Chapter 1: Surprise, surprise.1

“Jessie, come down, I wanna show you something!”
“Tay, gotta hang up. Dad is calling me; I’ll call you back tonight?”
“That’s fine. Oh wait! I forgot to tell you I’m having a sleepover at mine tomorrow after Alex’s party, you wanna come? It’s gonna be me, Kate, Stacy and Brittany and you, if you are coming.”
“Sounds awesome, count me in! Bye!”
Oh great, don’t have anything to wear tomorrow. Oh no, forgot to ask Tay if Zac is coming. Of course he is coming, you idiot. He’s Alex’s best friend. How is Alex going to have a party and not invite Zac? He probably is helping to organise it.
“Jessica! How many times do I need to call you? Here! Now! There you are! Get changed in something nice, I’m taking you and your brother to Crystal Spice.”
“Oh, why are we going out for?”
“There is someone I would like you and Christopher to meet.”
This doesn’t sound like dad, at all. He doesn’t take me and Chris out to Crystal Spice, the most expensive restaurant in the city, just to meet someone? This wasn’t just someone. I haven’t seen dad this excited since, well, since mum. He always tried to replace her with these stupid women that are only after his money. They never last. Longest one lasted about one month. By then, dad finally realises the woman is no good.
“Oh tell me! Who are we going to meet?” I don’t know why but I am quite excited. Crystal Spice is also my favourite restaurant. And guess what: Zac’s dad owns the whole place. There is a great chance he could be there. I can wear my new Versace dress, just in case I see him. Hopefully dad will not embarrass me. I swear if he does…then there’s no way he’ll want to marry me!
“Your see. Now change into something fancy. Hurry! We have to leave in ten minutes! And get the green stuff off your face.”
“Oh my gosh, dad! Ten minutes? How will I be ready by then? This face mask needs to stay on for 15 more minutes!” Ten minutes? Ten minutes? I can’t get ready in ten minutes? My make- up takes about an hour! Typical dad! Always at the last minute! Well, at least I already straightened my hair. That will save like, an hour. 2

"What do you kids want to order?"4

"Just the usual, dad. So who are we supposed to meet? Is it an important person from work or something? Are you taking over another hospital?"5

Dad is a doctor and owns three hospitals. He wants me and Chris to do very well at school, so we can take over his business and become doctors as well. Well, I am daddy’s favourite, I know that for sure. Chris is a drop-out. He parties all night and sleeps through the day. He smokes everything and anything and he is the biggest player I know. He convinces every girl that she is the one, sleeps with her and then dumps her. Sometimes he has five girlfriends at the same time. I can’t believe all these girls keep on falling for the same old lies, it’s like they are blinded to all his flaws. In his life he fell in love with just one girl, Taylor. My best friend. She never liked him because of the way he treats girls. He’s always wanted her, but she rejects him every time. He tells me he is over her, but I know he still likes her, or maybe, loves her. He does not have any school qualifications. He dropped out of school when he was sixteen. He had put a bad reputation on our families name at Joaquin Pascal College . It had taken a year for me to put a good reputation back on our family name. All the teachers hated Chris. I don’t know what Chris wants to do in future, he hasn’t got anything. I am going to take over daddy’s business after I finish university. I am a straight A student and I speak 5 different languages including Latin and Greek. I don’t know why Chris wants to ruin his future like this. Well, I will always hate him for what he has done to me. He always wanted me to make Tay like him, but it’s not my fault that she can actually see what a pig he is. He wanted to get back at me, even though I hadn’t done anything wrong. He slept with Zac’s sister, Anna. He then let Mark, Chris’s best friend; tell her that she was dumped because she was too fat. Since then, Anna has weight issues. She was never fat in the first place. She was actually very skinny. And guess what; Zac hates him. This means my chances had slightly decreased of him becoming my future husband, as he can not get on well with my evil brother. After what happened between Chris and Anna, Zac ignored me for three months. That was a very painful experience as I had been in love with him for over two years. I know it sounds weird, two years liking the same guy and nothing happening, but you would totally understand if you saw him. Zac is a God. 6

His gorgeous face, perfect tan and very hot body, he looks like as if he was made by angels. 7

Well, he knows he loves me. He had a crush on me since we were in diapers. But I never liked him back, so he said he stopped liking me. Since then I started liking him, a lot. I know he still loves me, but he does not want to admit it. On New Year’s Eve last year, he told Victor and Tay that he was planning to ask me out at the party, but I blew it. I really blew it. That night, I got drunk. Very drunk . So drunk I made out with Andrew Jackson in front of his face. In front of Zac. The same night he wanted to ask me out. He never asks a girl out, only if he really likes her. This was a huge thing, and I ruined it. That was the worst mistake I have ever made. But tomorrow everything is going to change. I am sure of it. I will wear my new low cut Dolce&Gabbana mini dress, and I will look gorgeous. Zac won’t be able to take his eyes of me, hopefully not only his eyes.9

