He hadn’t thought of the word, alabaster,
since they had been ashore
a blast of wind
the longship sliding into waves that curl
flecked cusps of froth like marble crème
that spattered on the crew
this Viking mouse yelled out for more
too long the winter months held darkened skies
but now the frigid fjord slipped behind
and diamond towers rose within the sun.
Morgan Creavy readied for his step on land,
a blood taste in his mouth
the world in his pocket. 2

Helogoland will not forget
How Creavy’s heart was won amidst the din
Of Norseman fury
‘We’ll put this mouse upon a throne,’
he vowed.
‘My tonsured head will stay forever bowed,’
he pledged.
It was the first of Creavy’s many loves as told
in the golden tapestry at Skog
how he sheathed his long sword and decried his plan
If she was not a queen he would make her one
fair as gentle breeze and slighter than a sparrow’s wing
Astrid’s blue eyes fixed upon this noble rodent soul
heather carpets curtsied obeisance.4

A tiara of sea shells was in her hair
a daisy chain around her waist
a tight brocade of eider down
a cape of eidelweis
her whale bone throne, yellowed by the candlelight,
set off the inlayed runic script
Odin’s pleasure clearly shown
fair Astrid had become their queen
amidst the toasts of mead and wine
quaffed to the final draught
as one, they called to Morgan Creavy
to become the king
alas, Thor’s jealous interests came to play,
expressed in thunder claps and frightening rage
this mouse belonged upon the sea
and not with happy endings.
Author notes
The discovery of a mouse skeleton buried in the remains of a miniature Viking longship has prompted worldwide speculation. The mouse was dressed in the regalia of a Viking warrior, complete with a tiny button painted as a shield, an exquisite miniature long sword and tiny fur boots. Testing from the university in Oslo verified the antiquity of the tomb as being consistent with the reign of King Haagred in 1085 AD. Morgan Creavy did not sound at all like a Viking name, but a child in Rapid City, South Dakota suggested it to the selection committee.

Nice. Do you think you'll expand this or just leave it the way it is? I'd definately read more if you wanted to expand it! Keep up the good work
