Day 6 of Juno,1
I made it to Endo, the capital city, today. I left Mallay, my mare, at the stable outside of the gates. Telling Summer to stay with her I hoped to lessen the shock that usually came to people meeting me for the first time. Summer whined at me, wanting to see the new city but a puma cub trotting around often drew attention and, while I needed to be noticed, being noticed as the girl with the lion was not what I needed.
I tossed Starlight into the air, asking her to be my eyes. Starlight, while looking like a falcon is not a falcon. Neither is Summer a puma. I'm not sure whether they are godlings or familiars or just god-touched but they do not behave the way they should for simple animals.
Tucking Squirm and Wiggle, my ferrets, back into my pack from which they had escaped again, I faced the city gates with increasing trepidation. I grew up in the sand tribes, we were numerous but very spread out. I had never been in a city. Let alone one with so many people in so little space.
Inside I decided I might be clausterphobic and that my quest was a ill-concieved one. Starlight reminded me that my quest was not my idea and not to second guess whichever god gave it to me. It can be annoying having such an intelligent bird, there were people everywhere! I could hardly move. I tucked myself into a doorway and borrowed Starlight's eyes, hoping there was a reason for such comotion and that this was not everyday life in the city. To my relief I was right. A parade made it's way down the main street. Switching my eyes from Starlight to Squirm I placed the ferret on the ground and allowed him to make his way to the parade. Wiggle perched himself on my shoulder ready to nip my earlobe if anyone approached me.
The parade was led by the royal family. The King looked equisit all in purple. His black stallion trotted and snorted, showing off for the crowd. The queen offset his magisty in light yellow, riding a peacful looking white gelding. Between them rode the 2 princesses on ponies. The older in lavender as she was the heir to the throne, the younger in a vibrant yellow making the child almost glow.
I stood still in my door-frame watching as Knights in armor followed the family. The ladies of court in their amazing dresses were about to come into my sight when movement caught Squirm's attention. As his head twisted to the right I saw the glint of light on metal. A man lept from a balcony above Squirm, knife in hand, obviously intent on the older princess. Without thinking I surged my magic forward catching the man mid-leap. Screams filled my ears as I watched the knights surround the king.
After a full minute the people seemed to realize the man wasn't going to descend any further, he was stuck mid-air. The King parted the knights, appearently having dismounted. He approached the would be killer and inspected him, careful not to touch him. A bird skreetched and Squirm seemed to take that as a hint to grab the king's robe hem.
The king, startled by this, bellowed "where did this ferret come from?" Squirm pulled the king in my direction and, thankfully the king followed. When they finally reached my doorway the king must have noticed I was glowing. Which ever part of me that I have reached out with magically glows green, no one notices when it's just my eyes or my ears, but when I've placed almost my entire body into my magic, it can become quiet bright. I pulled my eyes back from Squirm in time to see the king's mouth move. I couldn't hear him. Thinking quick I realized my ears were currently with the attacker, I pulled them back knowing that would not be enough to allow him to move from his floating position.
Wiggle nipped my earlobe and I mentally scolded him as the king repeated himself. "Give me one good reason why I don't have you arrested where you stand."
Pulling my mouth back and ignoring the screaming issuing from the attacker now that he had control of his own mouth again I said, "because if you move me you move the man who was about to attack you, possibly freeing him from my magic. If you would be so kind as to arrest him, sire, I can be freed of my grip on him and would be happy to explain the situation at hand." Well there goes getting noticed without startling anyone. The king looked hesitant, then hollered back to his knight to shackle to airborn man. I sighed with relief and pulled all my magic back into myself. The crowd began to laugh and Starlight told me it was from watching the once frozen man fall to the ground at the knights feet.
"We expect a full explination, young..." The king paused for my name.
"Diox. Diox Cubcare." I supplied.
"Young Cubcare. You will meet us at the palace as soon as the parade is finished. Take this." He handed me a silver disk from out of his tunic. It was obvious he had decided to trust me. The disk was a royal signet and could have been fenced for a small fortune. "It will gain you access to our private quarters." With that he returned to the parade.