"There she is! Hi honey. Come meet the kids." Dad kissed the lady that came to join our table. 10

"Kids, I have a surprise for you. I would like you to meet Nicole. She is my, fiancée." 11

"WHAT. Fiancée?", I thought aloud. How could dad propose to this woman, and the worst thing was I’ve never met her before. So she is not just his girlfriend or something, no, she is his fiancée. He is getting married to this, this, monster! She must be after his money too, just like the others! How could he do this to me and Chris? Chris probably won’t give a shit about dad and his new bitch trying to replace mum, but me, dad could have at least told me, warned me that there was going to be a new woman in his life, and I no longer would be his only girl.12

"Dad, you’re joking, right? You can’t get married again? You can’t do this to mum?" I was so confused. How could he do this to mum? "You could at least have told me you had a girlfriend, and not suddenly say you’re getting married! How could you?" I felt tears falling upon my hot cheek. I was furious. He can’t do this to me.13

"Jack, I think she is right. We should have told them when we were going out. Sweetie, I am sorry, I am not trying to replace your mother. I could not help falling in love with your father."14

"Right, falling in love with my father. Your probably fell in love with his money, just like the rest of them. You know your, like, girlfriend number seven-hundred. It won’t last, trust me. He only proposed to you because you’re young and good-looking. Your like half his age, how old are you, eighteen?"15

"That’s enough Jessica; don’t be so rude. She is not trying to replace your mother. Besides she is twenty-six." 16

"And your like forty-five. Fine, I bet you she won’t last a month." 17

"That’s enough now! One more word from you and you’re grounded!"18

I looked down on my plate. Crystal Spice did the best chicken, it was my favourite, but for the first time, I did not feel like eating, any of it.19

"Actually, we have been going out for three months now." Nicole took my father’s hand and smiled at him. What a bitch.20

"Right, whatever. I think I wanna go home, or I’ll go to Tay’s or Stacy. I’m not so hungry. You can enjoy yourselves, looks like you don’t need me." 21

"No wait, why can’t we enjoy a nice family dinner for once?" I tried to walk away, but dad grabbed my arm. I wanted to cry, and cry, but I did not want to show anyone that I felt so upset.22

"Oh, and suddenly she is family? Right, I’m going. I’m staying at Taylor’s for the night, probably for the weekend, she’s having a sleepover anyway. I’ll get my stuff on the way." I felt very upset. I tried to stay calm and show them I’m not weak. 23

"Hey, Jess. What are you doing here?" Taylor opened the door while she was still in her pyjamas. She looked very tired; she might have just come out of bed. I probably just woke her up, but I know she wouldn’t mind. She has always been there for me when I needed her. When I was ten years old, my mother died. Taylor was the one who had always been there for me; we always had been best friends, ever since we were babies. 26

"I’m sorry if I woke you up, I just couldn’t be at the restaurant or at home right now. Is it alright if I stay over for the night? I really need you right now, I didn’t know who else to go to." I was a complete mess. My mascara was running down upon my cheeks, my hair was all messed up and I looked as if I had seen a ghost.27

"Oh my gosh, Jess, come here. What’s the matter? Come in, I’ll get you a hot drink. "28

"You can’t believe what happened to me, its dad. He told me today that he’s… he’s…" It was too hard for me to say it; I still couldn’t believe that this was happening. "He’s engaged." I continued. I took a sip of my hot chocolate and kept staring down on my cold, soaked, wet feet. It had been raining all night and I ran to Taylor’s house. That’s what I usually do when I’m upset; I run and forget about all the problems.29

"Oh my gosh, really? But I didn’t even know he had a girlfriend, you didn’t tell me that." Taylor looked very surprised.30

"That’s because I didn’t know." Taylor handed out a box of tissues and I took one to whip the mascara off my face. "You know he has girlfriends all the time, and I was really surprised that he wasn’t seeing anyone for a couple months. Then now he suddenly tells me he is engaged! He had been going out with her for the last couple months, without telling me anything!" I rested my face in my hands and cried while Taylor put her arm around me and tried to comfort me.31

"Listen, it will be alright. Your dad’s girlfriends never last, maybe he is just caught in the moment with this one, and it probably won’t last that long. What you need is to have a good night sleep. You can use the guestroom, I will stay with you for a while, or I’ll use the extra bed and sleep in the same room." Taylor paused. "You know what; let’s watch a good movie. Mean Girls ! That always cheers you up! Come ’n, change into your pyjamas, it’s a school night, we don’t want to be too late!" Tay always knows how to cheer me up; she always knows how to make me laugh when I’m feeling upset. " Mean Girls sounds great, thanks Tay; you’re truly the best, ever!"32

