Every morning, she thought of pumpkins. It was an idiosyncratic contemplation, but her kitchen was orange - like those damnable pumpkins she carved with her children every year on Halloween. Those adorable little gremlins that emerged from her womb, trapping her forever in their sphere of dependency. She could not help but loathe them for their love...for the way they looked at her, as though commanding her to protect them. Who was she to take guard over anyone? She could barely make them breakfast correctly, and yet she was expected to look after human life? The annoyingly beautiful irony of life. She hated herself because she could not be Super mom. Soccer mom. Sell-out mom. She could not simultaneously bake brownies for the PTA meeting, discuss client relations with her boss, put a band-aid on her son's knee, run her daughter to ballet lessons in the minivan, and satisfy her husband sexually. Every morning, she thought of pumpkins. And this morning, as the toast popped happily out of its fiery cooker and her husband brushed his teeth, the orange kitchen was stained with red as her all-too human blood oozed along the tiles and the carving knife fell daintly to the floor. The house was filled with the smell of burning eggs - another breakfast gone wrong.1

Completely beautiful in every way imaginable. You make it seem so mundane in the beginning and end with such a great twist that was so unexpected. It reminds me of many peoples lives and how they wake up every morning and do the same thing and one day they realize all they have ever done has been nothing... I love it... really!
