Chapter 2: Pantherpaw
Pantherpaw sat in front of his favorite stump sharing a mouse with Rosepaw, who looked distracted 1
“Something wrong Rosepaw?” Pantherpaw asked through a mouthful of mouse.2
“Yeah remember the talk we had this morning.” She started3
Pantherpaw just stared how he could forget Rosepaw had asked if they could train together. When Pantherpaw had Redwing pinned down their mentors let them train on their own for a bit, while they went hunting. When Rosepaw had pinned him down she licked him, and then let him go. Then as they sat there Rosepaw admitted that she liked him. Still thinking about that moment Pantherpaw blinked.4
“When we returned from our training you went to go talk to your sister, but when you returned she wasn’t with you so where is she?” Rosepaw asked worriedly. 5
“Don’t worry she’s waiting for Fireflower’s patrol to get back from a special mission to Thunderclan.” Pantherpaw meowed nuzzling her black muzzle. 6
“Hey, Pantherpaw?” Rosepaw asked.7
“Yes” he meowed. 8
“Your sister when I train with her it’s like she’s a whole different cat. She’s fast like a Windclan cat; she has the strength of a Shadowclan cat, she’s as sneaky as a Thunderclan cat, and of course she can swim like a Riverclan cat. Which of course all our clan can swim, but when I fight her it’s impossible to defend or attack. I’m scared to know what kind of hunter she’ll become. My point is she’s my best friend, but is she even part of this clan she scares me sometimes. It’s as if your sister is a part of all five clans she even has a mark on her forehead that’s shaped like a star. So my question is who or what is she?” Rosepaw meowed as a kit came trotting over with a ball of moss between its teeth.9
“butterflykit what are you doing outside the nursery?” Pantherpaw asked still shocked from what he just heard.10
“Blueflower is having her kits so I’m not allowed in.” Butterflykit squeaked. 11
“where’s Birdkit?” Rosepaw asked gently.12
“in the medicine cat’s den he has a cold.” She meowed sadly.13
“why don’t you go visit the elders I’m sure they’ll have some good stories for you to hear?” Pantherpaw suggested. 14
“yeah Hawkclaw always has some good stories from when she was a medicine cat thanks I will.” Butterflykit squeaked excitedly.15
“don’t forget to take a piece of fresh kill as a sign of respect.” Rosepaw told the kit.16
“I won’t thank you both” the kit meowed grabbing a blackbird from the fresh kill pile.17
‘well that got her off our paws so about my Question?” Rosepaw asked turning to Pantherpaw as the kit walked into the elder’s den.18
“I…I don’t know I know she’s my sister because I remember the scent of our mother on her fur when we were a few days old.” Pantherpaw began. “I do remember Snowpaw acting really strange on night as if she was in pain. Icestar wasn’t in the nursery that day and Fireflower had left to go make dirt. As you know Fireflower had three kits and they were all asleep.” Pantherpaw meowed. 19
“wait Fireflower was my mother. I think I remember a bit of that Lilypaw, Rockpaw, and I woke up because we heard Snowkit squealing in pain or something like that right?” Rosepaw meowed as she watched Icestar speaking to Pebbleclaw urgently. 20
“Yes she was when you three were asleep she was meowing the strangest things I tried to comfort her, but she was only getting worse. When Fireflower came in she told me to run and get Hawkclaw, as you know she was the medicine cat before Tigerheart, but after she got very sick she retired and moved into the elder’s den. When I had entered the medicine cat’s den Tigerheart was asleep-he was Tigerpaw then- was asleep and Hawkclaw just stared at me and simply said.21
“It’s Snowkit isn’t it” as I nodded she woke up Tigerheart, grabbed some herbs and ran off to the nursery. I went back to the nursery and you three were outside playing around. When I entered the den Fireflower told me to go get Icestar. I had just seen my mother go into her den so I knew where she was. I went over and sat right outside her den and waited. “Pantherkit is that you come in, come in” she meowed as I entered my fear scent must have been strong because she asked me “is something wrong?” “I. It’s Snowkit” I squeaked. “I I think she’s dying” Pantherpaw finished. 22
“Wait that’s it?” Rosepaw asked.23
“I’m afraid that’s all I can tell you I’ve been forbidden by Icestar to tell anyone the rest of the story” Pantherpaw sighed24
“I understand… something happened that was shocking right?” Roepaw asked25
“Yes now stop asking questions” Pantherpaw told her26
“Sorry just one more who knows the rest of the story?” Rosepaw asked27
“Even if I did tell you those cats wouldn’t tell you we’ve been forbidden by Icestar.” He told her 28
“Oh I know I just want to know who else knows the rest of the story you can trust me I promise.” She told him licking his muzzle.29
“Fine well I, Icestar, Tigerheart, Hawkclaw, and Fireflower.” pantherpaw meowed 30
“Does Snowpaw know?” Rosepaw asked31
“No of course not how do you explain that to any cat.” Pantherpaw told her shocked32
“True, but…Fireflower” Rosepaw yowled as four cats dragged themselves into camp. Pantherpaw took one look at the injured cats and ran to the medicine Cat’s den. 33
“Tigerheart, Lilypaw…dawn patrol…injured…come quickly” Pantherpaw breathed tired from running so fast.34
“Oh Starclan help them Lilypaw grab some supplies I’ll go check on there injuries” Tigerheart ordered.35
“Yes Tigerheart” Lilypaw replied grabbing as many herbs as she could carry. Letting them do their job Pantherpaw left the den. As he left he saw Icestar talking to Ripplewing urgently. Looking around he couldn’t help but wonder “where’s Snowpaw?” 36
“All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather around the highledge for a clan meeting.” Icestar’s voice rang around the clearing37
When all the cats had gathered Icestar continued “Fireflower explain what happened” 38
“yes Icestar” Fireflower meowed bowing her head.” We successfully delivered the message to Thunderclan without a threat Leafstar has agreed to meet you at the edge of our territories.” 39
“Very well is that it?” Icestar asked 40
“Unfortunately no you see as we were heading back Rockpaw accidentally crossed the Windclan border after one of our squirrels and he was caught by a Windclan patrol led by Willowstar himself. He meowed something about us trespassing in their territory. Then he ordered his patrol to attack. We were outmatched and outnumbered after it seemed Starclan was calling us Ripplewing found the strength to pin Willowstar down. He and his patrol had given up, but Willowstar meowed fine you win, but this has gone over a border fight be prepared we will get stronger and attack at dawn in three days. I don’t understand why they would attack us because one of our apprentices crossed their border.” Fireflower told the clan finishing her report41
“May I ask something” Pantherpaw asked Icestar 42
“Of course what is it?” Icestar meowed43
His whole body tensed as all eyes turned to him twitching his tail nervously he asked “w…where’s Snowpaw she was waiting for you at the entrance of camp so there is no way you could have missed her did something happen to her?”44
“Yes Fireflower where is my daughter?” Icestar asked glaring looking very nervous Fireflower looked at Ripplewing nodding Ripplewing stood up 45
“Snowpaw has decided on her own to go to try to stop Windclan...”46