"Jessica! Oh my gosh, Taylor called us and told us what happened. Babe, you feeling better?" Stacy came over and hugged me. Then Kate and Brittany came over and hugged me too. "Yeah, we feel really bad about it, you know, the whole thing with your dad, but we will cheer you up today; were going shopping after school!" Brittany smiled and gave me a box of Belgium chocolate. That’s what she always does, when someone’s sad, she gives chocolate. It sounds weird, but it always helps.35

"Oh you guys, that’s really nice of you but I don’t know about the shopping today…"36

"Eh, that wasn’t a question, you are so coming." Kate interrupted me. I laughed. "Sure, why not?" We all walked together to our English lesson. English and mathematics are the only two subjects we have together as a group. We all took different subjects, but we always hang out in break and lunch together. I, Taylor, Brittany, Kate and Stacy are the best friends ever, and everyone knows that. We are the most popular girls in the whole school, but were the good kind. We are never bitchy to anyone, well, most of the time. You must have done something very bad for us to not like you, for example, Tiffany. Superbitch. The sluttiest girl in school, and she thinks Zac is hers, she can think again. She always had a crush on him, but she knows that I’m the one he wants, so she always had hated me. After the New Year’s incident last year, she thought that it was her chance to get Zac, but guess what; he still didn’t want her. She always hated me, but I don’t care; I don’t like her either. And when I don’t like someone, the whole school agrees with me. Suck on that, bitch. 37

"Oh my gosh, the question miss Williams set us was just, like, way too hard, like, how can she expect us to do the whole essay thing, in just one week?"38

"Come ‘n Kate, it wasn’t hard, at all. It’s just you’re a bit slower than the rest of us." We all laughed.39

"Rudeness." Kate is the ditzy one of our group. She is seriously so dumb, it’s unbelievable. But she kind of gets away with it with her looks. She’s very pretty, blonde and dumb; poor girl, guys like to take advantage of her.40

"Well, I didn’t do the homework, did you guys?" Surprise, surprise, as if Kate ever does her homework.41

"Yeah, we all did it." Taylor answered.42

"Oh, let me copy it, please! I don’t want to get in trouble, again."43

"I would let you, Kate, but we actually have to be in lesson right now." Brittany was actually glad Kate couldn’t copy from her this time, everyone always copies from Brittany. It’s because she is the clever one in our group. Actually, she is one of the cleverest people in our whole school. Miss Williams, our English teacher, hates her. Brittany always corrects Miss Williams’s mistakes, while Brit is the student. She always sends her out for detention, while she hasn’t done anything wrong.44

"Good morning class, I would like you all to hand in your essay on Romeo&Juliet as today is your final deadline. I will not take in any excuses. If you don’t give it in today, you will have a detention on Monday. Right, when I call out your name, give in your essay. Frank"45

"Ehm, sorry Miss W, but my dog kinda eat it. I tried to make him shit it out, but, that didn’t really work."46

"Right, Frank. You think I must be very stupid to believe this, useless excuse. You have a detention with me on Monday. And in future, do not address me as Miss W; it is Miss Williams for you, young man."47

"WHAT? Why do I have a detention? I did do my homework."52

"Yes, well, your essay is far too long. I will see you on Monday."53

"If you continue arguing with me, you will be in another detention on Tuesday." What Miss Williams did was way too harsh. Brittany didn’t deserve that, at all. Her essays are, like, the best essays of the class.55

"Next one is, Kate."56

"Miss, you will, like, seriously not believe what happened to me. This morning, right, I was walking to school, and this guy, right, he like, out of nowhere jumped in front of me and wanted to rob me. So I wanted to give him, like, all my money but he said that he wanted my English essay. So I then was, like, ‘no I’m not gonna give it to you, ‘cause, like, Miss Williams will be, like, so totally disappointed in me, and I don’t want that to happen, ‘cause she’s like, totally my favourite teacher’ and I totally don’t want to disappoint you, miss. But he said that if I didn’t give it in, he would totally ruin my hair, like cut it or whatever, so I didn’t have, like, a choice; my hair is, like, my life. I am so sorry Miss, but if I didn’t get robbed, I would have, like, totally given it to you. I know you will, like, totally understand, you’re, like, the best teacher, like, ever."57

"Oh, Kate, I am so sorry about this. Don’t you worry about this, I understand you have worked very hard on this essay, do it again and give it whenever you’re done. Don’t worry about the detention."58

"Thank you, Miss. Your, like, so totally awesome." 59

"…And finish chapter ten till fifteen by Monday. I will be seeing Frank, Brittany, Roy and Jack for detention on Monday." Miss Williams sounded very happy; strange. Normally she’s angry all the time, I wonder what is going to happen this weekend. Hmm, two minutes left till the bell goes, I have to get everything ready for next lesson, science.60

