Sad Looking Girl

She was a sad looking girl, her hair always in her face and her eyes always looking down. She also had a funny way of never paying attention, but always having her face partly turned to the authority figure in the room. Even when that person wasn't talking or even part of what she was doing. She reminded me of an expectant dog, watching her master's every move, waiting for them to call to her. Her eyes pierced through my flesh and in to my very soul every time she looked at me. I didn't know what it was about those eyes. They were so empty and void of any hope. 1

She wasn't very attractive. Not even a little bit. The boys never payed any attention to her, and I think it drove her crazy. Maybe that's why she never spoke. Because everyone knew the way she was. She liked boys. I mean, she really liked boys. There were constant rumors flying around about the guy that she had slept with the night before. He was always some drunk, way too old for her, that she had never met before and probably would never see again. Everyone wondered if she thought that's what she deserved, but no one ever dared to ask her. 3

Until one day, Jason, one of the populars and a total ass, approached her. She was sitting alone, as usual, at a lunch table, scribbling in her black notebook. He walked over to her calm and cocky as ever and said, "So, I hear you're a whore."5

6

She looked up at him with those cold eyes that seemed to look right through him. He stared back at her, matching her coldness, and continued, "Why won't you talk? What, are you too good for the rest of us? Is that it? Talk to me!"7

8

She continued to stare at him, like she was dreaming and all of this wasn't real. It didn't even seem to phase her.9

10

"Well, I've got news for you, just because you've had sex more times than any of us can count, doesn't mean you're better than all of us." 11

12

He smirked at her as if to tell her that there was nothing she could do about what he said. She let out a sigh and got up off her seat. She stood in front of him and looked him dead in the eyes. He took half a step towards her and whispered, "You're trash, you know? Complete trash."13

14

With that, she rushed at him and hit him square in the face. He fell on to his back and looked up at her with astonishment. Then, he wiped away the blood that was pouring from his nose and got up and walked away.15

16

I never saw that sad looking girl after that. Some people said that she was suspended for hitting Jason, while others said that she got pregnant and dropped out. I never found out the truth. Sometimes I miss that girl. I look over at her empty chair and see her still sitting there. She always had a sweet smile to give when someone said something nice to her. She was beautiful when she smiled. Her eyes became filled with life and joy. She had a quiet, sweet voice that I'd only heard once. I had said to her, "So, how's that book? I heard it was a good read."17

18

She'd smiled that beautiful smile at me and said, "Yeah, it's actually the best book I've ever read."19

20

I replied, "Really? I'll have to get it."21

22

"Well, I just finished this copy. Would you like it?"23

24

She handed me the book and flashed another smile at me. 25

26

I still have that book, and she was right, it's really great. Sometimes I really miss that girl. I think, I loved her. 27

    Awww. That was so sweet.

I was hoping she would come back in the end but I like how you ended it. It gave me goose bumps. "I think, I loved her."
