Dead or Alive: Makes No Difference-Ch. 2

Luke and Milo made their way up to a small secluded area where they could easily burn the bones. Luke chattered on about some girl he was dating at the moment while Milo sat in the passenger seat and watched as the scenery passed by, thinking about the situation at hand. He wasn’t much for talking most of the time, so he usually let his fun loving friend do it all. They pulled into a dirt drive. The place where they were going to dispose of the bones was run down and it was obvious no one had lived there for some time. 1

After Luke had put the car in park and they’d gotten out, the two walked to the back of the car. There they took out the body bag, which held the bones.2

“How much do you know about Jess?” Milo asked as they burnt the bones behind the run down barn on the property. The place really was perfect for burning them. Luke had suggested the place because he knew nobody every questioned weird smells or towers of smoke.3

Luke had grown up in the open county of Ashtabula, where they were now. The county was predominately known for many of its residents having Meth labs. Luke knew that the law wouldn’t be sent after them for starting a fire in the fields, so this place was the best place to burn the bones. 4

The reason for burning the bones, rather than burying them, was that they wanted to be safe. They didn’t want someone accidentally digging up the bones and then have the bones tracked back to them somehow. Burning the bones meant they could spread the ashes around and not worry. 5

“Not much.” Luke responded to the question Milo had asked. “She’s Caitlyn’s friend really. But she’s nice. Has a good sense of humor when you get her in the right mood. Personally I think she’s gonna make a pretty good doctor. Why do you ask? Wait you aren’t thinking…?” Luke was looking directly at his friend now. 6

“I don’t know what I’m thinking, only that she was the one that found the bones and I know that neither you or myself has mentioned what we’re doing, and as annoying as Caitlyn is, I’m sure it’s safe to assume that she didn’t say anything. So unless somebody said something, I’d have to assume it was possibly Jess. She was the one that called you about it and was there.” Milo explained as they walked back to Luke’s car.7

“I don’t know, Mi. This is Jess we’re talking about. When has she ever done anything wrong to any of us? Honestly you and Caitlyn are the only ones who ever get in any real arguments and who have some sort of intentions of malice, to each other at least.” Luke said as they reached the car and he pulled his keys out of his pocket. He unlocked the door and the two of them got in.8

“Maybe she cracked under the pressure of what we’re doing. She did suggest we call the cops.” Milo told him. Luke looked at him when he said this, trying to figure out if something had snapped in his friend’s brain.9

“Milo, she was scared. That wasn’t something she was expecting when she went in there.”10

“I’m just saying, Luke. We can’t be too careful, especially when we’re around her. Just keep you eyes open.”11

“I will, but I still say it wasn’t her.” They drove the hour-long drive back to the hospital. When they got there, Caitlyn and Jess were no longer in the abandoned section of the hospital; rather they were running around checking the vitals of patients, following the orders of Dr. Charlt. They were late, but both knew they’d be all right since Charlt liked both of them. In reality however Charlt seemed to favor the male residents over the female residents, thinking that the men knew more and were more competent. The fact that he thought this always got on Caitlyn’s nerves and although she knew she couldn’t tell him off, she knew she could take it out on her favorite person, Milo. It didn’t help the matter, when the moment Milo went up to Charlt to find out his first patient of the day, he found out he was working with Caitlyn on a comatose patient.12

“You’ll be fine, Vermodi. She needs to see what a real doctor’s like and I think you’re perfect for showing her that job.” He’d said when Milo had asked to be put with another resident.13

“Fine. I’ll work with her, sir.” He said before taking off to find Caitlyn.14

“Charlt put us together.” He said as he entered the room of the young twenty-three year old comatose patient. According to the man’s charts he’d been skydiving with some friends and something had gone wrong.15

“I know. You two take care it?” she questioned, referring to the bones. She was trying hard not to show any annoyance towards him.16

“Yeah, it’s done.” He said as he went over to check the IV.17

“I already checked it.” Caitlyn said she looked at the man’s brainwave patterns.18

“I was just looking at them, making sure everything was alright.”19

“It’s fine and you would’ve known that if you’d been here sooner.” She shot at him, any control she’d had over her annoyance was gone.20

“Hey, I was taking care of a little mess we had and it wasn’t like I knew the place was an hour away.” He told her.21

“Whatever.” She said closing her chart as she walked out of the room. He knew that whatever work had to be done on this patient was done and followed her.22

“Where are you going?” he asked, annoyance evident in his tone.23

“Paperwork, seems Charlt stuck you and I both on it today. That patient there, was the only one we’re getting today, unless things change.” She said, not looking at him as she spoke.24

“He didn’t say anything about paperwork. You sure you aren’t making this up?” he asked her. She stopped dead in her tracks when he said this.25

“Don’t you dare call me a liar, Milo Vermodi. I don’t know why he didn’t tell you, but he told me, we’re both on paperwork and that’s that. Now shut up and let’s go.” She told him, giving him a look that would’ve had him dead and buried right then and there if looks could kill. She then stormed off in the direction of small room where they would then proceed to work on paperwork. With an angry sigh he followed her.26

Author notes

Sorry, not a lot of the actual story, this is more of a character scene for Milo and Caitlyn. Let me know what you think and hopefully I'll be getting the next part of the story up and I'm sure then you'll have more story than character sketch.

  • Reads well.

I was thinking you needed more character development. This is helpful, but I would also like more physical description. Caitlyn seems to have a bit of a temper. I'm not certain whom your main character is? It seems divided between Milo and Caitlyn. This left most of my questions unanswered.

In the first sentence it should read, 'up to a small secluded area where'.