Oh shit! Just remembered, I have a test today! Shit, forgot to revise, oh I will just copy of Amanda, she always let’s me, anyway. Problem solved. Did I bring my dress to Tay’s house for tonight? Oh yes, I did. I need to get some new shoes, probably those new silver Gucci ones I saw in the mall last Saturday. They were so cute! …and so expensive. Oh, don’t have any money with me, and I am so not going back home this weekend. What should I do? Well I have no choice; I can’t believe I’m going to do this: I will wear my last season’s silver Dior shoes. 61

"Jess, you got a minute? Meet me and the girls in the hall today; we have something so important to tell you!" Brittany whispered in my ear. "Why can’t you just tell me now?" 62

"Because it’s better if we tell you at break, okay? Don’t forget, straight after science we’re meeting in the hall, okay?"63

"Yeah, sure. Do you have a science exam today?" 64

"No, I already had it. I’m in the top class, so we did it before you guys. Gotta go, love ya!"65

"Oh my gosh, Jess! We’ve been waiting for like, an hour for you, were have you been?"66

"Sorry, you guys. I’ve only been ten minutes, needed to finish my exam, needed some extra time. So what did you all so desperately wanting to tell me? By the way, I can’t buy anything today, because I have, like, no money on me, sorry." 67

"That’s fine. It’s about Zac. Brit overheard him talking to Alex. He wants to ask you out, tonight!" Tay practically jumped at me.68

Oh my gosh, I cannot believe this. Finally, he is going to ask me out. You know, I thought today would be a horrible day; after what happened yesterday. But OH MY GOSH, right now it doesn’t seem to matter, because Zac, My love, wants me to be his girlfriend! Mrs. Jessica Ann Cole- Tyson. That sounds perfect. I will still use my own last name, Cole, and also have his last name. We will have three children; Jake, Amy and Madeline. We will have fun making those kids. Yeah boy. Where will we go on our honeymoon? Hmm… Ibiza? Hawaii? Somewhere tropical. Or maybe Australia?71

"Well, when I went to my locker, I heard Zac and Alex talk. Zac said that he tried to get over you many times, but he still can’t. He said that he didn’t want to get over you anymore, because he knew that he couldn’t and really wants you. Then Alex told him that it might be a good idea if he asked you at his party. He also said that Zac and you could use his bedroom or something, I didn’t hear that bit very well" Brittany winked at me cheekily.75

"Girl, like you don’t know what that means. We all know he wants a lil’ something-something." We all had to laugh. Taylor always cracks us up with her jokes.78

"DAMN IT!" We heard Kate shout out of Taylor's bathroom. She ran into us, crying.  83

"I ripped my dress! I don't have anything to wear for tonight!" Kate looked dreadful. Her mascara ran all over her cheeks.85

"Don't worry, Kate. I have loads of dresses! You can borrow something, have a look in my wardrobe." Taylor is a life saver. She always knows how to solve all our problems.86

 "Thanks, Tay. I'm gonna have a look, then."87

"So, Jess, It's your big night, tonight! When we get back here, you'll have the boyfriend of your dreams!" Brittany smiled at me cheekly. She's right. When I get back here tonight, i'll have a boyfriend. Not just a boyfriend, I'll have Zac. Oh,my phone is ringing. Great, its dad. He can't leave me alone. Well, I'll just pick up this time.88

I hung up. I can't believe this is happening. One month. ONE MONTH.100

"Jess, what happend? What did Nicole say?" Taylor and the girls all looked at me sympathetic. 101

"They are... They're... They're getting married. Within a month." I bursted out crying.102

"Oh, babe, I'm sorry. I don't know what to say." I knew Brittany wanted to say 'don't worry, everything is going to be alright.' but it's not gonna be alright. In one month i can't drive them apart, I'm going to need to have more time.103

"I don't wanna go now... I'll just stay here."104

"NO, Jess, you're going. I know because of this you don't want to go, but Zac's is gonna ask you out, it's what you always wanted. Just come with us, have fun and forget about this. If you're not having fun, we'll come back, ok?" Taylor hugged me. She's right, I shouldn't let Nicole spoil my fun. But I can't think of anything else, rather that Nicole screwing up my father's mind.105

"OK, I'll come. I'll just do my make-up." Everyone was cheering, I had to laugh.106

"Tay, you know how Jess is with alcohol when she's upset, she's really down right now. I don't think she should go, I mean, remember what happend last year at New Year's Eve when her dog died. She was really upset, don't you remember what she did in front of Zac when she was wasted?" Brittany told Taylor.107

"I know, but... I don't know. Let's just see what happens, hopefully she will resist the drink." Everyone was silent when I came back into the room.108

"I'm ready. Just finished my make-up. Let's go and get this over and done with"109
