The Daemon of Seorn- Prologue

The lone security guard on duty at this hour had gone to sleep hours ago. Everything was nice and quiet. Then, there was a small thud that came from the giant glass skylight. There was a man in thievery attire that had just appeared. He took out a small knife and began to cut the glass. He made a hole that was roughly his size. He finished, and the glass circle fell to the ground, shattering, yet not waking the snoring guard. The man had tied a rope to a nearby pole on the roof, and threw it in the hole. He began to lower himself into the museum. The thief eventually fell to the ground with a soft thud. He looked around to check if he was in the right place, and then began to walk briskly to the Ancient Artifacts section. He soon was surrounded by old treasures, glittering in the pale moonlight coming from another glass skylight. 1

The thief’s eyes lit up at all the loot in the room. But one certain object caught his eye. It was a strange-looking thing, to say the least. It was a giant gold medallion that could only have fit around a giant’s neck. This wasn’t the peculiar thing about the medallion, it was the carvings on it. The artifact was covered with cryptic writings and pictures of skulls and death. In the middle was a huge fiery red pentagram that glowed in the night. The chain of the medallion was composed of beads shaped as skulls. Yes, whoever made this amulet either wanted people to stay away from it, or they had a really sick obsession with death. All the thief saw was that it was gold, and really, really shiny. His eyes were suddenly filled with greed as he proceeded to cut the glass case that enclosed the medallion. He should have read the plaque under the exhibit that clearly said:2

Warning!!!3

Do not touch if you value your life! The Amulet of Seorn is rumored to contain an extremely heavy curse and a horrible demon beyond human comprehension. Do not touch or you will doom us all!!!4

But he ignored the plaque and continued on with his criminal interests. The glass finally fell as the alarms sounded. Surprised and scared, the thief quickly grabbed the medallion and hung it around his grimy little neck. The medallion’s pentagram changed from a glowing red to a dull brown as red smoke began pouring out of it. The man did not notice as he searched for an escape route. He did notice when the ground had started to shudder and the smoke began to change. He stopped in his tracks as a huge fiery creature rose before him. The creature was huge red and evil. It had three orange eyes full of hate, four giant arms bulging with muscle, wings of a dragon, two pairs of horns that were splattered with blood, and a giant spiked tail that ended with a giant curved blade that was stained red from an apparent cause. The thing roared menacingly from its gigantic mouth filled with teeth that were more like swords, and were probably twelve times as deadly. The petty thief, having wet himself in horror, tried to run, but found himself paralyzed with fear. The thing grabbed him with one of its huge arms and held him at face-level. The last sight the thief had had been of 5,000 teeth, a forked tongue the size of a rolled-up highway, and a fiery death that came rushing to greet him. 5

The next day the police found a scorched museum and a hole that could have been made by a falling building. There was no trace of the Amulet of Seorn or the security guard. A lot of artifacts that were rumored to contain demons and evil spirits had been taken, too. The only clues they had was a hole in a skylight, a broken display case, and the ashes of a thief who stole the wrong artifact.6
