(The scene is dark a dreary, in a dead deep forest, a voice comes and speaks out) 2
Voice: Our poor poor Luna; how she weeps! (Sobbing can be heard as a spotlight is put on middle stage on a young woman on her knees, laying her head on a dead old stump, her arms hiding her face.) Can no one hear her pleas? Her story shall not remain untold! It was just weeks ago….. 3
(The voice fades out and the curtain is pulled closed, when it opens we are in Luna’s bedroom. Luna is pacing nervously, wearing a long royal blue dress, her striking red hair put up lavishly.) 4
Luna: Mother, oh Mother? Yalanna, please go find mother for me. It is quite important. 5
Yalanna: Yes Miss Luna. (She curtseys) Mistress Stella! (She heads out the door on the right.) 6
Luna: (sighs heavily) Oh what shall I do? Father wants me to marry, but who am I supposed to find in such a short time! (Sits on her bed) I know I am getting older, but I should still have a choice to get married or not. 7
Mistress Stella: Luna dear? You called for me? 8
Luna: (Wads her skirts into her lap) Yes mother, I don’t want to get married, I don’t want to do this. (Her voice is distressed, tears are threatening.) 9
Mistress Stella: Oh Luna, not this again, you know I have no say so in the matter; a woman is to be seen and not heard. You are getting old and your father feels you need a husband, being his only child your son will be your father’s heir. 10
Luna: And why should I care about that? I know I’m a woman of eighteen, but father shouldn’t force me to marry. It’s not fair mother, you know it’s not! 11
(Mistress Stella shakes her head, feeling sorry for her only daughter) 12
Mistress Stella: You must face your own problems and find your own solutions, I can not solve this for you my love. 13
(She exits down the stairway on the upper left.) 14
Luna: Fine! (This should be yelled.) I will do this myself, I will find my own path, and if I die doing it, well that’ll teach them! 15
(The curtain closes. When it opens Luna is sneaking out of her room, leaving her father to find himself an heir some other way.) 16
Luna: I will get away from here; you will not force me to do something I do not want to do. (She whispers, but then her hands slip from the railing she is climbing down and she falls, landing on top of a mysterious man, she recognizes him as Adrian, a man not fondly looked upon in the village, said to be a bit of a scoundrel.) 17
Adrian: What in the world is your problem girl? (Gets up, pushing her off of him) You could’ve killed us both. 18
Luna: It’s not your place to reprimand me! 19
Adrian: (chuckles) Yeah, well, I’m not so used to girls falling over me, at least in the literal sense of the phrase. 20
Luna: Hold your tongue sir, I’m not just anybody! Do you know who my father is? 21
Adrian: No and I don’t really care to be honest. You really should get off the ground; you’ll catch your death. (Holds out his hand to help her up) 22
Luna: (slaps his hand away and uses the wall to pull herself up) I don’t need your help sir.23
Adrian: Please, just call me Adrian, no need to introduce yourself Miss Luna, I know who you are. So what exactly were you doing crawling out at this time of night anyway? 24
Luna: (looks at the ground embarrassedly) If it were any of your business I’d tell you, but it is of no concern to you. 25
Adrian: I was just leaving town, there is a road close to here that leads to Meridal, if you were starting to wonder why I was here. (Looks up at the railing) It’s a good thing I decided to be here, I see. 26
Luna: You are going out of town? Please let me come with you. (Her voice is pleading) I want to leave this place, please take me with you sir! 27
Adrian: I don’t know, wouldn’t your father have my head if he knew? (Teasing)28
Luna: But if I remember correctly you said you didn’t care who my father was.29
Adrian: So I did, you’re very sharp aren’t you? I suppose you can come along, just don’t be so prissy. 30
Luna: (nods) Thank you sir, I mean Adrian. 31
Adrian: Let’s get going, it’s a long walk yet. (Walks to a path on upper left stage) Come on. 32
(The lights go out and the curtain closes. When the curtain reopens Luna is in a busy market place) 33
Luna: Adrian where are you? I can’t find you. (Bumps into an old woman) Have you seen a man about this height (motions about her head) brown hair, with blue eyes? 34
Woman: No. 35
Luna: Oh Adrian where are you? 36
(A dark looking character walks up behind Luna)37
??? : Well, well, well Lady Luna. So you have slipped away from your father’s grasp. You always swore you would, even as a child. 38
Luna: Who are you? (He grabs her wrist) What do you want with me? 39
???: You don’t remember me? Oh, that hurts my lovely Luna. After all you are my fiancée. 40
