fact that she loved books. She would go to sleep early and wake up in the middle of the night just to wind her way to the old library and immerse herself in a book or two before returning to bed.2
Each day she was forced to play with the girls around her age who were daughters of some of her mother's friends. Diana hated them, she could never fit in nor was she entirely sure that she wanted to.3
There was Casey, a bright green-eyed, electric blonde with perfect bodily proportions, Casey was a year older then Diana, she was sixteen and already engaged to a rich boy who lavished beautiful jewelry and gifts on her. Casey was very smug and made it her business to teach the younger girls the ways to best please prospective fiancées. 4
Then there was Maddy, Casey’s shadow. Maddy was just twelve but she professed to know every trick in the book when it came to pleasing boys. Maddy thought her best feature was her eyes, because they were the same exact color as Casey’s. Maddy's hair was a dusty auburn color, showing the change in fashion from blond hair to red in the year that Maddy was made.5
Between Casey and Maddy were the twins who were the same age as Diana.6
Sandy and Candy were not really twins, they lived in two different households, but they looked exactly alike. Their hair color was the same electric blond, almost white, as Casey’s, and their eye color was green as well, but they were both taller then Casey by two inches. Sandy and Candy professed to be able to read each other’s minds, which Diana thought shouldn't be such a hard thing to do since there wasn't much in there.7
"Okay, girls," said Casey in her most annoying bossy voice, "I've had my fiancée bring over four or five of his friends, you really want to impress these men because they might just be the ones to take you home when your too old to live with your families." 8
Diana looked down in dread, she hated when Casey decided to play matchmaker, it meant that Casey would have even more of a reason to ridicule her about her shortcomings.9
Casey, already dressed as if she were about to attend a grand ball, began bringing out her old dresses and some makeup to make over everyone else. She started with Maddy who didn't need much in the make up department but loved when Casey let her ware old dresses. When Maddy was finished, Casey moved on to Sandy and Candy, they already had beautiful attire so Casey proceeded to make them up like china dolls, or in Diana's opinion, clowns.10
"Oh dear," Casey said in a slight snarl, “We can put you in a beautiful dress, and put beautiful makeup but I'm afraid your attitude towards the whole thing will just ruin your chances of ever really being liked." Diana scowled, but there was really not anything she could do against Casey without getting into a lot of trouble.11
The males arrived, all dressed casually, each with an expectant grin upon their face, Diana hated these and many other males, they didn't have to be neutered because they were sons of rich people, they thought this gave this leeway over everything sexual, including women. 12
Diana sat patiently waiting for one of them to find themselves with out a more suitable date and turn to her for companionship. Her eyes were downcast hoping that they would not notice the mistake her father made in asking for blue eyes. 13

Great story so far!
Yeah, I totally see how you show how the expectations of the world affect us. You can look at any magazine and see the same thing that people want girls to look like. Well, I am happy with my dull green eyes, chubbiness, and attitude. Anybody who thinks differently doesn't even deserve to know me, lol

If you look closely at the desciptions of the other girls they all have green eyes... I wanted to show that in this society, even the slightest detail, the slightest differeance, is ridiuled. A good Sci-Fi writer (like Gordan R Dickson) takes the world he or she sees around him or her and, takes what he or she dislikes about that world, and just magnifies it so that these things are glareing in the story.
this is what I am trying to do, you will see it more with the differeance between the Sups and the Gnats in later chapters...
Diana Will find a family, whihc is more important then finding just a boy... I hate forward boys to- they rain on my praide

thought provoking
Oh, I feel horrible for Diana. Now I really want to know why she thinks blue eyes are such a mistake. I love blue eyes, I wish I had blue eyes. It makes me wonder what color Maddy and Casey's eyes are because blue is certainly out of the question. I wonder if they will be some strange color like purple or red or if they'll be an ordinary brown or green.
The fiancee part really got me thinking because the girls seem so young according to today's standards and the boys are so forward that it makes me cringe. I hope Diana finds a boy that's shy and sweet and willing to be a partner to her rather than a dominator of her. Wonderfully thought provoking write!
Keep it up and God bless!

Diana grew older, with each passing year she tried harder and harder to hide the fact that she loved books. She would go to sleep early and wake up in the middle of the night just to wind her way to the old library and immerse herself in a book or two before returning to bed.
Each day she was forced to play with the girls around her age who were daughters of some of her mother's friends. Diana hated them, she could never fit in nor was she entirely sure that she wanted to.
There was Cassy, a bright green-eyed electric blonde with perfect bodily proportions, Cassy was a year older then Diana, she was fourteen and already engaged to a rich boy who lavished beautiful jewelry and gifts on her. Cassy was very smug and made it her buisness to teach the younger girls the ways to best please prospective fiancees.
Then there was Maddy, Cassy's shadow. Maddy was just twelve but she professed to know every trick in the book when it came to pleasing boys. Maddy thought her best feature was her eyes, because they were the same exact color as Cassy's. Maddy's hair was a dusty alburn color, showing the change in fashion from blond hair to red in the year that Maddy was made.
Between Cassy and Maddy were the twins who were the same age as Diana.

(fixed spelling/punctuation for you) This is an awesome story! I can't wait to read more! My g/f's name is Diana and she seems almost EXACTLY like the one in your story. *smiles*
