A Murder Story (Pt. 2)

A slow, rhythmic beeping sounded softly from the darkness. The beeping was followed by whispers getting increasingly louder. The darkness slowly gave way to a small speck of light getting bigger and bigger. The speck of light was filled with images of numerous mechanisms and doctors and nurses bustling around a small white room.1

The room went black for another second and then a blinding light swept into the room. The sun. A hospital.2

"You're awake at last!" a tiny nurse exclaimed. She was leaning over the edge of Quentin's medical bed peering at him through small glasses. Strands of her long brown hair were hanging loosely in her face.3

"Where's my mommy and daddy?" Quentin asked in a small squeaky voice.4

The nurse sighed and her face formed a sad smile. "Not right now honey, you need your rest. You can see mommy and daddy later." She gave Quentin a small smile and stroked his forehead.5

Quentin shrugged the nurse's hand away and said, "I wanna see mommy. Where's daddy?" His voice took on an odd tone. It sounded as if he was trying to make her do something without asking.6

The nurse whose name was Alicia simply stared at the boy. "Quentin, you cannot see your parents right now, they're," she paused,"they're sleeping."7

Quentin's head snapped up. He straightened up from his slouched position on bed and looked around curiously. A voice crooned, "Quentin settle down. You can see me after you rest."8

He gave the nurse a small smile and said, "Mommy's not sleeping. She just talked to me." The nurse frowned slightly and looked behind her. She seemed not to see anything and turned back toward her patient.9

"I don't see your mother her Quentin. What did she say?" The nurse supposed that it couldn't hurt to let the child believe his mother was still alive. He would have to find out from a better person than herself.10

"She told me I could see her after I slept." He gave the nurse a cute smile and turned over on his side.11

An hour passed before Quentin woke up again.He looked better than before, his eyes no longer had dark shadows and lost their red color. "Can I see mommy now?" he questioned in a small voice.