Luna: You have some nerve if you think I would… (Looks at him closely) Oh my god in heaven! Benny it’s you isn’t it? 41
Ben: The name is Benjamin, not Benny, and if I am not mistaken, then yes, you said you would marry me, remember? I was upset that all those kids were picking on me because I had no father, and you came and sat beside me, do you remember what you said to me? 42
Luna: Yes, I said,” Benny, father or not you are a very noble soul, and when I get older, I promise I will marry you.” 43
Ben: Then you kissed me on the cheek, well I heard your father was making you wed, and I came to the castle to claim you and you had disappeared. Do you know how that made me feel? (Tightens his grip on her wrist) I was quite angry that you had decided to skip out on me. 44
Luna: But Benny, I didn’t even remember it. We were just kids you can’t hold me to that. Please just let me go. I’m very sorry I gave you that idea, you were my best friend Benny, I never wanted to marry you. I just couldn’t stand to see you cry. 45
Benny: Why you little-! (his words are cut short when Adrian’s fist collides with his face.) 46
Adrian: (grabs Luna’s hand as Benny falls to the ground) Come on Luna, your father’s guards are all over the place! We have to hurry!47
Luna: Where should we go? How are we going to escape with my father’s people crawling the place?48
Adrian: Just follow me! (Pulls her away toward a huge tower)49
(The curtains are closed. When they open Luna and Adrian are in the tower, in a small hidden room, there is a table near the door with keys on it, and three chairs scattered around the room)50
Luna: (her breathing is heavy) Adrian how are we going to get out of here?51
Adrian: shhh. They are outside. (He puts his finger to his lips) It’ll be okay.52
Luna: But…53
Adrian: shhhh.54
(Heavy footsteps can be heard from outside, Luna whimpers. The voices of the guards can be heard.)55
Guard one: Master Lucious will be furious if we don’t find Lady Luna soon.56
Guard two: Well then get looking you bone head. We haven’t time to waste.57
Guard one: (He mumbles inaudibly.)58
Guard two: What was that?!59
Guard one: Nothing, nothing.60
(They hear footsteps as the guard leave.)61
Luna: Adrian, I’m quite fearful of what might happen to you if my father catches us. Perhaps I should just turn myself in.62
Adrian: Luna, do you want to go home?63
Luna: Absolutely not!64
Adrian: Then I, Adrian Vidar, shall protect you and get you where you want to go. I promise.65
Luna: (Looks at him, tears threatening.) I don’t want to have anyone hurt over this. Not anyone, and especially not you, I always thought you were quite the rascal, but then I met you. It has taught me not judge people based on words of other people’s mouths. I don’t want you hurt because, Adrian, I find you to be quite fascinating.66
Adrian: Don’t cry silly. I won’t let anything happen I swear.67
(Luna breaks into tears and embraces him.)68
Luna: Things are just so unfair!69
Adrian: It’ll be okay… shhhh… (Rubs her on the back)70
(Guards bust into the room, armed, they had heard her crying. They grab Adrian, the lights fade.)71
Luna: NO!72
(Curtains close. When the rise Luna is again in her bedroom, in a wedding dress)73
Mistress Stella: Don’t look so angry dear. Lord Benjamin is an honorable man. He will make a great husband.74
Luna: But I do not love him! I love Adrian! (She covers her mouth in surprise.)75
Mistress Stella: Do not let your father hear you say that dear! (Looks around wearily)76
Luna: How can he do this! I do not even like Benny!77
Mistress Stella: Benjamin, sweetie.78
Luna: He is crude and unruly! I will not marry him! I can not… My heart is not his to have, and yet you dare tell me to marry him, to share his bed, to have his children? Well the answer is no! You hear me? NO!79
(Her mother looks taken back, but straightens herself up)80
Mistress Stella: You haven’t a choice in the matter. Get ready and be there on time!81
Yalanna: Mistress, the rogue has been executed for kidnapping poor Luna. (Looks Luna’s way) You are no longer in danger my lady.82
Luna: (Looks coldly at Yalanna) Go away! Go away, all of you!!83
(Yalanna and Mistress Stella exit through the door on the right)84
Luna: I have to get out of here! (Goes behind and changing curtain and changes into a pair of pants and a blouse) I will not let them rule my life. (Exists down to the balcony and climbs down the unsteady railing)85
(The curtains close. When they rise Luna is in the middle of a dark forest, a single ray of light pointed to middle stage where she lay, her face buried in her arms laid on a stump. The voice comes back)86
Voice: Oh, how my lady weeps! Look at her sorrow! (Sobbing can be heard) Will she find her happiness? Will she break free?87
